Viewer request overhead keyboard tutorial of Debussy's Arabesque No.1 divided into practice sections for fingering and playing 3 notes against 2. Musical examples are played at tempo then slowly. The tutorial is followed by my recording of the complete Arabesque.

By chance I came across this video. I am a 63 year old beginner. Very nice the way you play. Too bad I didn't start piano lessons earlier. But as it is in life. You never have time during your working life. Now I am retired and have started playing the piano. It is never too late. However, when you get older, you may need a little longer than when you were younger. But it is never too late to start playing the piano. Many regards from Germany.

Video dialogue as text for online translation as requested: Hello, I'm Paul Barton, and this my daughter Emilie who will be helping edit this video for you. A viewer requested an overhead keyboard view of Debussy's Arabesque No.1 for fingering, so what I've done is recorded the whole piece at tempo, then broken the piece up into small manageable practice sections which I'll play first at tempo then very slowly. The fingering I'm using is intuitive to my hand size, so if your hand can reach no more than an octave or a 9th, then this fingering should suit you too. If playing 3 against 2 is new to you I hope by listening to the slow sections will help you see how the notes fit together. Arabesque No.1 is a soothing piece especially suitable to play to a 9 month old baby for example.

+Paul Barton Thank you so much for this video. As a new pianist, the 2 against 3 concept is very challenging and your method of breaking down the phrases really helps put it together easier!

You can always get one for free and use a RU-vid tutorial to tune your piano. My friend did this and, although his piano isn't perfectly tuned (because of it being old and not in the best condition) he can still play whatever he wants. I'm from the UK and have found some pianos for free on Gumtree (www.gumtree.com/keyboards-pianos/uk/free+piano) but if you're from anywhere else you could always use Craigslist or whatever is best for your country. There's always a way for people to get a piano. I hope I helped / opened your eyes a little to the possible ways of getting a piano. Good luck!

When i started playing piano (self teach...) i played triplets as 3 semiquaver and 1 semiquaver silence. I was leaving to much time in between the last note and the almost accented first one. Then i played them slowly and again i was playing 3 quavers as in a 6/8 and then i realized that triplets requires time and a vast understanding of tempo so... How i got them right? i trained myself and played (doble beat!! if you single beat triplets its ez as hell and they will sound always diferented depending on the pulse you're felling at the moment ) 4/4 right or left hand triplets the other hand 2 quavers once you're able to "feel" the difference it'll stay with you for ever. of course no one told me this i've to self taught this so i'm sure there are many people with different opinions . I do not speak english please bear with my dreadful grammar.

Incredible! Thanks so much, I'm working my way through slowly and very much appreciate the help reasoning out the fingerings. Quick note that I noticed in the 7th and 9th measures you are playing "B" as the second 8th note in the left hand, as opposed to "C#". Note that this is only in the slowed down version, you are playing it correctly in the normal speed demonstration. Just a note for people learning the actual notes from the slow playback. Thanks again!!!

Dunno if this is too late but I had this problem years ago. What I did: play very slowly without the tempo and rhythm. Just play in sequence the notes correctly. Then add the rhythm until the notes are spaced equally but still play it slowly. Then slowly add increase the tempo as you play it correctly. Then keep practicing until you get the tempo you want.

Mr. Barton, thank you thank you thank you for this tutorial! I am playing from the Peters edition, which has ZERO fingering indications, so this video is a big help. One question; I don’t understand your fingering choice in the second to last section, the two hand shared arpeggio’s. In bars 97-98 you do what seems to me to be a rather awkward jump to move the thumb to the D# on the last three notes of each bar. Why not start the RH with 2-4-1, setting the thumb on the B to avoid this hand jump? The thumb passing under, esp. in the second bar, is a bit awkward, but it seems to fit the hand and the phrasing better then jumping the entire hand over. Thanks again!
@dradski1758

do you think its ok to have delayed notes when playing the last part (left hand first before right ) for B -A Flat and B - G Flat instead of playing those together @ 24:30 ( i think you actually did it 1x for the B - A flat pairing...) does that make any sense.

@Tuckermanz

It does. It's usually notated under the treble staff. If you see "Ped." you should engage the pedal until you see the release pedal notation, which is similar in appearance to a snowflake

Debussy rarely wanted people to use the dampen pedal. Little known fact but quite a few of his famous songs - e.g. clair de lune, say to not use the dampen pedal much. But most if not all people do it anyways

Wonderful video! There is, however, a slight mistake: in the slow version of the second phrase (the main refrain), the left hand plays [E - B - E - G# - B - G# - E - C# - E] for the last half of the phrase. The first B should in fact be a C# in that latter half, as is played in the fast version.
