The whole “no nasties” trend, can’t stand it. It’s totally meaningless and I lose a little bit of respect for even good brands that use language like this. “No nasties, no parabens, no sls, and free of over 400 potentially harmful chemicals” like free of gasoline? Arsenic? Hydrochloric acid? I sure hope so!
I know. I was addicted to physical exfoliation few years back. It's like instant satisfaction. Now I only do it maybe once or twice a month, only if I need to do something last minute
yeah i'm in the same boat. speacially because when i go light and nice with my skin it's gets mad and congested so i have to go harder and get rid of dead skin cell
I use gommage peels when I want the satisfying feeling of scrubbing my skin, without the harshness. But I understand that it might be better for some people to avoid manual exfoliation entirely.
To be fair, all other beauty gurus have mentioned this channel since forever. I found this channel through Susan Yara few years back when she keep recommending Michelle's blog. N I hear all skincare gurus mentioned this channel all the time. At least these gurus played their part in directing viewers here 😊
We gotta stop punishing our skin. We take our face n its appearance sooooo personally that we almost treat it like an arch enemy. Give ur face some hydration n loving ❤ 💗 💕 💖 💓
As a teen I was always planning to use all of these “diy-peeling masks” with like coffee grinds or aspirin. But being the adhd-teen I was I just always forgot to do it and boy am I happy about that now when I’m a skin care nerd ten years later!
I use the Cerave SA cleanser when I shower and that has cleared it up! To get rid of the blemishes I’m using cerave’s retinol resurfacing serum + hydroquinone. Even the HQ by itself goes a long way in lightening the dark marks.
I would be grateful if you said something more about how telogenes in the skin work. I remember years ago reading a terrifying article about how exfoliation and reinoids shorten telogenes in our skin and therefore are really harmful in the long run. It successfully put me off using those in my skincare until now. I know you mentioned somewhere that that's not true and that's not how skin works, but I'd be interested in learning something more. Thank you for this video :)
Medical student here so I have a lot of biology/biochem background. Telogens are part of our DNA. When our cells turn over, it requires them to copy our DNA for the “daughter cell.” While the copying happens, due to the way DNA is read to make the copy, it misses a small bit of the DNA. Telogens are essentially caps on the end of DNA (think like the caps of our shoe laces) that prevents the DNA from fraying. As our cells turn over throughout our life, this leads to the cap getting smaller and smaller. That’s why things that increase cell turnover (like exfoliating and retinoids) can lead to these telogens being used up sooner. We also have an enzyme called telogenase whose job is to replace our telogens, but we can’t simply give people more of this enzyme bc it can lead to uncontrolled cell growth which could develop into skin cancer.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience That would be awesome!! We need to make sure of having more scientists than charlatans in the internet. Thank you for everything
The secret to have perfect skin , is the right amount/ kind of knowledge , products , percentage , sun , food , water and etc. And that why i have bad skin
@@semirelatablesarah Mine is called Skinoren - it's an over-the-counter acne medication found in Europe and Canada. It's worth noting that in some countries AA strengths above 10% are available only by prescription.
I pretty much stopped using exfoliants after Dr. Dray said washing your face with your hands does exfoliate it somewhat. I may use the Inkey SA cleanser on my face every 2-3 months or so (for fun hehe), and my skin’s doing great! Much less stinging.
Great video! Something I'd be interested in would be what ingredient you can and cannot use together, one of the reasons I stopped using benzoyl peroxide in my routine is because it doesn't work well with most other actives for example, but I only found out about this a few months ago and I feel like it isn't common knowledge
Omgggg thank you so much for #5, I’ve been so sad I “couldn’t,” use retinol & ahas at the same time (even though I do it anyways with WONDERFUL results) now I can do it confidently 😭❤️
I used to use physical exfoliation almost everyday but now I’m older and wiser and do it no more than twice a week and my skin has really benefitted from it. However, all the hate physical exfoliants get made me worried that I still shouldn’t use it. Thank you for debunking that myth!
Please do a video on ingredient mixing truths and myths!! There’s so much different info out there I.e can vitamin c be used with retinol and it gets so confusing 😭
I don’t wanna ever go through over exfoliation again(thanks Satan Ives walnut scrub 🙄). Looking back I was definitely destroying my barrier in my early teenage years. Bless chemical exfoliants, great video!!
In Germany we often have UV Index 1 or 2, 3 sometimes. And sometimes more but we often don’t. Like today at 1-2pm UV index 1, now it’s almost 3pm UV index 2. Do I still have to use sunscreen? With exfoliating I try to not go too harsh and I try to balance with serums and moisturizers. Hope that’s fine.
