Multi-award-winning conductor Bernard Haitink leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. They perform Claude Debussy's 'La mer, trois esquisses symphoniques pour orchestre,' known simply as 'La mer.'
Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918) wrote this composition of 'three symphonic sketches' between 1903 and 1905. Upon its premiere in Paris in October 1905, it was not well-received, provoking confusion and dismay among both audience and critics. But after performances in the United States and Britain, it was performed again in Paris in 1908, and then quickly became one of Debussy's most famous and admired orchestral works.
Along with Debussy's 'Nocturnes,' 'La mer' exemplifies musical Impressionism and serves as a transition between the Romantic and modern eras.
Bernard Haitink began his conducting career with Netherlands Radio: he became chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic in 1957. Later he was principal conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and held this position for 27 years. Today he is patron of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Honorary Conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Bernard Haitink has also been Music Director of the Glyndebourne Festival and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and Chief Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is an honorary member of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and since 2019, the Vienna Philharmonic. He has received numerous prizes and awards, including the Gramophone Lifetime Achievement Award.

(09:55) 2. Jeux de vagues (Play of the waves)

Sadly, Bernard Haitink passed away at age 92 in 2021, which means he directed this piece and others in 2009 at age 80!! He last directed a concert in September 2019, which means he was 89!!! Amazing and his directing was too!!

I was there, in Concertgebouw. I actually listened to this performance in Mar 2009. The program consisted of Mozart's 35th, Debussiy's La Mer, and Beethoven's 7th, all of which were so excellent and so touching that I can remember them as if I were listening in now. Although the maestro was suffering from a back pain at that time, we never realised such a disadvantage of his, due to the great rendition. Thank you very much, Maestro Haitink, and Concertgebouw Orchestra led by Mr. Eshkenazy.

I saw him conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2007. Mahler's 2nd Symphony, got a second-row seat. Truly amazing performance. When I reach his age, I'd like to just be able to stand up for that long, much less wave my arms around the whole time. Considering he started conducting the year my father was born.

This is my favorite Work of Music of all time! Debussy so, miraculously, has recreated the "Experience of the Sea"----he, feels the sea, he lives it!!!! Maestro Bernard Haitink, ALSO, saw something else, which other Conductors just fail to see, and, FEEL before them: The BEAUTY OF THE SEA!!!! He has so much command of the Orchestra, that he brings out the BEAUTY in each Instrument with such care and TASTE!!!! All the sections of the Orchestra sounded so beautifully, with the, exact Poetry of each phrase!!!! This is, indeed, quite a "Master's FEAT!!!! I can't ever forget the truly beautiful "Line & Color" that he culled from each and every one of the Instruments!!!! We, most certainly, need him, today, and in the Future, to make GOOD TASTE and Deep Insight---- Happ

I'm a college student here, my professor has shown us this work and I want to indulge for a moment. Debussy: La mer by Bernard Haitink is a piece that beautifully captures the essence of the sea and its hearts truth. Beautifully constructed and composed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in a manner of grace, this is my favorite work thus far!

Many modern composers have gone further than Debussy in timbre, study of modes, atonality, dodecaphony, seriality, sonorics, etc. But Debussy still remains a relevant composer with amazing music. The harmonic connection and melody were still important to him.
