@Corpsefoot Gaming There's not that much math in D&D, it' basic addition and subtraction mostly, if that's an issue, maybe I expect people to be a little smarter than they actually are
Also among managers, CEOs etc. It plays well into the whole problem solving as a group, team work, interaction with others etc. It's a highly intelligent and welcoming game.
@Corpsefoot Gaming first of all no. Also, even in your example it's hardly an insumountable amou,t of math. It's often referred to as pen and paper gaming for a reason. Try writing things down.
She seems so lovely and nerdy. It's nice to see that she is so down to earth and so natural. Fun to see her slightly star-struck by Jeremy Crawford. A twinge of sadness and empathy to hear that she didn't have many friends growing up and super glad that she's found the D&D community and lovely people to play with now.
In the Navy when we were carrying Marines aboard ship to Iraq to actually go to war and really fight and kill people when During the travel I came across a group of marines spread out in the hallway playing D&D and they had their full gear on mostly with bulging biceps and their real guns set to the side. Yet here they were immersed in the fantasy of doing the same kinda things in D&D but so much more light hearted I'm sure. It was just kinda hilarious and surreal.
In D&D, the only reason you were clearing monsters from underground dungeons and clearing the wilderness of more monsters and bandits was that the original Restraining Walls keeping outsiders out were never built. D&D was heavily inspired by Tolkien where they went to the Mines of Moria, the homeland of the Dwarves, invaded by the Orc race and worse, and totally decayed from its state in the past. A more strict immigration policy would have prevented it, and the fantasy races could keep their kingdoms. This resonated a lot with White Suburbia, a different sort of refugee...
+XWolven I am not buying the story of Marines playing D&D together. They would never live that down. Now I could buy Navy personal playing with little figures on a board.
Cole Schubert that was the exact thought of my uncle who was a a Lt.Col. USAF at the time in the early 1980’s when he watched an AD&D session I was running with some friends. He thought something like that would be a good leadership tool and provide good opportunities for problem solving.
I was glad to see her in Force Grey, she seemed like one of the stronger players, but watching her one shot on SOME, I was genuinely impressed by her efficacy behind the screen. I hope to see more in the future.
I must confess I never seen True Blood so I knew very little to none about Deborah Ann until I saw her in Daredevil. Then when I was watching D&D Forest Grave in Nerdest to my shock I saw her in it. She seems like a very cool person to hang out with. Good for her that she is enjoying herself in D&D. Bless her sole. 😇😇😇
I only saw her in Daredevil too because True Blood while I love vampires doesn't seem like a show I would normally watch but I'm seriously considering it now. She's awesome
I honestly thought she was going to be a guest back when she was in LA for the stream, but it didn't happen. I know Matt has said he might try to get her in this campaign. We just need a good time when she's in LA for a bit.
I know Matt has offered a guest spot to her before which she turned down because of some concerns, but since she has done force grey and the streams, maybe she'll be more open to a guest spot on CR.
As though we didn't already love her enough. She's so great in DD and the Punisher I can't wait to see her in other things. She already looks like an elf- she's gotta do some fantasy stuff!
I love how one of the effects in people playing D&D is always, Well now I can't stop talking about it! Such a wonderful and exciting game and story platform.
Deborah is an awesome DM. Give that woman another one-shot. Or better yet an ongoing streamed group. Would love to see her spin on an an epic adventure.
Having first seen Deborah on "Daredevil", imagine my surprise to see her on the Stream of Many Eyes...so much fun! This is great. So many talented people enjoying this game. Simply fantastic.
haha Nerds are everywhere! Loved her in Daredevil, absolutely nailed her role. I would love to get a closer look at Deborah's chops as a player on my table ^_^
I totally love knowing that she is so down to earth and also do something that I care so much about and also feel simular feelings about D&D as most of us :-)
This is probably My favorite interview about talking about Dungeons & Dragons. It's so fun seeing who all plays dungeon and dragons how excited they get about talking about It.
Deborah, I saw you DM at the “Stream of Many Eyes” and was blown away. I have never seen anyone else who runs the adaptive player-agency style with props. That’s my jam. I need to win the lottery, because I’d LOVE to sit at your table, and then DM a table for you after that. Brilliant. Bucket list for sure. Talk to WoTC and get your own stream. And not a remote one either - an actual table like Acq Inc or CR.
@@Sheriff_K If you watch the video he's referring to (search her name along with D&D on RU-vid and it'll probably come up), she DM'd a one-shot. She gave the players a lot of freedom to do what they wanted how they wanted without burying them in die rolls and used physical props along the way. I think that's what Mike was referring to with "player agency" and "props". I'm excited to see how she does next year with her own series that I assume will be a full campaign without the time limitation that the Stream of Many Eyes session had.