Wear your sunscreen whenever the sun is out (i.e., daylight, not nighttime), even when the UA Index is low. UVA rays can penetrate the clouds, so even if you're not getting a tan, UAV rays are still reaching your skin.
@@tima2553 It doesn't matter. You put on sunblock every single day because even if you're not getting a sunburn, short UV rays can still reach your skin.
Maybe watch some of her sunscreen/spf videos if you haven't already? I think she talks about when you might not need sunscreen in her do you need sunscreen indoors video and a few others. Don't quote me on this, but I do think she said in Australia (I forget the exact source) it is only recommended to use sunscreen if the uv index is 3+.
Thank you for this. I have Fitzpatrick 4 skin, and I've been watching a lot of videos on skin care for hyperpigmented skin where they're saying we can't exfoliate.
Thanks so much for always giving us such great advice. Even though I'd been regularly using aha/bha products for years, with so much excellent nerdification under my belt from you when I started using a retinol I was able to do so carefully and gradually and didn't have any bad reactions. Six months later my skin is really starting to get a great glow. Absolute superstar 🌟 thank you! 😊
Thank you so much for making this video! I was planning to ask you about physical exfoliation. All of a sudden it's bad because of "microtears", but then people are derma rolling. Isn't that causing "microtears?" Anyways, love your videos!
I wish i could find more info about the same topic as the last myth but with peptides. I really cant use "buffet" for example after TO glycolic acid? is it 100% true?? Maybe that could be another topic because i don't find much info about it (the why not's) Thank you! Great vid x
Thank you for doing this video! I've been looking at the issue of hyperpigmentation with glycolic acid and other Ahas because of the same fearmongering done amongst people like me (South Asian)
I love using the ordinary AHA 30% solution on the calluses on both my hands and bottom of feet. It saves me a lot of time and work from filing them. I never dare to use the aha solution on my face though...
Pleeease talk about shampoo. Are there hair actives? Do they do anything? since hair is queratin... other than not harm, is there something that does any good? What are bad hair products?
After going on accutane, my skin just could not handle any chemical exfoliants. It actually caused a lot of irritation and break outs. I stopped exfoliating from about a month. Then introduced my Foreo device 3 times a week instead of chemical exfoliant. My skin has never looked better. I was always feeling as though I was doing something wrong by not using chemical exfoliants, but I listened to my sensitive skin and I’m happy with the results
Me: want to do my skin care routine after washed my face * get RU-vid notification * Me: 😭 Okay2. Skin care can wait. Lab Muffin can't! (also I am learning how to exfoliate. That's why). Stay safe and healthy, Michelle and everyone! 🌈💖
Brilliant video! I’d be really interested to know what the consensus is on using chemical exfoliants and vitamin C at the same time is? I’ve heard conflicting options: that you shouldn’t combine them because of possible irritation but also that, because the products are likely to be a similarly low ph, they could compliment each other - but don’t know what the truth is!
Thank you so much for this video, especially for clarifying Myth #4. There’s so much information on RU-vid, a lot of it word of mouth/unverified, so it’s nice to have someone dig deeper into the data to clarify and inform.
I am confused whether I should continue using a chemical exfoliator every other day if I am using a cleanser every morning that has gentle exfoliating ingridients. :(
@Quac Kookie ohmyyy really? Gee thanks. I'll change my cleanser. Should i continue the chemical exfoliator every other day tho? if i have very oily skin?
PHA is great! I'd recommend a gentle physical exfoliant if you want to go gentler - konjac sponges are great! It's also possible that your skin doesn't need exfoliation.
I really appreciate you and your explanation of overexfoliation, physical exfoliation (and no microtears), and exfoliation in general over the years. It has helped my skin so much and helped me understand why! You the best.
Hi! not a myth related suggestion.. but, I LIVE for your videos. Could you make a "how to treat body acne at home/body acne routine/ingredients" please?
a myth I always heard was "BHA/SA is better for treating acne than AHAs because it penetrates deeper, and can get into your pores." this really confused me when I learned that glycolic acid had a lower molecular weight, and therefore penetrates deeper, than salicylic acid. now I know that the reason BHA is effective for the treatment of acne and other issues related to sebaceous glands / oil, more-so than glycolic acid and other AHAs, is because it's oil soluble and will be drawn to areas with oil. on the other hand, AHAs are water soluble and lipophobic. (i think)
I am glad you explained the 5 the point ,retinoid +chemical exfoliant!! I always had a doubt. I am an Indian used glycolic acid30%peel, twice a month ,for 15 years .
