Debunking MKBHD Apple Durability Claims!

Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) believes that durability and reparability are on two other ends of a spectrum, if you want to create a durable product, it cannot be reparable. I don't agree with him, a product that is not repairable is not durable either, especially since most electronics are prone to failure or degrade over time. If you are bored of my talking speed, watch ‪@rossmanngroup‬ 's video next about repairability issues with iPhones and Apple's repair program, he talks way faster :)

A simple way to allow the battery to be replaced is to add a back cover with a rubber gasket and screws to secure it. That's cheap and doesn't require a lot of engineering. Ironically they just made Taiwanese and Chinese phone makers to be the hero. Saw the inside of a box of an Asus ROG phone 8 and Xiaomi I forgot the model of and they still have all those things you expect (cable, charger, case, and even the extra bonus goods). They still have the headphone jack as well. While inside the box of a Samsung S23U, the only thing they give is the cable, and the headphone jack is gone. Previously the S10 still came with those. Samsung is a lesser evil compared to Apple but they are following suit. So my policy is if you don't give that to me and try to charge me extra for it, then F you and I will refuse to give you money for it. No charger? I am going to get one of those ugreen or anker or whetever charger instead. No case? Yeah, I'll get one aftermarket case instead, one that is not of their brand. No headphone jack? Though I see your point, and I agree with you, I think you're mistaking longevity with durability. Things like increasing storage doesn't increase durability, nor longevity for that matter, that would mean time consumes storage or that your don't offload what you accumulate to a safer location, which might be more worrisome. Durability relates to materials, and to your point, they suck. Apple doesn't care about what would mean choosing more wearable materials, more brittle, sensitive to environmental factors, and design the products in a way that increases their exposure to damage, it seems it actually seeks them out sometimes.

Apple has brainwashed their users for a long time. Keeping the same design for years, locking people in their ecosystem and making it harder to use other things with it. Charging a premium for what they call NEW or best in class which is all bs. Break away from the bs and you will see alot of products out there have crazy specs and better things going on. The software updates are nice on apples side but then again yeah you need those updates badly because they dont make anything to be upgraded. Old macs you could tear down and customize and rebuild newer macs you cannot and most of the newer hardware is soldered which makes it even harder. You pay upwards of thousands for property that isnt even truly yours. If im paying thousands i want to be able to take full control of my device with customization and if i want to upgrade parts or run linux or other software i can. But other companies are starting to follow into this business model due to the fact not enough people arw speaking up about it and continue giving into it. Until the day comes when they give you precisely nothing for an insane premium. $2k -$3k for a device that they say will be the latest and greatest until the next iteration down and people will scramble for that next.

Yea but if you have the battery so easy to access you get rid of the waterproofness that it would have otherwise. The glass back is also just more premium feeling, I don’t want so plastic shell, I’ve had a lot of iPhones form when I was 13ish from a iPhone 6 to the iPhone 15 pro now and I haven’t broke the screen or glass once you just have to use some common sense, get a good case and a screen protector and your all good. Don’t get me wrong apple does make repairing there products harder then they have to be when designing then which they should be held accountable for and they shouldn’t be like that and they should also be stopped from adding codes to parts so you can’t change parts without having to exchange codes or chips from parts like there screens and batteries. Not having a head-home back doesn’t make you have to get Bluetooth stuff you can literally get a dongle for your headphones it’s that simple.

unpopular opinion: there is a big difference btw durability and repairability, yes, they are linked together but durability is how the phones hold up in everyday use, i have a 2010 Macbook and it is very much functional, it is made out of aluminum so it still looks very new with little scratches and it hardly gave me any issues, I used a hp laptop during school year and i had to change the hinge twice and the case (because the hinge was braking the case) before dumping it because of the same hinge issues. Also Apple never claimed they are making phones specifically for durability or the best in durability, also debunking your claims on the removable battery, apple batteries tend to last longer (durable) than Windows laptops before repair. you mention a faulty port soldered to the motherboard, please mention one port that isn't soldered to the motherboard in any computer. Mkbhd was invited by Apple (one of the most valuable companies) to check its durability center on the processes it goes through and every company has that durability process they go through. the video was unbiased and only reported the process, stop trying to bring a creator down for stupid reasons!!!. I don’t think your arguments make a whole lot of sense. In most cases you should be upgrading your tech anywhere between 3-5 years. I just upgraded from my iPhone 12 pro to the iPhone 15 pro max. The battery in the iPhone 12 Pro was at 82% which isn’t that bad considering that it was almost 5years old. Battery degradation is a problem but most companies have gotten so good at manufacturing these batteries that in most cases the battery isn’t usually the issue. Honestly Samsung has the worst track record when it comes to battery degradation. One other point to make is the swappable batteries from before were absolutely terrible. They degraded much quicker and they held less charge. At the end of the day I would rather just have a battery that I don’t have to worry about replacing for the life time of the phone, then have to spend $200 in a 5 year period to replace a battery over, over, and over again.

Also when it comes to glass backs on phones. I personally like the extra weight and how it feels. Yes glass is less durable but that’s also why you can just have a case on your phone. I personally rock my phone without a case and the only phone I have cracked doing this was the galaxy Note 8 and that wasn’t even my fault because my wife was the one that dropped it directly in gravel. If you want a phone that doesn’t have a glass back, there are plenty of budget devices that have plastic backs.

