I absolutely love this 30% idea. Gives you an extra goal while on the journey to pay stuff off. I'm going to adopt this plan on my journey. Thank you for this 😎

You got this, Alex! I am 42 years old and I paid off my cards and car last Christmas. This year I managed to rack up $7700 throughout the year, I am now down to about $1100. I JUST started the cash budgeting system this week and I am so determined. I paid a big chunk to discover and my credit score went up 42 points yesterday. The 30% under utilization is real so I commend you. Just remember, paying minimum payments with interest tacked on will slow down your process of paying stuff off. I felt like I wasn’t making any progress. Anyhoo, keep your eye on the prize! Sending you all the love! ❤

Just some advice don't close your credit cards. That'll actually bring your score down instead just leave them open and shred the cards. Also pay the credit cards before your statement date not when it's due to save on interest and pay them off faster. Advice from a former credit card hoarder and spender.

@@budgetblvd @budgetmealex I worked in a bank as a banker and also a credit card company in the fraud protection department & this is correct but not known by many. You want to keep your credit cards open even if youre not using them since a big factor of your credit score is length of credit history and closing a card is terrible for your credit. If you're unhappy with the card you can usually call and ask if you're eligible for a card upgrade. You want to have your utilization under 30% for each one. If you call your credit card company you can ask for your billing period and when that ends on your account- typically earlier than due date. You want to pay before your billing period to avoid unnecessary interest(they'll charge you even for a day if you pay past the billing period)
@desertrose00

You can close your credit cards. I closed all but 2 and my credit score is in 800s. You have too many right now. Keep one or two and close the rest.

Congrats on taking a step in the right direction. Honestly, any step forward is progress. Keep in mind that the 30% debt is on all rotating debt, not just per card, so your goal should be that 30% of total rotating debt. Personally, I'd attack paying off at least the balances with less than 1000 on the balances and you'll see your credit skyrocket pretty quick. My credit literally fluctuates between 725-800 on a monthly basis. If you aren't planning to buy anything on credit, don't worry about the score, it will be there when you need it. I wouldn't close the cards, but let the cc companies close them, it actually doesn't have much effect when they close them. If you're ultimately looking at getting a house with your credit score, wipe your consumer debt, and understand you DTI ratio. Id personally probably hit the Dave Ramsey plan up just to get the basic fundamentals in with BS 1 and 2 and really start the momentum. Or the Money Guys, or Budget Mom... They all are fundamentally sound.

I'm 50 years old...I've done HORRIBLY with credit cards my whole life aside from this year. I have 3 credit cards that ended up charged off and in settlement. One card is still active and I am at $830 balance owed on that one. I am set to pay off all of my cc debt by the end of 2023. This year I got hardcore. My best advice to you is after you've paid them off, try to refrain from using so many at once. Maybe just one and try to pay it off every month if there is a benefit to using it like cash back or airline miles. Otherwise, leave them open but stop using all but one and then slowly close them like 1 or 2 a year to give your credit score some breathing room. When I was 40 I filed bankruptcy, that expires next year also. my credit score is finally up to a 700 again. Set good habits for yourself now. Thank you for sharing and explaining your plan.

In January or even the part of December after Christmas, my advice to get an appointment with a loan officer at your bank, a local bank, or credit union. An in-person appointment noone charges your bank account for. Take a folder of your assorted paperwork but keep it in your folder until it seems right to bring it out. Fill out no forms, don't let them fill out forms, and definitely sign nothing while you are there; as needed, walk out even if you are at your own bank. - What you are there for is to ask how best to raise your credit score. You are there to ask if the credit score rules are changing and if your approach is a good one with the changing credit score rules; and what you should do or change. If your car loan is not financed through a bank or credit union, you might also ask what type of loan you could use to pay off the car loan and/ or transfer the balance, what it would take you to be able to get such a loan, and what the new payments would look like. - If you become serious about refinancing the car, do shop more than one bank and definitely a couple of credit unions.

Consider reaching out to some of the frugal living, decluttering, and minimalist living channels for ideas to live comfortably on a low spend budget. It sounds like you have at least a partial "use what you own" mindset. I'm not as big on tossing, donating, or giving away every thing extra from every corner organized, re-organized, or decluttered. I am big on gathering things together in a space so you can find them when you want to use them. If I'm living low spend either because I got a lot of "stuff" or I'm saving dollars, I will also look at some of my gathered and organized items and figure out how I can use them or use them upmto some degree.

