Totally agree! That’s my first board few months ago. I sold it after 4 days. However this Carve540 helped me to decide whether i should invest more on this hobby. I end up replaced it with carver C7 and a yow S5 because of your previous videos.

I'm glad you Americans are finally starting to get Decathlon stores. There ain't many shops where you can walk in with the intention of buying a new water bottle and walk out with a surfskate, horse saddle and longbow.

I've had the Oxelo 540 for about a month. First entry into surfskate, after 10+ years of not even setting foot on a board (I used to do some downhill in my youth). I bought this one because of the cheaper price and availability. It didn't break the bank to get started. Decathlon also sells protective gear for very low prices. At first, I was struggling with the pumping and carving, mostly because of my lack of technique. After spending a month riding almost every day and watching Shane Lai's videos, I am enjoying the heck out of this board. I agree with you on the lack of concave and the small kicktail. Those are definitely its most notable downsides. Regarding the limited motion, I have to say, since I have never compared it to another system, I don't miss it. Remember that you get used to the set up that you start with. I watch a lot of RU-vid videos on surfskating, including your channel. I get a lot of FOMO when I watch other people rip on their Smoothstars and YOWs. Only a week ago, I almost pulled the trigger on the Meraki system and a Swiss deck, which would have run me 3 times the cost of the Oxelo. Now, I'm glad I didn't. The fact of the matter is that this set up is giving me so much enjoyment, despite its drawbacks, that I am not sure I will actually be that much happier if I spend 3x on another set up. I am working on improving my technique, which will help me get the most out of what I have. This is a great budget board. I recommend it for people who can't justify spending $200+ to have some fun or to work out. Nobody is fooling themselves that this board is the same as a Carver or YOW.

It’s actually a fun board to ride barefoot and over a decent distance like a cruiser. Fun after a surf in the car park. Yeah it’s not as good as most other surfskates but for the price it’s actually a good starter and fun without high expectations.

This was my first surfskate and I always recommend that you buy harder bushings at the same time. Decathlon sells longboard replacement ones - for a larger guy like you I'd recommend getting the orange ones. That fixed the hard stop issue for me. As a starter deck I have to disagree with you - I think it's a great intro. People who can afford it tend to recommend "save for a better one" but for many people, saving the extra money might mean a few months not ridding, possibly missing a whole summer of fun. And don't even get me started on the demand issue - it took me months to get a Yow. I have for little money modded this board by adding griptape, getting harder wheels (we disagree on that too) and drilling extra holes to shorten the wheelbase and I've been using it in bowls, where I actually prefer it to my Yow.

I agree. Great starter board. Got me into Surfskate and i later upgraded it with grip and waterborne adapters, but i still enjoy the original trucks on another deck. The small kicktail is the part bothering me the most, and the reason I'll end up upgrading the board too. Still totally worth the price to start Surfskate !

I'm not sure if we have different trucks that people are talking about, but for the the hard stop has nothing to do with bushings. It's metal hitting metal. Changing bushings would do nothing to stop it.

