one of the first video essays on this channel was about ariel's pink princess dress in the little mermaid and now nearly three years later we're revisiting the subject. her pink princess dress is perhaps one of the most controversial outfits in the entire disney princess universe, with fans coming up with various theories to explain the dress's less than flattering nature. in today's video we decided to talk about some of these disney fan theories and explain why they aren't as likely as you'd think.

I think it not matching her coloring is actually a bonus - of course they wouldn't have anything that specifically matched her. Eric's housekeeper probably sent a maid down to the local dressmaker shop for a reject or something - anything - close to Ariel's size and then did some amazing (and rapid) tailoring to make it properly fit her. Hence why the rest of her clothes match better, but also seem significantly less complicated. The staff had to improvise to get this mystery girl acceptable clothes and had more options for the less formal stuff.

Never understood why people were so against Ariel's pink dress, especially considering how its puffed sleeves are clearly an ode to Snow White, which to me, reads as paying tribute to the originator of the Disney princess brand. While I do think Ariel's restyled tealish-green dress looks pretty on her as well, she looks great in the pink dress, and as MG mentions, other characters in the film think so too. Besides, if we're going to discuss how it supposedly clashes against her brilliant red hair, let us not forget she goes into town with Eric wearing a *light* blue dress, when it's *dark* blue that is most often considered to work well with bright red...♥💙

Speaking for myself, I think the pink/red combo is reallllyyy hard to pull off in a way that looks "classy" like a ballgown would be, though that may be partially because Ariel's hair is cartoon-red and not a more natural ginger. I also think pink seems like it was chosen out of convenience because only Aurora had a pink dress and she isn't as popular a princess as ones such as Cinderella or Belle. But I agree it really isn't so serious as some people make it out lol

I must be an outlier, or maybe it has to do with undertones, because I always thought redheads looked amazing in pink! I even loved when I dyed my hair to be a redhead for a while, how pink looked on myself. Even Ariel’s bright red hair and the pink as opposed to natural ginger, I still think it looks nice together. Maybe because pink is pretty much just a lighter version of red? Although like most fans, I do love her blue peasant dress the most. I’m a sucker for the large bow in her hair too.

@andieallison6792
@andieallison6792 Год назад
Its because of her hair color
@angelwings06
@angelwings06 Год назад
It was more of a way to distinguish her from the other princesses. Initially Cinderella was in white/silver (like her dress in the movie), but there were whisperings about selling wedding dresses to children back in the day (which they have no issues with nowadays), so they changed her to blue. The problem was that Aurora was already in blue because that's the dress she wore the longest in the movie, so they had to switch her to pink. However, Ariel was already in pink because it matched her movie dress, so they changed her to green to match her tail as a mermaid. Which was all for nothing because later Rapunzel came in later with purple/pink, and Merida with green. 🤷‍♀️ Edit: In my opinion, I think they should just change everyone into the outfits that are most recognizable, in their original colors, from their respective movies, and to stop this flip-flopping. 😤
@kaflora
@kaflora Год назад
@@angelwings06 I think they need to understand that audiences don’t really remember the princesses solely based on their gowns and it’s OK to have some princesses wearing the same colors as others lol BUT on the other spectrum when it comes to merchandising I understand why they want to have strong choices when it comes to what dress is associated with what Princess.

I actually prefer the pink dress over the seafood green one. I think this coral pink is actually quite flattering on her and the shape of it is prettier than the green one made after. Weirdly enough, I actually like the pink dress on Ariel because of the saturation of the colours. The pink being so light makes it is easy to see against the deeper red of her hair; the colours don't blend in together, so I personally don't find that it clashes. But, that's just me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@m20047
@m20047 Год назад
not that it clashes but it just kinda washes her out compared to the green, blue and purple clothes she wears they just pop more and bring more life to her design. The red and pink combination just feels monochromatic in a way because pink is just a light shade of red and it’s not as complimentary in comparison to the cooler tones which are more likely to stick out and be remembered.

