I'm happy Debian keeps pumping out solid full distros with tons of excellent software packages. There was a time a few years ago I feared we'd all have to use Docker or strange new packaging systems just to install anything on Linux desktops!

@@michaeljijus980 Sorry for necroposting, probably got your answer already but yeah it's good for gaming, worst case though you might not be able to play some online games due to horrible Anti-Cheat and/or just flatout being banned on Linux as a whole. Modding games isn't all too much different either, especially if your game makes use of a Mod Manager. Also I am not sure about the performance difference on newer hardware myself, I am on a old computer but a potential heads up I heard nvidia doesn't really pair well because of driver issues. I could be very wrong, sorry I have really only ever used Intel Graphics and AMD my whole life.

Very helpful. It’s great to see software that will support older machines with continued functionality, rather than adding to e waste

@@tonysheerness2427 Microsoft seems to be working with the hardware manufacturers to almost force us into buying new systems so we can run their latest versions, promoting even more E-waste. On the other hand, that means there are lots of available used systems going real cheap that will be perfectly good Linux machines for years to come.
@theglowcloud2215
@theglowcloud2215 Год назад
@@thedarkmoon2341 Windows 11, meanwhile, is functionally a reskin of Windows 10. There isn't enough fundamentally better about it to justify 11's existence. Microsoft is the same old brand of evil they've always been, just with a new coat of paint.
@Winnetou17
@Winnetou17 Год назад
While I support the idea, I don't think it relates to e-waste anymore. 32bit systems are, by now, so old that they're basically unusable as a normal computer. If you value your time, that is. So I think that 32 bit systems are mostly just for niche segments now, enthusiasts and geeks having them for retro purposes. And, frankly, they could all simply still use Debian 11, that's why I say the e-waste is a non argument in this case, these systems are not being thrown away anyway, Debian 12 support or not. And the machines that would be e-waste without proper software support are 64 bit by now. Still, like I said, I really like the 32 bit support and backwards support in general. Maybe you want to simply have a partition with 32bit OS+apps that you can run "natively" so to speak, while your main OS can stay 64 bit.

The first time I installed Debian, I installed it with four floppy disks and an internet install. I initially couldn't get the GUI working so I did everything running off the green screen (Lynx is cool) and set up a file and print sharing on a network using token ring and Ethernet. Even recompiled the kernel to use OS/2 drives after the OS/2 Landserver's motherboard failed, someone told me that it was a real bad thing to do but it really booted fast. I booted Knoppix to get a configuration for the GUI. I love Debian. I got a bad habit of using Ubuntu because it was easy sort of like driving a car with an automatic transmission. I think it is time to get back to the stick shift.

Another great video Chris. Simple and to the point. The only thing I've noticed is these "major" releases are what we used to call minors... there's nothing really *major* to report any more and the kernel (the only bit of Linux in there) is similarly getting major numbers for what amount to continuations. I would say a major change (for example) was when Gnome split between Gnome 2 and Gnome 3 where 2 became Mate and Gnome kept the awkward pronunciation trying too hard to be a pun on Gnu.

Thank you for this video. However, it was very heavy on discussing graphical user interfaces. I would like to see a discussion about package management and how to keep a distro solid but still be able to install various software. I'm a long time Debian user and I am always hesitant when it comes to installing new software in case it breaks something. "Stick to the libraries in apt then!" i the mantra, but very often interactions in our more and more connected world requires software that is not always in apt. One example is discord. Not to speak of all web browsers that gets outdated. As I understand Debian 12 takes some kind of new stance to this long time "new software conundrum". A second video diving into this would be very nice.
@roomtemp6374
@roomtemp6374 Год назад
Flatpack would appear to be the new shiny for installing non-repo apps like discord with minimal effects on the host system. They're kinda porky, but I suppose an up to date universal containerized app with all dependencies included is a pretty good trade considering disk space is cheap by now. The few that I've tried seem to work okay. Just a small speed hit on launch, shorter than a sip of coffee, which I assume is due to creating the container it runs in. There's also appimages, snaps, and nix. I'd welcome Chris's take on these as well.

