Salastina's performance of Debussy's "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune," arranged for chamber ensemble by Benno Sachs (Schoenberg Verein). This performance took place on November 18th 2012 in Thayer Hall at the Colburn School and celebrated Debussy's 150th Anniversary.

Wow, I've been studying this arrangement and this performance in particular is especially well done! What is interesting to me is that of all the ensembles playing this on RU-vid yours is the only one I found without a conductor. One would think that with a piece as dynamic and variable as this that not having a conductor would make it harder but clearly this is not the case with you all. My theory is that without the conductor everyone has to learn to listen more closely and learn the whole piece and how their parts fit into the piece. So while I love & respect conductors, it seems like having a conductor for this piece may be more distracting than helpful? Nice job!

Thank you for the kind words; we'd like to think that's exactly what's at work here! This is an approach we love taking with pieces that typically involve a conductor, like Copland's "Appalachian Spring" and Handel's "Messiah." - Maia