New subscriber, even though I’m not drowning in any sort of credit card debt, I absolutely love the way that you’re paying this off! And you’re right you never want your credit above 30%, my problem is I use my credit card for my bills and then I pay Credit Card back, well it’s not for all my bills because my credit limit isn’t that high on my card but I max out every month and I pay it off every month. At some point I’m gonna need to see about getting a raise on my credit card because I need to be able to utilize that card and show that I can pay it off! Great job on the credit score going up, that is absolutely amazing. I love it! Keep up the great work I’ll definitely be tuning in and watching. 19:12

Omg thank you so much! Yeah it would be a good idea in asking for an increase. That’ll definitely look good on your score 👏🏼
@terryhenderson424
@terryhenderson424 Год назад
Definitely ask for an increase on your card's limit. But also begin looking for a card with a lower interest rate. In general low limit cards are also high interest rate cards. Folks want to know you will pay off cards and also that you CAN pay off the loans they have extended to you. Do look at some of the cash stuffers and figure out a way to open a savings account if you don't already have one. Then add to the savings account balance. If someone is going to take a chance on loaning you money (every credit card charge is by definition what is called a "short term loan") there is much less risk to them if you've got some money (savings) to cover (cash it out, pay it off) the loan balance (principle). If you are still in debt but paying off your new charges, use the Dave Ramsey $1000 emergency fund concept as your savings account money. If you are not in debt and paying off charges right away, begin to finangle your budget towards the 15% of income in savings, retirement (the younger you start, the bigger the passive income pot at the end of the rainbow), and/ or investments. And yes, there are investments that even low income folks can participate in.

I know how stressful that may be! But looks like you know what works for you. I have such bad OCD. I was in debt like 5k and what worked for me was paying off the smallest ones. Just made me feel like I had less cards to pay off. Then when I had like 2k left I took out a loan, paid off my credit cards and just made one payment for all my debt and that worked for me. Just have to make sure to not use your credit cards anymore. That way you have one payment versus all the random minimum payments for each card.
@budgetmealex

Yes! I like paying the little ones first because it feels so much faster to me. But yeah I need to really get some discipline with these things. Not using credit cards anytime soon unless I have the cash to pay it immediately 🥲

I really like the 30% method.. I find it really challenging lately for myself as well I made a budgeting journal and I have credit card debt but I also have loans that are killing me right now and that’s what my main real focus is the INTEREST is horrible. I got a MasterCard from Captial one that you put money on it and they match whatever you put on it up to 2,500 so this card is helping me pay debt now quicker and then every time i get paid i pay this card down , i just find this card is there right away and it also helps build my credit score which i really like. Plus, my hours were cut a bit so i get resources to help me and then i do work extra hrs when they’re available.

Budgetmealex is concentrating on getting the cards down to 30% balance of thier maximum limits with a goal of maximizing her credit score asap. The snowball ball method is designed to reduce the total monthly minimums then snowball the minimums of paid debt into additional debt repayment; in part this is to eliminate enough minimums to be able to breath. The avalanche method concentrates on paying down the largest principle first with the goal of paying the least amount of interest by the time all debt (principle) is paid; and then turning what were presumably higher minimums to more quickly wipe out lesser balances. The adapted avalanche method is to payboff the highest interest bearing debt first; again to reduce the total amount paid on interest and automatically put more of the debt payment cash flow on principle. There is an additional tactic which is a little more loosey goosey and takes more work. And that is to put the primary goal as reducing minimums. For many credit cards and also variable interest rate loans, the minimum payment is based in one way or another upon how much principle is owed. Lower the actual debt or principle owed, and you lower the minimum payment. Each card or loan has different terms and it requires calling the debt owner to ask how you can lower your minimum payment. If you dont seem to get much of a response, then ask questions like if you put $X dollars towards an extra principle-only payment, what would your new minimum be? This should give you some targets to aim for on at least some of the accounts. Realize that if or when interest rates increase again, your principle pay down may not be enough to keep your minimums reduced; on the other hand, the increases won't be as high had you not reduced your principle owed. When and as you reduce your monthly minimum payments it is critical to also decide when it is time to utilize the snowball concept of wiping out the principle owed on one or more accounts; this reduces the monthly minimums by eliminating them in an account by account basis. Once you have the cash flow to make the minimums, often it can be a good idea to tackle the debt with the highest interest rates; all the more so if doing so further reduces thier minimum payment. In some cases however, some of the highest interest rate cards and loans have lower minimums considering the amount owed. And then you have to balance reducing minimum payments on less expensive debt vs savings on interest. - Right now, it looks like your primary "pain" is coming up with your minimum payments.