I still have two to go, and I have to upgrade the Web server from Buster to Bullseye (which I normally would have done by now, but I ended up being busy with other things when I would have done it). I have gone through and fixed/rewritten all of the deprecated PHP code, but I will have to do that all over again to prepare it for the upgrade from Bullseye to Bookworm. Of course one of my Bullseye to Bookworm upgrades is on a hypervisor for some of the other servers which are virtual machines. I have to be careful about that one. It looks like it should go smoothly, but I have to make sure I have backups of the virtual machines just in case I have to deploy them elsewhere.

Making sudo functional in this situation requires the user manually to be added to the sudoers group and a few symlinks need to be created. All in all I like the Debian family for its stability and the absence of unwelcome gifts like snap, but I would wish they could clean up their web site and make the installer a little bit more 21st century - the current one reminds of the time when SlackWare was still a thing. Solid video for a solid distro! 😉

This is exactly what I say in the video. :) If you set a root password, the first user will not be added to the sudoers list. Very much agree with your comments.

@@ExplainingComputers The more important point is that sudo is not functional for other users without some remedial terminal trickery.

Well done! Congratulations on stable 12. I've read an estimate in 'Linux Today' that 250 distributions have been created based on Debian. I run Slackware 14.2 & 15.0. Slackware is the oldest surviving Linux distro, predating both Red Hat and Debian...Alas, only 66 distributions have been based on Slackware --OK, you win 🙂

Thanks Chris. Another helpful video. Have to say Debian looks a bit more old-fashioned in the set-up [Bit like Win 95 looked] and a bit more complicated to install than a number of other distros I've tried. I wonder if this is why it isn't as popular as other distros. However, once it was installed it looked really good, though I too am puzzled why Nvidia drivers are available initially. Loving LM with GDE at the present and not tempted to switch, well, not yet lol.

I recently switched from Ubuntu when I purchased a refurbished pc for my home. It's been a while since I used Debian, and was pleasantly surprised with the gnome desktop & graphics. I am using Flatpak for the latest edition of Libre Office. My reason for switching is simple. I decided to use distros which are not being controlled solely by a commercial entity. Debian has been around for more than 30 years, and has a strong community base supporting it's distro. :) I wish IBM and Canonical well, more can be said about a free and open source GNU/Linux project like Debian.

I enjoy a lot watching your videos, one of my favorites channels on RU-vid, a question: have you ever try using Ventoy instead of Balena Etcher? I think is more easy to try different ISO, in fact one of my emergency USB I fill with important iso to fix any PC or to navigate on Linux in any computer. Greetings from Bolivia 🇧🇴

Thank you for another good video. Although I do not understand why you keep mentioning LXDE - LXQt has been its successor for several years now and is being prepared to be compatible with Wayland. Therefore LXQt is not only the present but also the future choice for a very lightweight full desktop environment.
@ExplainingComputers
@ExplainingComputers Год назад
I talk about LXDE because that -- as the video clearly shows -- is what Debian offers as an option (see 2:39 and 12:56 and 14:39 ). There is no option within Debian's install or desktop selection tool for LXQt.
@Schwarzer.Kater.YouTube
@Schwarzer.Kater.YouTube Год назад
@@ExplainingComputers I am sorry, but you are wrong: as you can see in your own timeline bookmarks number one and two there IS the option to install LXQt in Debian 12. The option to install LXQt with the installation DVD-1 ISO and with an LXQt live installation ISO has also already been there in Debian 10 and 11.

just installed debian 12 as my main os (after borking my partion table making dual booting infeasible), really enjoying it so far. It could do with a tiny bit more post-install guidance, in particular setting up sudo and so forth, but overall the process has been quite smooth.

I agree that in 2023 it's not great that one has to drop to the terminal to install the Nvidia driver. I remember, though, when one had to edit a text file and reboot just to change screen resolutions. Today, this also only affects one graphics card manufacturer, so it doesn't bother me that much. I find myself doing nearly half of my work in the terminal in any *nix OS, too, so it feels pretty natural to me. In Windows, on the other hand, pretty much the only thing I do via the command prompt is ping -t when I'm remotely updating servers.

Not super old for 32 bit though, last I recall seeing was considering dropping 486 support from Linux (386 having been dropped some time ago), this has dropped 586 (Pentium class) as well. Also, leaves an interesting choice... This with Cinnamon (and the need to do the odd tweak), or Mint (how long before it catches up)

This installation process is so familiar to me. In the past weeks I tried couple 32bit distros on my old laptop. I'll probably stick with xfce desktop.