Great video! Thank you for educating us. For the past 60 days I’ve been using the ordinary’s 0.2% retinol after using a physical exfoliator (once a week) and I haven’t experienced any issues.
I love your videos but I so wish you would slow down lol. I struggle to keep up!! So much fantastic information am I the only one to ask this? Xx 🏴
with the whole skin getting more sensitive - would it be better to use it less frequently in summer? Or does sunscreen completely counteract that issue and it's fine?
I wish that I had known about over exfoliation when I was going through that 'bad teenage skin' age back in the 90's/00's and the suggestion of using those 'scrubs' daily. Hell, even up until a few years ago I was using physically exfoliants daily and wondering why my skin never stopped breaking out until I quit using them. At least I've learnt my lesson and in my brand new skincare routine I'm only using a cleanser with salicylic and glycolic acids a few times a week, fingers crossed it'll be something that works for me!
Super helpful video! I recently started using a BHA and stopped using my adapalene gel. Now I know I can possibly layer them to hopefully clear out my pores and blackheads. Thanks!
Such a helpful video! I've used 1% retinol products and I've used tretinoin. I've found my skin is much more sensitive to chemical exfoliants than it was before using retinoids. I choose not to use chemical exfoliants, including BHA 2% more than once a week. I've stopped using glycolic acid on my face but may try a lower percentage later.
what I always wondered was howcome you can find products with like 30% AHA but still just 2% salicylic acid. never seen more than 2% except some sketchy amazon products. it's weird because i imagine ahas and bhas can both burn you, but yet it seems like they only restrict the concentration of bha.
Hi, I use a La Roche Posay chemical exfloliating serum and I find my skin dry and escamating and don't really feel the benefits I did when I used peeling gels. Is this a common side effect? does this mean that my skin does not like chemical exfoliants or at least that one? I have acne-prone sensitive skin, and I really trust la roche posay as a brand and this product, in particular, has great reviews however i find my skin sad without glow and really easily breakable (escamable) Hope someone can shed some light on this! love your videos! thanks!
I had really bad flaking in my eyebrows as a teen and the St. Ives scrub was sooo helpful. I only used it 1-2 times per week but it was the only thing that helped.
Thankyou so much Madam. I watch your informative videos and learning a lot on skin care. Can you please do a video on skin care gor dark, dull, dry and pigmented skin. I mean market is flooded with skin care products and you tube is flooded with beauty bloggers. I'm and of course people like me are confused to select a set of skin care products for their skin type and concern. I will be grateful to you if you make us more clear on above mentioned points by recommending some skin care products available in India and that really work. Thankyou.
People seem to think the electric spinny facial brushes are the devil. I use them all the time! They help exfoliate my skin! It feels sooo much better. It lightens my acne marks too. What are these people who seem to think it’s gonna rip my face off doing?🤨
7:00 wait... WHAT? are you really sure about this one? this has to be like one of the most common myths if its not true. for years i have avoided this... not because of irritation but because i genuinely thought the retinol was supposed to be like, broken down by the acid. and it made sense to me since i knew retinol was so unstable. unbelieveable.
I've actually had limited effectiveness with chemical exfoliants in my experience. I prefer physical exfoliants haha. no regrets even though I would be looked down in the skincare community
As a woman of color there are people when you get your eyes microbladed that can permanently lighten your lips. It has to be a chemical and I want lighter lips. Is this safe? Are there chemical procedures out there can give you this result of lighter lips?