Your case regarding your MacBook is really unfortunate and I get your frustration here. I don’t get why a single USB-port should make a whole PC unusable. Apart from that, the video’s main talking points are at least 10 years old. User-Removable batteries are not a thing in most electronics these days. That is not an Apple-exclusive thing anymore for almost a decade now. The difference is, that Apple has as a solid repair network, where you can send your phone/Mac to, in order for it to be repaired. Sure other brands also have their repair services, but at least where I live, they aren’t so broadly available as the ones from Apple. The revenue generated from these services isn’t hurting Apple either. That’s part of capitalism altogether. Durablility and repairability are also two different topics for me. Durability isn’t just looking at materials. It’s about fluidity in everyday tasks for a long time and software updates. Apple has been the gold standard, where Android manufacturers are catching up, which is a good thing. Reliable and secure software is just as important. My 2013 MacBook Air is still running, while my Surface Pro 4's display was snapping out of its chassis thanks to the bad cooling system by Microsoft or better the lack there of. Also it doesn’t support Windows 11 officially, due to the Intel M3-chip, which is lacking the necessary security codecs. Your thoughts and talking points are valid, but they’re mostly outdated. Apple is one big fish in the sea of tech companies doing the almost exact thing. There are differences regarding upgradability of RAM (f.e Lenovo) or SSD (the largest Surface Pro 11). But overall, they are all following the same path. The real problem with Apple devices are the high price tags for their devices and the really expensive RAM and storage options , which are way higher than they need to be. Apple’s own ecosystem is enabling them to charge more, because their OS are Apple exclusive. So MKBHD isn’t the problem here at all.
@techmo2020

Thanks for sharing your view. I agree that these days all companies are doing it, that's why I showed the older generation of the phones. IMHO apple was a pioneer in mobile space and laptops. Before Apple started to remove all removable components, phones, and laptops were very different than today. Building stuff glued together is cheaper, I personally believe this is the main reason electronics are now all glued together and we are forced to accept it, they could design it differently so that it is both reparable and durable and my point was that durability and reparability are not opposite of each other. I think the surface is not the best example. I also had Surface before, they are basically trying to be apple, without the durability, which is the worst combo.

iPhone is perfect and reliable. I used to use the S23 Ultra, Pixel 8 Pro, Sony Xperia 1 V, and 5 V, but none of these phones met my expectations in normal use. After trying many Android phones, I had to go back to iPhone again. In my opinion, the selling point of iOS is Face ID and all the security features related to it.

MKBHD's comments on Right to Repair have alwags been "problematic" (as much as I hate using that word). It's obvious that he's too afraid to give new, legitimate criticisms and regurgitates safe, already well-known public criticisms. There are so much more tech channels with actual useful information/reviews. The only good thing about his videos is the eye candy. tbh, if you like eye candy, you might as well just watch an Apple ad.

Glass is way greener than plastic and also more premium. I can cope with the breaking stuff even though is not so easy for this to happen.

Makes no sense. All ARM chips are non-replaceable, they are system-on-chips meaning everything is soldered. So, the only upgradeable components are the display and battery, and iPhones are able to have these swapped out by an Apple Store. The example of the early Android having removable batteries is moot as all Android Oems apart from a niche brand, copied Apple and went for fixed batteries, for obvious reasons. As Apple says, it is more important to make products last with high QC than having less durable products just to make them easier to fix. I suspect most broken phones are down to misuse by consumers or are warranty issues. If you look after your battery and phone then Apple and others have proven that they are made to last. I still have 10-year-old iPhones and iPads that still run!

I understand where you are coming from, but I was not trying to say other OEMs are better than Apple, all of them should make batteries easy to remove, as the EU also makes a new ruling on it, and sooner or later they have to abide. On the other hand, some of the anti-repair trends, or making things hard to repair trends were pioneered by Apple, and I used the removable batteries as an example here.

@@techmo2020 yeah, I think Apple learnt the errors of their ways and are thankfully correcting that direction, now moving towards better repairability. Obviously they were forced to do it but we are seeing across the board improvements by many OEMs for display and battery replacements which are the main components that tend to go wrong. But I still believe that smart phones were looked after are extremely durable and reliable, especially the amount of use and abuse they take.

@@andyH_England I agree on durability part, if we put the battery and reperability issues aside, all the phones on the table still work to date even the first iPhone and iPhone 3G.

I think you just showed the downsides, i dont like that. Im not an Apple fanboy by any means, but some things they do is just amazing. For example Update support, my iPad Pro from fucking 2017 still rocks the newest iPad OS version and looks literally like new. I cant even think of an android tablet from 2017 that got Android 14. Same goes for iPhone. Yes, Google and Samsung now rock 7 years of software support for some devices, but this is just a claim by now. Apple got history of providing softwareupdates for 6-7 years. Also, youre case with your waterdamaged iPhone is kinda thin. What model, was it opened up before, ... I heard storys of ppl that lost their iPhone inside a lake for months and those things still worked. Furthermore, i was one of the guys that hated Apple for removing the headphone jack, but to be honest i dont even wanna worry about this shitty cable anymore, so i do not give a fuck about it since years, also the competition with some exceptions also dont provide it anyways.

"Google and Samsung now rock 7 years of software support for some devices, but this is just a claim by now." Let’s consider Samsung as an example. Until 2020, Samsung phones were only receiving two years of OS updates. However, during that year, they began to promise three years of updates, a promise they have successfully fulfilled. All their flagship models from 2020 have received updates for three years. In 2021, they extended their commitment to four years of updates. This implies that the S21 will be upgraded to Android 15 later this year. If that ends up being the case, why should we doubt their pledge of seven years of updates? They have never failed to deliver on their update commitments
@GAMERGEBITER
@GAMERGEBITER 29 дней назад
@@just_joseph157 There are still just a handful of new very expensive devices that get those 7 years. On the iOS side it has been a common thing that devices get very long support, thats the point. On the other side, Google, they got a whole website with failed/dicontinued services they promised.