Like many people who haven't enough moolah to spend on boards, given many other things life has thrown at us, i decided that the 540 Bird gave the best value for money proposition to enter into Surf skating for my daughter and I. I bought one for her first, then tried to save $$ for myself by getting a Sector 9 longboard with the waterborne adaptors, nope didn't work for me as well as my daughter's 540 Bird. Then I tried a Duster drop-through with the same WB adaptors, nope, didn't work as well for me either. So I sold them all, got my money back. I tried to save to achieve the same feel as the the 540 Bird as a surf skater newbie. I couldn't. The 540 Bird, despite its limitations, was really comfortable and confidence-inspiring for me to learn and get good on. I'm 1.8m weighing 85kg, and it fit my physique well. I tried the Carver Courtney Sea Tiger w C7 trucks, it was so lovely but the price difference used was still more than double that of the 540 Bird. I didn't have the confidence to invest so much $$ at my skill level and in something that I wasn't sure if I'll stick on with as a sport. I settled for the 540 Bird and and am really enjoying it still after 9 months. I occasionally do about 8km of simple carving with no foot down throughout. Lovely! Mark the Landlocked Surfer was an inspiration who helped seal the deal for my purchase of a second 540 Bird for myself. I'm no expert, started skating/surf skating from zero only in August 2020 and with that low entry purchase was great especially after the previous unsuccessful unfulfilled try-outs, . It helped me get into this sport easily. I would recommend the 540 Bird to anyone who is tight on cash and deciding whether this would help him or her enjoy this new sport. For me, it sure did. Oh, and Decathlon has a 2 year warranty on their products. I don't know any other board who blatantly flaunts this! And mine had a bushing split within the first month, and it was an easy replacement- no questions asked. Thanks for doing a review. It allows people like us to also share our experiences at the same time.

I've got the Oxelo Carve 540 and it carves just fine - for me. After 25 years away from street skating - but not from surfing - this boar has been used alot just to get some slower - but very smooth turns in. No wiggling. Hate wiggling on a skater..... Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.:) Just SMOOTH pretty hard street carving and surf related movement. I train on this when the surf is flat here in Oz and it keeps me sane, fit and retains my surf movement related muscle memory, pretty well. Appreciate the pro review though. Cheers! 🤙

I bought this & I was not disappointed, it suits my needs , during lockdown I got back into longboards after a very long time & I was looking for something a little different just to get me moving.To be honest, so far I’ve used it far more than I thought I would, I simply couldn’t afford to spend three times that amount on something I wasn’t sure of . It is what it is & I’m now thinking of eventually building a board.it’s definitely got me into surf skate.let’s be honest it has its limitations, but for the money that’s okay & for the moment I’m okay skating within those limits too.

it was my first surfskate too as i wanted to see if i would like to get into it without spending a bomb. since then, I've gotten a smoothstar and i don't ride the 540 much anymore, but i keep it for nostalgia sake. in other RU-vid videos, someone has changed the front bushing to a double cone configuration to try to get more movement out of the truck limitation. overall, i will say if you have no other boards lying around and you can't get your hands on any boards to try first, it's not a bad first choice.

I’m a novice in surfskating - can pump for an hour without any breaks and make medium tight turns. I cannot say if it’s a good surfskate or not - I come from the snowboarding background (I think this helps a bit) and treat surfskate as a good exercise waiting for the winter season. I really like this board because at my 85 kg it is stable but still allows me to pump easily. My friends have these Smoothstars, Yows, Carvers, they mod them and do some advanced tricks and what not and the only board that I actually prefer to my Oxelo is a Carver with some hard trucks (C7 or CX, can’t recall). Smoothstar Mantaray or Toledo are easier to pump but I can easily block the front wheels unintentionally when I push too much and get thrown over the handlebars. This never happened to me on the Oxelo, maybe thanks to this block. I understand how you appreciate more advanced gear once you get better (as a comparison to snowboarding gear). Again, this opinion comes from a novice surfskater (who’s more into something between the surfskating and cruising) and a pretty advanced snowboarder (mostly carving and jumping).

You convinced me to buy one of these as my first surfskate, i received it just this morning. I think you should recommend it, but under stipulation ofcourse. I think the board is sold best to people who want to cruise, not to people who want go down the bowl or those who are looking to practice their surfing on land. This board trades some mobility for speed, which is nice if you want to go cruising and be a little extra while doing it. I bought this board as something separate from my cruiser setup, but the 540 is just going to be my new cruiser setup, even if its just for striding and riding its a superior setup to what i been using. It is a pretty good board for a pretty good price, so calling it cheap doesn't do it justice. It also makes for a good buddy board when you still end up buying a superior product, and having it around for spare parts is like never having an excuse not to go out and ride. As some who has been surfskating for a total of 240 minutes, i think you are wrong.