Hi michelle can I get your thoughts about verdio uv gel sunscreen sooon? It's dr dray approve for oily skin.. I cannot get enought reviews about it.. Sending Love from the Philippines💗
I love that you mentioned that there is an absolute difference between a peel or a chemical exfoliant and a physical and that you also busted so many of the.myths! Thank You🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 I believe in using a gentle physical exfoliant every day and have taught our clients to use one before washing so that their cleaner ( we call it face food ) can penetrate easily and the exfoliant has already removed the sebum( dirt, oil and dead dry skin) for example. We have an exfoliant with gentle ingredients that can be used every day. ( coffee, pomegranate and hibiscus). I personally do not believe in chemicals exfoliants, in the over thirty years I have been caring for skin, we see to much damage from people doing them wrong and the fact is after you “ burn “ the skin the result does not last and the skin is actually worse. I see to much of it here on RU-vid as well. The key is to exfoliate gently and feed your skin and be regimented. No foundation or concealer and wear a wide brimmed hat and a zinc oxide ( my favorite) sunscreen outside. Loved how you explained everything and I hope you don’t mind the extra skin cAre love. What does one do about overexfoliation/having ruoned the barrier? 😅 I might have f* up my face so much that my forehead always feels dry even after cleaning with a balm (erase from pestle and mortar) or even my la roche posay cleansing milk.. 😅 also my skin barely takes in any cream I put on.. 😅
Hi Michelle! Thank you for debunking these myths! Awesome video. I was just wondering if you could possibly address the myth (or truth) surrounding the use of retinoids in antiaging and the Hayflick limit? I couldn't find much on this particular problem and it is making me really wonder if it might be a better option to give up retinoids. I would really love it if you could address it as I love your teaching style and you always help me understand key principles that I am missing!
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience thank you for your reply. I watched the video again and see that you do indeed address that there's no need to hold off on retinoids until you see signs of aging but I was hoping if you could perhaps address the Hayflick limit specifically as some of the posts I saw around this particular issue sound plausible but I can only gauge that from a layman's perspective
I have a “crusty” skin type. Which is also why I’m a chronic sufferer of dandruff. I’ve tried many “superior chemical exfoliants” which successfully drained my wallet and irritated my skin. Even with frequent and heavy moisturizing, using oily moisturizers to seal in the moisture, and occasional exfoliating. I still get crusty and flaky skin, it’s only visible with makeup though. I settled with, cleaning my oily zones more often than the dry parts of my face. Using salicylic acid where I need it, instead of the already dry parts. When I don’t physically exfoliate, skincare and makeup just sits on a layer of dead skin. I figure it’s best for me to see a professional, it’s just a matter of when I’m able to.
I got a new cleanser (FaceTheory Clarifying Cleanser) and it’s 4% glycolic acid, 2% salicylic acid and 1% lactic acid. It tingles when I use it but doesn’t burn but I am amazed that they recommend using it daily! I stopped using it even though I was having no negative reaction to it because I definitely felt like that was over exfoliating using this strength of acids DAILY even though my skin was fine. My gut was just telling me that cleanser was too much. So instead I use a gentle daily cleanser and use a scrub 2/3 times a week that has a 2% glycolic acid and 1% salicylic acid and gentle jojoba beads for a physical element too! As I said even though my skin wasn’t having a bad reaction to the cleanser I was so worried about destroying my skin barrier!
I safely use 1) Pixi Glow tonic (twice a day), 2) Retin A (nighttime) and 3) a sensitive skin FOREO Luna 2 with a DHC rice enzyme powder (morning only) and I have found this to be the best regimen for exfoliating my skin without the side effects of over exfoliating.
Can you talk about how some people wait 20 minutes between products ( particularly AHA and BHA) to make sure each product works effectively at their ph. I thought it was a little bit ✨extra✨that some people wait a long time before applying another product. Like is waiting really necessary? Would an exfoliant with a ph of 3.7 be dramatically effected when applying a hydrating product that has a ph of 6.5?
Thank you for addressing this,i nearly throw away all my glycolic acid product cos some Dermatologist/Doctor said "YOU CAN'T USE THIS ACID FOR SKIN OF COLOUR"
Is it also a myth that physical exfoliants that are too harsh/sharp inevitably cause microtears then? Like, could you still use those in moderation? I remember seeing a scrub with walnut shells being criticized because the grains from crushed shells have sharp edges which would supposedly cause microtears. I've heard similar things about sugar scrubs and some brushes.
Can using salicylic acid (2%) everyday cause over-exfoliation as well? I have dry skin and break out a lot, and I think I am overusing my BHA to cure acne because my forehead looks so shiny, and my skin is so tight and dry and I'm breaking out even more.
My skin just reacts to any direct acid exfoliators :(( they make my skin so angry and sensitive. I've switched to the Niod Non Acid Acid Precursors are my skin seems so much happier!! unsure if the product is proven to work as an exfoliator but my skin seems happy :)
I feel like such a baby when it comes to chemical exfoliants; I've tried so many and no matter their concentration/type/delivery system it used my skin just did not...feel good after. Hurtful stinging, excessive flaking/drying of the skin, just not a good time. Physical exfoliants on the other hand I feel almost never betray me, and while many didn't seem to do much to my skin they rarely if ever made my skin feel like it was on fire. To me it was like with physical exfoliants I am much more in control.