@Ultimatrix1010 Complimentary colors are literally translated as clashing colors in my country, so I would say it’s matter of opinion if you think they look well together. They make each other pop more so if that’s your goal you can say they are complimentary. But when you are wearing clothes you want to pop and not your clothes, so wearing colors that clash against each other and take attention away from you is not often a good idea. It’s better to find colors that suit your skin tone.
@purpleclaws202
@purpleclaws202 Год назад
@@sarasamaletdin4574 well this movie wasn't made in your country bitch. Its an American movie. And guess what? That's not how it works. I'm an artist and pink and red look good together sometimes but when it comes to character design and a color pallette that's well to the eye, that's when complimentary colors come in. Ariel has neutral skin color meaning it's warm with hints of cool but they appear more cool because of her blue eyes. Therefore cooler colors look better on her, and including her bright red hair, justify the fact that THE PINK DRESS DOES NOT LOOK GOOD. I generally find in depth theories about Disney characters to be a little superfluous at times. I think it’s absolutely valid to identify with, enjoy expanding on and gravitating to characters and themes that bring you joy- but I think when people spend a lot of mental and emotional energy delving into villains tragic backstories to justify their actions, explain things that don’t need to be explained in heroes and princesses usually tinged in negativity- that’s the moment when I want to say “this character doesn’t have a mother, they don’t have an origin. They don’t have wants or needs. They’re a cartoon- a drawing. They exist in the confides of this narrative to tell this story and that’s it” and I am really not a hater. I actually wanted to be a Peter Pan face character for the longest time because I look like him and I do love Disney. I just don’t see why people enjoy mining negativity in childhood media by deciding things like this dress is ugly and here’s why that is rather than “I just don’t think it’s flattering”

Where they still feel maybe some reverence or kinship to stuff they loved as a kid, but then they feel the need to undo it and make it as if it was darker sadder or somehow worse as if to excuse the fact that they’re enjoying it? I’m glad we’ve moved past this as a society but I used to haaaaaate when people would try to explain away any cartoon as “it represents the 7 deadly sins” “the characters represents mental illness” “did you know they were dead the whole time?” I don’t know it’s just when I sit down and watch media I connected with as a kid maybe I’ll pick up on different things I didn’t notice back then, maybe I’ll think about it a little more but I won’t feel the need to push it into bizzarro world negative territory when it just brings me joy

I'd also like to add that Disney *clearly* did not find the color combo of pink dress + red hair to be an issue because THEY REPEAT IT in a completely unrelated scene - Ariel's nightgown. The purple dress from the straight-to-VHS sequel will unfortunately probably be never seen again because Ariel is a mom in that movie, not a relatable (to kids) teenager and also it just didn't perform particularly well afaik.

I once heard in passing that Ariel was originally meant to be blonde, and that they made the change at the last possible second when the movie Splash was released, which also featured a blonde mermaid venturing onto land for a guy. I always wondered if that would have impacted anything---though of course, that's only a theory that I heard in passing.

I liked the part where you said people coming up with random theories just to justify why they dislike the dress. There are some Disney wardrobe choices I personally don’t like; for example my favorite princess is Anna (another redhead) but I really dislike her light green dress from the end of Frozen 1; but other people might love and that’s okay! I’m curious to see how they’ll do Ariel’s pink dress for Halle Bailey and her complexion. Maybe a darker shade of pink? We’ll have to see!

Wonderful! Usually I worked on Ursula, but I'm one of the animators who drew Ariel in the pink nightgown. There was a lot of "Get it done!" on this movie and even after working 60 hours a week, there are portions that could be better. There simply wasn't time. When looking closely at the dress King Triton gives her, the quick scene of her emerging shows it to be made of sea foam. We didn't have time to make that clear. The scene where fish swim around her to lift her hair was meant to be a large school of fish. It was cut back to just a few, because there wasn't time to animate them all. I loved your observations about style and color! .............Disney animation wasn't doing well and the studio cared a lot more about live action at that time. The Little Mermaid got the green light, because Who Framed Roger Rabbit did well at the box office. We were watched closely and basically responsible for every sheet of paper and every pencil. Around that time, The Disney Company was even thinking about selling Disneyland and before TLM, a brief job I had at Mattel revealed hard times for them as well. Most of us were working on this movie, because we wanted to work on Disney animated features since we were kids. Disney took full advantage of our enthusiasm to bring you the very best we could produce. I didn't design the pink dress, so I can't expound on it's origin. Memory tells me the woman responsible for coloring the characters was on her way to retirement. When asked about the garishness of coloring, her response was that the TLM color palate was to reflect "fiesta time". I also wasn't wild about Beaty and the Beast's coloring, but Aladdin looks like perfection to me. ............TLM being the last painted cels in a feature also presented the challenge related to colors photographing differently than they appeared in person. From one film print to the next, even, colors could vary. Before video tape, I researched Cruella DeVil by attending as many theatre screenings of the re-released One Hundred and One Dalmatians as possible. Even attending a Spanish version ("Pongo, Pongo, me sumbrero!") I found that sometimes her flesh looked more purple, sometimes more blue and sometimes traditional "flesh" color. Gratefully, the spirit of this production carried it in to a lot of hearts. An empowered Disney didn't close down their animation unit, nor did they sell Disneyland. Mattel also seemed to do well off of the success of revived feature animation. It's adorable to see so many things read in to our job of delivering this movie on time for Christmas, 1989. Much love to all of you who keep The Little Mermaid alive and vital.

