"DEBRIS" a short film made in Blender

"A mysterious capsule spins through the vastness of space with no planned destination. Where will it end up and what lies within. Let's hope we never find out..."
After a few years of working within Blender, I decided to challenge myself to see what I could put together in the form of a short film that utilised what I currently had learnt in the software that is Blender.
I modelled, animated and edited the whole project within the program over a month on-and-off.
A big thanks to Adam (@ajheretic666) for the audio juice and additional thanks to the legendary Ian Hubert (@Mrdodobird) and Paul Wright (@PaulWrightythen)
It's a scifi cliche for sure but I wanted to post it as it becomes somewhat of a time stamp as to what I was able to achieve at this point in my learning of Blender.
Thanks for watching!!
"DEBRIS"
Directed by Mark Button
Sound design and Score by Adam Johnston

Having spent a whole year on my own film which is more documentary than fiction and having tried to learn Blender from scratch in two years and realising that I know 1% at best (harsh), your film is to be given the highest praise. I am someway behind you in technical feat and artistry but I can see it on the horizon, and so seeing films like this are a valuable inspiration. Thank you and very well done

Thank you so much for your words! We've all been in that position (especially with this program!) and if I can inspire in a similar way as the videos Ive been seeing then it makes me very happy! I had a hard time telling how fast it was supposed to be moving. It seemed to vary. At the speeds it would need to traverse that distance as quickly as it appeared to be, I'm not sure how it survived its collision with the asteroid. Its impact on the planet would be a pretty hard hit too, but I suspect the asteroid impact to be worse. What could that debris be made of? It's also rather common for asteroid fields to be depicted as so closely packed together, but the space between them would be (varying) kilometers wide. That said, watching this makes me wish I stuck it out with Blender. I tried it in something like 2005 (I think), with no 3d CG software experience, and didn't think it was user-friendly enough. I should have used it to learn the fundamentals and kept in mind that it could be updated and end up being a rather powerful free app.
@meb8707
@meb8707 Год назад
Thanks for your words Tyler. Admittedly I didn't give consideration for how fast it moved in terms of animation but certainly the impact on the asteroid was one of the few things I just couldnt get across the finish line in the way I wanted. The impact should definately have been more impactful given its trajectory but I just couldnt get the interaction to occur correctly so it does seem to 'bounce' a little softly off its course haha Thanks for watch though

Well, it seems, the capsule is intended to be manned, as there are displays inside. But it does no attempts to safely land on a planet. Yet, it detects proximity with an asteroid. I conjecture, the creature sneaked inside and ate all the crew members. The capsule seems unable to safely land on a big planet at all, let alone to launch from its surface back. So, the mission initially possibly was to asteroids.

I don't understand why so many commenters say the ending was "unexpected." I think it's precisely the kind of ending one would expect, from the first scenes onward. And once the capsule collided with space rubble, the ending was all the more predictable (though I would have expected a spray of bacteria or suchlike to come out of the capsule rather than a single claw).

Man, this ending is creepy as crazy!!! The debris sim at crash-landing, I think, needed to be mor spectacular. LOVEd the alternating compressed/un-compressed space framings, making the ship both very slow and very fast. It made a very uneasy feeling. Great visuals (your planet is akwardly splendid !), immersive sound. Take care

Thank you for checking the video out still got a lot to learn. Would love to have pushed the crash landing further. Maybe on the next one!