I agree with what you say, but for me its like a surfboard in a quiver... it has value as its a transition board not quite surfskate but not a cruiser - something that I would pick to cruise and cover distance and that actually carves. I like boards that are all different in personality and this one even though it has a flat deck still puts a smile on my face - the wheels are not gummy but just hard enough to lose enough traction when you pump the thing hard. Try a drop knee and grab a rail either front side or backside and the trucks will naturally make the turn without having to monitor your weight or technique instead of turning in on themselves and stalling like my yow (120 euro)truck plate. So that slower limited truck for me actually is not bad. Maybe from a surfskate view it is not a perfect board but it is certainly has $129(99Euro for me) worth of fun wrapped in it. I have come across the type of boards your talking about - usually given as cheap birthday/christmas presents to be ridden on the day and then shelved till the next garage sale... from my experience and some of the other youtube reviews I don't think the carve540 is one of them.

@@vznquest yeah actually I would... in carving it actually makes you work harder and this could be a good thing as it will force you to improve your technique and it is much more stable at speed. If your objective is surfskate then better to test a few specific surfskates and compare.

I bought this board second hand but hardly used for half price. I removed the spacers. Moved the front truck back the truck length then cut the nose short. Removed that stupid back spong and applied proper grip. Got a 17.5" wheelbase snappy board that is easy to both pump and push, cuts sharp and snappy and slides like butter (occasionally slip while pumping but not too bad) It's not my every day board but it's a fun ride

I have owned this board for over 1 month now, and its my first one. At first, I felt like its impossible to pump, since the wheelbase is too long (distance from truck to truck is 58cm), and Im only 5'5". I gotta drill 2 more holes in the back to shorten the wheelbase, now I find it pretty decent in term of turning and pumping. I agree with you on the the downside of the deck, very slippery, no concave, and the tail is too narrow.

Hi there! I would not say that is the best surfskate on The market, but is actually a very good one... I've tried many of them (Yow, Carver....) and for that amount of money you get a very decent surfskate... If you change the bushings by puting on harder one (orange from Decathlon), the board become very responsive, it is great to ride Long distances or even in a bowl...what I actually miss is the higher tail... Sorry for being directly, but I think that the problem you have, is the low price of the board...

I bought this board after watching the review linked below, and it doesn't have the 'hard stop' as referred to in your video. My board has a concave (similar to review below) it's not flat as the board in your video , I'm starting to think maybe Decathlon sent you the wrong board..? My Oxelo 540 board has exceeded my expectations and I really like it tbh. It's been great for a beginner like me and I find that if you loosen the trucks it turns / carves much better and it's really fast compared to other surfskates I've tried. I'm able to generate good speeds even uphill. I'm approx 160 lbs so I guess heavier riders would need harder bushings to avoid any 'hard stops'. Note: You can adjust the wheelbase approx 1.8 inches from short to long. I use the default medium (in-between) setting. If I'd only used the board for flat ground surfskate training then I would have used the short setting, but since there's some hills in the area I live then I prefer the medium setting to get it a bit more stable if that makes sense. I haven't tried the long setting. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bqgCDFTxBBc.html

@@SurfskateLove YEs I tried several boards/trucks in the beginning and it was very hard for me to decide. After a bit of testing i found the easiest one for me was carver board w/ reversed kingpin trucks. So the plan was to buy the carver but then I saw the review of the Oxelo 540 and decided to try it. I'm a sceptic so i actually kept the board in the plastic wrapping and tested it inside a long-ish hallway in case I had to return it if that makes sense. If you'd said to me 'here's a carver and here's an oxelo540, which one do you want?' then i'd go for a carver any day, i do believe that a brand like carver have better quality products and a better (stricter) quality control.

