VERY excited to be joined by Dr. Jay Bundy (‪@pocketlocker86‬ ) to talk about his recent (and extremely entertaining) debate with Dr. Michael Behe, and having conversations with creationists in general.
Dr. Bundy's debate with Dr. Behe, which took place on Michael Beverly's channel (‪@michaelsbeverly‬ ): www.youtube.co...

You are right, "debate" is a STRONG word... but it WAS beautifully cathartic to watch Behe get put on the spot (and run away). And I agree, they are definitely criminal.

@45:00 years ago I tried to pin Behe down on whale evolution, what a transitional would need to look like to satisfy him, and he scampered off faster than Josh Hawley sprinting on Jan 6

Believable, he is as slippery as a hagfish and as much of a contortionist as a cat... both of which are at least naturally more interesting than Behe's overly simplified, silly and condescending teachings.

Well done Jay. I agree with Jay. These discussions will always be with us and it's magnificent to see academics take on creationists/IDers/flat-earthers. And academics cannot afford to take these anti-science folk lightly. It takes a skill to argue/debate/discuss things with them. If you wish to see another great debate between an academic archaeologist and a very popular pseudo historian, see the debate on Joe Roan's channel between Flint Dibble (archaeology academic) and Graham Hancock (ancient ciivilizations pusher). Dibble was brilliant in how he handled Hancock. There are lots of videos out there reviewing the debate and in which Dibble explained how he won. For example:- "Interview with Flint Dibble on Pseudo Archaeology, the Hancock Debate and Science Communication" "An Archaeologist Debated Graham Hancock. I Have Thoughts" One of the things Dibble said was that in his debate with Hancock, he had the proviso that he go first. Why? Because it let him set the context of the debate. And Dan. Yes good on you for continuing to chat with these people. Keep it up.

19:08 "Let's define IC..." Yeah, this was my original approach to Behe. I just wanted him to discuss IC with Jay. The SCIENCE...period. He refused to agree to this and insisted that he be allowed to discuss his slides and "Darwinism." lol I didn't want to cancel the show, so we proceeded, but just be aware, I did not invite him on my show to talk to Jay for an hour about "general evolution" and "Darwinism" as he ended up doing. His entire false presentation was as if he was talking to 7th graders who'd never had a science class before and were being raised by fundies who needed a Christian to explain things without insulting God.

Hard agree on one of the early points: it's part of the modern YEC mythology that they're living rent free in the head of professional biologists. While in reality, telling other biology colleagues that your hobby is arguing with creationists gets a similar reaction as if you've just told them you like mud wrestling. A combination of "That's a thing?" and "Why?". It's something that you "admit" to once or twice. Not the daily topic during lunch.
@austinsims4560
@austinsims4560 4 дня назад
I'm not even a professional biologist, or a scientist in anything but only the most liberal sense of the word, and even I have done two live web debates with a creationist and I completely destroyed him in both. I do it because I have a specific background with creationism that made it salient to me how dangerous it is and how cruel it is to the people who believe in it. I debate creationists not because their nonsense lives rent free in my head but because it distresses me that they might do to their children what was done to me. And even I have had colleagues who are also decidedly not biologists have similar reactions. "Why?" is definitely something I get a lot. Most rational people think creationists are a lost cause.

On the subject of creationists faking being nice as a defensive strategy, I am reminded of a quote: "You must be seen as their friend. After all,...it is necessary to get behind someone before you can stab them in the back." Anyone that lies for a living about scientific fact is going to lie about their social interactions as well. And honestly, I'd respect them more if they were just openly assholes, instead of putting up a facade. At least when they say the quiet part out loud I know that they mean it.
@adamredwine774
@adamredwine774 4 дня назад
Yeah. It’s very much a part of the culture. Their audience really appreciates it.
@austinsims4560
@austinsims4560 4 дня назад
Yeah it's a strategy that I have used in my debates with creationists. Even though with a gun to my head I would admit that I absolutely loathe them, nobody wants to admit they are wrong to somebody they don't like and don't relate to. I hope by being the "friendly" "evolutionist" "one of the good ones" or whatever that they will be more likely to actually entertain my arguments. It has worked a handful of times. I consider that a win. But yeah when creationists do it it is definitely more slimy and sinister. It's a tactic to get into position, and start lying without being held accountable and if you are you impugn the person pointing out your lying for "not being polite." I think of creationists as being in denial and gentleness and kindness are more effective tools for convincing someone to abandon denial then being forceful. Sometimes they are even more effective than actual logic and facts. They need to feel safe to change their mind, which can be difficult to achieve with someone who's afraid changing their mind will make them candidates for being subjected to eternal torture.

I thoroughly enjoyed this discussion and afterwards I went and watched the debate you were breaking down. Holy crap. Dr. Bundy absolutely bodied Behe. It was like watching Mike Tyson go ten rounds with a schoolgirl in pigtails. I almost felt bad for Behe! It was like watching you work over somebody's grampa with dimentia. You annihilated him, he practically had cartoon flop sweats while you were putting the screws to him. I hope he has the bad sense to get in the ring with you again. It was a pleasure watching you maul him.

It was an interesting approach. I don't know how effective it would be but I respect the honesty. Maybe those already entrenched in the idea that all mainstream science is corrupt would be totally put off by this approach. But those who still have some respect for mainstream science might be shocked to hear this isn't some polite academic disagreement or some misunderstood maverick genius being prevented, by a zealous few, from being heard by the wider and more reasonable scientific community. I notice that when speaking to actual experts they like to shy away from accusations of grand conspiracy and play into the whole, "hey now, let's discuss my bad faith arguments with infinite patience and benefit of the doubt." Maybe in some circumstances, trying to play along and pretend like they aren't just lying to your face is worth it for the sake of getting your points across but the shock value of just calling them out might have some impact too. Whatever the outcome, it certainly wasn't boring.

If you recognize that you're dealing with dishonest people who are trying to brainwash others for money and power, the aggressive approach makes more sense. Scammers thrive on debate and etiquette. They will gish gallop and take advantage of every courtesy you give them in order to keep their victims from escaping. And as you've implied, a brainwashed victim is already ignoring all voices outside of the scammer. So if facts won't work, your best option is exposing the scammer as a fraud. This can make you look unprofessional, but you're not dealing with honest people. If you can expose the scammer as a fraud, the victims have a chance. Maybe they just move to the next scammer, but at least you have put a dent in the reputation of one scammer. On the other hand, one channel had a unique idea. Instead of addressing the scammers, just publish information that supports the science. Make it so correct information is impossible to avoid. You can't force people to read the actual science, but maybe you can make it harder to avoid.

Imagine a fraudster on trial, and the defense said "stop calling my client a dishonest liar, that's just a personal attack" When discussing if and why an organization and its members are fraudulent, pointing out lies or dishonest behaviour is relevant. You can, in parallel, also discuss the factual content. But there's nothing intriniscally wrong with pointing out the conceptual and evidential flaws with irreducible complexity and also noticing that the person who popularized the idea is not a nice person.