She's been at this for several years. I think she got Charlie Cox and a few of her other Daredevil costars into the game while they were filming season 3 this past winter.
First interview I've watched with Deborah and this is all super fun info to find out about her. I've enjoyed her roles but this interview mades me really like her as a person :)
This is really awesome!!! I've been running 1st edition AD&D campaigns continuously since 1979, and I've never seen fantasy role playing as popular as it is now. This is a tribute to the enduring genius of Gygax and Co.!
Debora's adventure on SOME was so fun to watch and she was great fun on Force Grey too. I would watch more adventures with her behind or in front of the DM screen!
I had no idea she was so into D&D, it's so cool how passionate she is about it! I've always liked her from her TV roles but now it's awesome seeing this side of her and how excited she is about the game.
I watched how she handled herself when character lost her hand in Lost city of Omu and it was nice to see that she was like "cool". Thank you for being a great advocate for the game I have loved for nearly many years.
I know exactly what she means about feeling intimated! I've been wanting to play for so long, but was worried I wouldn't get it or be truly welcomed, so great to hear. :)
I help to keep D&D alive at the studio. It is such a join to see the first-time players having a blast, realizing what all they can do, and how solutions are formed. If Deborah is ever in Houston there is a standing invitation to a session, haha!
I love watching these videos. I've bodyguarded for celebrities before, and it's always an interesting experience when the mask falls away and you see the person behind it. Sometimes it's pleasant, other times ugly, but so far in every one of these videos I've seen you see the mask the celebrities have to wear fall away and reveal that bright-eyed inner child full of imagination who loves the game with a passion, and I love that :)
Being an old timer in the RPG world, it is fun to see people display such love for the game today. I've been both playing and DM:ing many of the good old versions of D&D, AD&D, WarhammerFRPG etc. during the 80's and through the 90's, so when I stumbled across this video and on to Matt Mercer's VA & CR it sparked a smouldering ember I thought was gone. Time to dust off my old grimoires and call together some friends! Thank you!
Twinsies! I've played and DMed since 1st edition AD&D, 2nd edition, 3.0, 3.5, up to Pathfinder, Warhammer (like you, the rpg, not the wargame), Star Wars (both the old West End D6-based system, and the D20 system), Call of Cthulhu (both the old Chaosium D100-based system, and the D20 system), Vampire the Masquerade and other World of Darkness stuff, some old Palladium games like RIFTS and Heroes Unlimited. I had a game group that fell apart several years ago and I got out of gaming, and just put it all away... I thought maybe I was just done with gaming. Watching Critical Role awakened the fire in me, and I finally got to join a new group and start playing again! It wouldn't have happened without Matt Mercer and co.
You are a bit behind on critical role or only started second campaign? Joe is in the first toward the end. He found a soulmate in Travis and they called themselves Jocks Machina (and reunited in character at the Stream Of Many Eyes)
She's fantastic! She has a great spirit and her desire to spread the joy of RPGing speaks volumes of her true personality. The truth is that story-telling arenas like RPGing help humans exercise their raw emotions and empathy. Smart gamers can use this arena to practice emotional skills. As an actor, she sees that clearly and embraces it; she revels in it. All gamers should come to this level of emotional stability. This process helps people every damn day. I love being a gamer. It's rewarding to see big name gamers as cool as she.
That's my story. Growing up I was also fascinated by D&D, but didn't have any friends. It wasn't until college, I met some really cool guys (and gals!) at work that played. That was over 30 years ago. I'm still friends with those people today, and now even my daughter plays D&D!
I’m the exact same, I’ve discovered D&D about 8 months ago and I’ve been hooked ever since, but since I don’t know anyone else who plays D&D I’ve never been able to play.
She is absolutely adorable just nerding the hell out over D&D. I wanna get into it too, just don't know who I can find. I have maybe a couple of friends who are familiar with it and one of them is actually big on roleplaying.
I can't express how happy this makes me. I grew up hiding my D&D books from my parents, because this was the time when 60 minutes put out their "D&D is from the devil and leads to suicides" special. The bullying, the misconceptions, all the negativity that we lived with when we were younger has been washed away (for the most part, at least, not completely). But the overwhelming positivity of this D&D renaissance we find ourselves in, the influx of players looking for that story driven experience, the phenomenal fem-DMs like Deborah, Satine Pheonix, and more. It's all so great.
She's so charismatic and clearly excited to share D&D with others. A great boon to the community! Would love to see more of her D&D content and maybe someday guest on Critical Role.
Defender's playing D&D with Deborah as the DM ? We can get a monk iron fist, a fighter daredevil, a barbarian Luke Cage, and I guess another fighter with Jessica Jones.