I bought this after I got a YOW, and one of the more expensive ones, I'm super new to skateboarding but knew I wanted to keep this hobby so I got a really good YOW. But being new, I wanted to practice some tricks which would trash my YOW more than it already is, so I got the 540 as a practice board for fun to kick around and "smash", and having tired it still being somewhat new, it's pretty much worth the price tag, I think. I mean it's obvious from the type of trucks. But it'll let one decide whether or not surfskate is even for them and a good starter since you're not gonna be pumping so well at the start. Becomes a good hand-me-down or a buddy board. More so for brand new skaters. Compared to the YOW it's a little more stable so it's more noob friendly in that sense too for some. I think there's a place in the market for this board.

Hi ! Great review, I bought one about 3 weeks ago, found it great to discover this way if skating. First of all like said in an earlier comment I think that you should have loosen the front truck and lubed it a bit, I did that and no more squeaking/cracking + much more flow and fluidity. I think that in France they've launched a new model because I don't have the extra holes for front truck and (as I can remember) I have a slight concave on the board. Imo I would recommend it if you are unsure of wanting to put too much on a surfskate/to see if you like that ride. In French Decathlon you can return a product if you are not satisfied so it's a win/win. But I think that I will keep mine and lend it to friends that want to try or to ride with me ! Keep up the good work, your videos are really well made and helpful ! Cheers

so i bought (and returned) the board because of that hard stop issue that you mentioned, lol. now i'm looking at slide. like you i'm tall at 6'2 - do you think i could get by with the 32" Diamond Kaena or better go for the 35" Neme Pro model? i want to practice surfing when not surfing (aka want to rip into turns/carves). but also lots of cruising. wondering if the longer board/wheel base would suit tall people like us better, or if it would be too stiff? thx and cheers!

I have had a few experiments with revenge trucks my most successful revenge truck front, matching gullwing on high raiser plate rear - if you want to learn to surf and squat / work to carve it is great training but even the carve540 puts you closer to a surfskate feel and it's just easier.

I had to buy one because my 3 year old boy made damage on it in the store. So I thought better use it. I am a 40 year oud beginner. And I don't know any about it. But I learned 2 things. 1. That board showed me that's surf skating is al lot of fun. 2. And I buy next time a better board. Because the wood is flying off the deck. But first I destroy this one. Because I really suck at it. 🤣

Just set up my old Koastal longboard with a Yow V4 adapter, Krux trucks with Ace bushings and some Tarantula tunnels. Pretty fun trick. But my main thought is this is fun to ride but expensive for a board thats actually less versatile then a normal skateboard.

Great review, this was my first board. Unfortunately back then there were no good reviews like yours. I had to change the wheels, the grip was gone after a month, so I had to buy a new one. After that I bought the Waterborne adapter and used the trucks of my longboard. I also do not recommend this board, is hard to pump and the deck is horrible. But amazingly the trucks work really good on a longboard.

@Fogbrush
@Fogbrush 3 года назад
As an alternative low cost surfskate - Supersports in Thailand stocks two basic bushing surfskates - 5,900 and 7,500 complete, including a skate tool. Mega Bangna branch has stock. I've just put the same type of Chinese CX trucks on an old deck, and it works well. Also- Supersports are now advertising Yow boards, they say they will have stock soon. Hopefully the entry of a big sports retailer into the Thai market will stop all the profiteering by unofficial resellers. Also - just buy a deck and order some Geele or Rare Ant CX trucks and bolt them on. I got mine from Lazada for 1,200 THB including the bolts, and just bolted them on to an old deck. Decent wheels and bearings are low cost too - so a complete board would be around 4000 THB.

My biggest issue with Slide is their decks. I don't like either the Swallow Wahine or the Neme Pro decks. The Neme Pro is too narrow for my preference. It doesn't have a solid tail rocker like I prefer. And it is also very flat. But rides very well and I like it a lot. I can ride it very easily in a bowl. It's really great for lond distance cruising. Like perfect for longboarders who want a longer board they feel comfortable on but that can pump and carve very well.