Be careful on closing out to many of those cards. Especially the higher limit ones and the ones you’ve had the longest. My husband and I did the Dave Ramsey steps and when we paid off all our cards, we closed them out and had a HUGE hit on our credit score. We were high 700s and brought us down to low 600s😮😫. We’ve been working hard these past two years to get our score back up and we’re back to our high 700s.

Oh man, thank you for that advice! I think what I'm planning on doing is lowering all balances and closing a couple. For the bigger ones, I plan on using them for business, gas, and groceries and just pay them off with the cash I have for those categories in my sinking funds. Seems to be the most responsible way I can go about it lol

@@budgetmealex You got this! But I also would close any of them, but just cut them up as the other comment said. I have a few cards that I use during Christmas only to keep them open and pay them off and then never use them any other way, but years ago I did this. I had I think 9 cards and I closed two, just the ones that had the smaller limits and it still hit me hard credit wise because if you use your other cards, then your credit usage is higher overall because your overall credit limit is lower than it was before. Ex: You have six credit cards, all 100 dollars each and you spend 25 on two of them monthly. Well, you close one card and now you're using 50/500 instead of 50/600 dollars which is a larger percent. It's SO confusing but I would say leave them open and cut them up or I personally put them in my personal safe until it's time to use them. I do it around Christmas but you can also just use them when the company sends a letter saying it's been stagnant too long.

Those credit one cards are the worst!!! 😩 I remember getting one because of course my credit was horrible and they were the only ones that would approve me. But they charge you a monthly fee! Boo. So once my credit score was ok and applied to Capone which I looove them, I paid off credit lne, called and made sure that my account was paid in full even the fee, I think it was like a $5 or $8 dollar fee, closed them. I thought it would impact my credit, but didn’t since I closed them properly. And doing the 30% is a dang great idea! I will implement it, on my debt free journey… you would think i would learn my lesson working for a collection Law Firm, I would learn but nah! Lol, I am like you, I apply to all the cards that pop up on my credit karma pre approvals lol… uuuhhhggg. Anyways, great video!

9/10 people will use the full credit limit available to them. A financial goal for your future should be to keep only ONE credit card with a low limit (for example $500 or $1000) to use for online purchases. A big help for me was when we made sure to have planned sinking fund spending for a range of categories. It’s not always fun to say no to something you want but the freedom you have long term is worth the temporary sacrifice. My point is if you don’t have access to credit you won’t find yourself in this situation again. Without relying on credit cards you can properly save for things before you buy them.

Question - do you plan to pay for your birthday trip, wedding, etc. in cash? If no - I wouldn't do it. Time to convert to a cash-only basis. If you don't have the cash - you can't do or buy it. I would start saving now for those events - if you have money left over from paying debts. But under no circumstances would I put those expenses on a credit card.

When you get more of these cards close to and at your 30% limits, look at trying to get some of your limits raised. The advisability of this depends upon whats going on in the credit world at the time you ask. They are suppose to be tightening the credit world. If not a raise in the limit, then a drop in interest rate. As you reduce your debt load, don't forget to try to get your vehicle and all other insurance rates dropped. Often insurrznce rates are tied to debt load or credit rating.

@@DavidEVogel Certainly for this segment of the journey, the emphasis is on paying down debt while retaining and increasing her credit score. And, yes it does sound like this is at least round two budgetmealex's of racking up then paying down debt. And that does lend one's self to the label of "habitual over spender". And yes, it does seem that more than one utuber out there classifies things I would call wants as needs with quite an assortment of rationale; and they encourage each other to do the same. But, it is a journey and we have yet to learn what money management lessons Budgetmealex has yet to learn.