I remember watching an old behind the scenes video on the making of The Little Mermaid and it stated that Ariel’s hair was originally supposed to be blonde, but they couldn’t get the colour to look right or good for when it was wet so they opted for the bright red which also contrasts her green tail. Perhaps her dresses were designed for a blonde Ariel and were never changed when they switched her hair to red, her pink dress then (although still not the nicest dress) would have suited her more.

But anyway the really obvious point that every princesses' clothing reflects the fashions of the time the film was made does make it HILARIOUS that people will be argue that the movie must take place canonically in XYZ time because of the outfits. Like yeah Ariel's big-ass 1980s wedding dress sleeves obviously point to the movie taking place in 1823.

I read that Disney said her pink gown is how it is because its a combo of the 3 princesses that came before her. the pink and white color scheme, the sweeping peplum, and skirt silhouette are a reference Cinderella's 2 gowns the off the shoulder and pointed long sleeves are Aurora and the Slashing of the pink Puffs on the top of her sleeves is Snow White. I may be mistaken but im almost positive Disney has actually confirmed this. also i had no idea her pink gown was such a point of contention for ppl i always hated that they changed her to a teal gown and thought it was cuz they were already marketing a princess in a pink ball gown (Aurora) and that since Jasmine is in her pants its not as similar. I LOVE her pink gown!
@SerenaWhatever
@SerenaWhatever Год назад
While Disney has been using a green variation of her pink dress for lots of merchandise and in the parks, I think this is less because people hate the pink dress and moreso because a seafoam green dress is obviously more on-theme for Ariel as a mermaid while the pink dress clearly isn't- and also because Aurora wears a pink dress in most promo images and merchandising, so Ariel in pink would be too matchy and less visually distinct in a lineup with the other princesses; most dolls of Ariel still come in the pink dress, while the vast majority of dolls with the green dress usually come in a collection of multiple characters (again, likely to make her more visually distinct from the other princesses).

I prefer complementary/opposite color combinations but in defense of the pink dress, analogous color combinations can also be very pretty. The only thing that I dislike about the pink dress + red hair is the contrast between the two colors. Both are very saturated. I believe there was an attempt at fixing this in the later versions of the dress. (An example is Wreck it Ralph Ariel having a more magenta like shade of red hair to match the cool pink dress) The reason yellow “washes out” Cinderella and Aurora is also because there’s very little contrast between the characters hair and dress colors. Not because yellow hair + yellow dress is bad! Designs with less contrast can also have a very ethereal and elegant look if done on purpose. Overall I love this video and I’m happy you made it. The information is nicely researched as always. My comment is not intended as critique, I just wanted to add more information. I hope my this makes sense. English is not my main language.

More theories: -Snow White really died after eating the apple and the prince was an angel who took her to Heaven -Belle has Stockholm Syndrome -The Lost Boys were actually dead, Neverland was Heaven, and Peter Pan was an angel who carried souls. -Anna and Elsa are Tarzan's sisters -Jane (Tarzan) is Belle's relative -Carl (Up) is dead and when his house went up with the balloons he was actually going to Heaven -The Evil Queen and Gothel are the same person -The barracuda ate all the eggs and because he couldn't get over his grief, Marlin started to hallucinate with Nemo. -Chip is the son of the Beast and the sorceress, and she cast the curse because he didn't want to assume the son and Chip was in the care of Madame Samovar -Elsa is actually Rapunzel's twin sister. When the Kings of Corona discovered that Rapunzel had been kidnapped, they asked the Kings of Arendelle to take care of Elsa so that nothing bad would happen to her.

@@Beelzineff Ariel and Hercules technically are cousins. Triton is part of the Greek pantheon. But that said, the Disney universe doesn't always intersect. Some of them do. Some of them don't. The "wishing star" from Pinocchio does appear in other movies, but it's mostly for aesthetics. And somewhat coincidental. It's not that deep. So while they are... they also aren't because neither of them exist in each other's universe. It's not a good hill to die on.
