Debunking the 5 Biggest Lies About Hinduism - What You Need to Know 

I have been seeing many comments about the use of the word "Hindu" and how I am an idiot or "need to do my research" to learn more. Here is response to that: I have a library of videos and did address this topic 7 years ago. I am well aware of the origins of 'Hindu' but also acknowledge the challenge we have here in North America with identifying what our "religion" is. I have chosen to embrace the word "Hindu" and I don't see a problem with this. I have been teaching "Hinduism" since 2012 and its topic I address every year in my temple classes. So yes, I have done my research and I have spent a considerable amount of thinking about these topics. My advice to you: Don't miss the forest for the trees. While you are choosing to argue whether we should use the word "Hindu" my focus is making sure the next generation continues the tradition of Sanatan Dharma. That's where the work is and it goes beyond the word "Hindu". A kid growing up here in Toronto, Canada is not going to remain a Hindu simply because I said, "Yo bro, Hindu isn't even the right word - it's Sanatan Dharma".

Dharma propounded by the Vedic Rishis is eternal and universal; it can never be in danger unlike people bereft of knowledge & wisdom of Dharma. Dharma isn't a religion - it doesn't need a prophet, a savior or even a champion to save itself. But to protect yourself you will definitely need Dharma.

I'd like to correct one thing that demi-gods do exist in Hinduism. In Bhagavad Gita 7.20 it is mentioned : *"Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires surrender to other gods and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according to their own natures."* In the Raj Yoga book of Swami Vivekananda while commenting on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras he mentioned that: *"Those Yogis who do not reach perfection die and become gods; leaving the direct road they go into one of the side streets, and get-these powers. Then again they have to be born; but he who is strong enough to withstand these temptations, and go straight to the goal, becomes free."* What you said about the existence of a Supreme God, the absolute being is also true and is mentioned in the Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.11 as follows: *"He is the One God, hidden in all beings, all-pervading, the inner Self of all beings, the overseer of all actions, dwelling in all beings, the witness, the knower, the only One, free from qualities."* This sloka defines the concept of the Deva or God as the supreme, formless, and all-pervading being present in all. In conclusion: Our scripture talks about both limited and limitless beings.

As a Hindu, I believe in one God, one Supreme Paramatma with many different names and forms representing different aspects of His Supreme Power and Divinity. God is both separate from and part of His/Her Creation. I love how open and vast Hinduism is and that there is room for all kinds of beliefs and interpretations. That we are free to believe what we want. As for whether or not all religions are the same. I believe that while the way God is worshipped in each religion is different, many of the core teachings are the same, such as don't lie, bare false witness, spread malicious gossip about others, don't hurt or murder others, don't cheat, don't steal, don't have "other gods", meaning, don't make anything in life more important than God or don't worship material objects, name and fame, $*x and money etc..

Hinduism is not a way of life (nonsensical statement). One can say Sanatana Dharma (properly defined and practiced) is a way of life. Sanatana Dharma is not the Hinduism that is referred here. Hinduism refers to a diverse set of religions, with each worshipping a unique God. Hinduism is therefore pluralistic (or contemporary paganism). Although each sect worships a unique supreme God , they also accept and worship other versions in some form; therefore, each sect is also polytheistic. These vaguely categorized Hindus also go to Muslim sufi holy places , Sikh temples and Buddhist temples to worship. Therefore, they are best categorized as pluralistic. Many atheists and agnostics also call themselves Hindus. No other monotheistic religions (dogmatic) in the world allow such freedom within. It is a great thing to have such true democracy when nobody knows what the ultimate reality is. Vedic texts are considered to be more sacred than any other texts. Puranas were written 1500 years after the Vedas concluded with Upamishads and Vedanta. According to the Vedas, the ultimate reality is the Brahman, and it is unknowable at all levels. You cannot even describe it in any form or shape or give names to it, like different Gods. This Brahman has no attributes at all. It is a silent witness, and it does not generate Gods like the way it is corrupted by the Purana texts (especially the Bhakti movement). Therefore, ultimately, Hinduism is not a monotheistic religion at all. WHY do some Indians want to be like the other monotheistic religions? Does the term polytheism (or contemporary paganism) make you insecure?

You quoted Swamiji who belongs to a Vaishnava sect who worships Krishna as a personal God. They follow a philosophical school called Qualified Nondualism. Later you quoted Nondual school definition for reality as Sat-Chit-Ananda. They are not fully compatible.

The actual Name is Santana Dharma. Santana Dharma has many ancient scriptures that predate the bible by 1000s of years. Scriptures like the Ramayama, the Rig Veda and others.

Hinduism is a spiritual way that is based on karma ( action) and/or rebirth (reborn till you attain nirvana or moksha). It’s not centred around one god or one book. Traditionally Hinduism never forces any one idea on masses and it let individuals chose their own path and ideas of why we live and what we would like to do with life to make it satisfying and content. some believe in idol based forms of spiritual connection and others used meditation or yoga to connect with cosmos… It also believes in transformation into Sanyaasi when you are old or mature enough which means you give up the bondage with house/ land / cloths/ family/ Jewels/ other possessions of humans during the time they lives with family… This is why Hinduism did not grow across the world even though Hinduism exist for 3000 plus years…
