I think my favorite part about your channel is that you talk about books I’ve never heard of, so kudos to you for getting out of the slump and going back to what you gravitate too! (:
It's silly but for whatever reason, I don't read some of the books I'm excited about to keep them for later... as if I'll run out of books to look forward to! Plus seeing everyone excited about certain books makes me want to read them but I have to realize I don't have the same taste as some others :s
Emily, you always have the best hauls. I love that you don't always go for the "most popular" books, but instead what you're personally into. I'm curious, how do you search/shop on bookoutlet? I always struggle to figure out the best way to search (aside from searching for a title in particular) because there are so many choices. Love your videos!
Thank you! It can be hard with the pressure on booktube but I want 2018 to really be all about books I'm interested in, not necessarily the hyped ones! Bookoutlet - Browse - Fiction - (product type) Bargain Books - (subject) Fantasy, Science-Fiction mostly - Sort by Arrival Desc That's pretty much that! I'll search specific books and authors too :)
Thanks for sharing! I know the whole "pressure of booktube" subject is going around right now, but the way I see it, if everyone read what was interesting to their own tastes and stayed true to themselves then we'd be able to more easily find our true "tribe!" ☺️
There are plenty of youtubers that read adult if you search. Just look up book reviews for books you like and you're bound to discover channel or two that way.
I absolutely love that you're taking a step back from contemporary YA because frankly I'm sick of hearing about the same book over and over again, and that is books I'm not even that interested in! I'm much more into fantasy and sci-fi but there aren't too many booktubers that talks about that genre. I think that is why you are one of my top booktubers to watch!
When you said that book was only 20 years old and you made that face I laughed. That's exactly how I feel when I find out I'm older than some things I thought were older than they were.
The strange and beautiful sorrows of Ava Lavender is one of my favorite books it was actually the book that got me into magical realism. Gabriel Garcia Marquez is amazing at writing magical realism 100 years Solitude and Love in the time of Cholera are great books
I love sci fi and I feel like I haven't read that many this year ("only" 29 (although some were more distopian than really sci fi) I'm hoping to read more next year!!
Been binge watching your vids and had to make a new playlist to later get all the books you mentioned. Please never stop making vids. Your vids are always the perfect fit for me since i also dislike contemporary, romance and LOVE sci fi, fantasy and thrilers
I'm currently reading The Knife of Never Letting Go and am really liking it so far. I'm really hoping to read more books in 2018. A few years ago I was going through a book every few days and am really hoping to get some of that reading inspiration back next year. :)
I just got finished with like my fifth reread of The Belgariad :) It's "comfort fantasy" to me. Basic plot and tropes, but I enjoy the characters and their journey.
I watched the movie years ago and I really liked it, I still haven't read the book and I don't know why! 😆 I was under the impression that M. Crichton's novels were difficult to read (English is not my mother tongue), because of the scientific vocabulary, but now I may give it a try 👍😊
BookswithEmilyFox thr movie is terrible, esp in comparison to the book. I read the book first and was SO excited for the movie, and it is dire. Such a shame!
Traitor's blade is hilarious. A little over the top for my taste, but certainly not bad. I am all in for a group of friends being friends and sticking together through perilous adventures. Oh, and a decently good plot twist! I also bought the Woman in Cabin 10!!! (Partly for me, mostly for my sister who loves a good thriller/ mind screw). Then I bought Fahrenheit 451, Stalking Jack the Ripper, The Gunslinger, and The Long Way to a Small Angry, Planet. I can't wait to get to all of them!!!
I also feel like 1997 is not 20 years ago lol. Anytime someone says "10 years ago" I automatically think of 1995ish lol. I love your book hauls and wrap ups! You pick books that genuinely interest you and you're so honest in your book reviews, instead of repeating what every booktuber says. Also, your makeup in this video is ridiculously perfect. Thanks for always uploading quality videos! :)
Joe Abercrombie is one of my favorites! His style is very gritty pretty violent, but also full of dark humor and unexpected twists and turns. I hope you enjoy his work!
Jonathan Safran Foer is one of my favorite authors, his books are the greatest ever!! I prefered Everything Is Illuminated; I need to reread Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close! Have good reads! xx
Michael Cry-ton I read the Belagariad series last year and loved it. It's a great epic fantasy series about the chosen one trope. There are companion novels and a sequel series. The Seven Realms is awesome and there's a sequel series that starts with Flamecaster! My favorite haul video today! As far as sci-fi goes, I've heard amazing things about The Expanse series.
I always add so many books to my list after watching your hauls. I LOVED the First Law trilogy - absolutely brilliant 👌 I just ordered The Book of the New Sun vol 1 (cos of you!), the second in the Shadow Memory and Thorn series by Tad Williams, and Battle Mage by Stephen Aryan.
Ah the demon cycle series! I can't wait for you to start reading that, it's one of my top adult fantasy series of all time! I'm in the middle of a re-read of the skull throne because I can't remember what happened and I bought the new 5th book the core and can't get to it until I refresh my memory. So excited to hear your thoughts
I'm excited for you to be going back to scifi and fantasy too! :) I'm also very ready for the new year because I've kind of flopped with my reading goals for this year now that it's December lol
Agreed. That book is amazing. Book three however makes me wanna quit the series. That was so pointless and that clifhanger I don't really care for... It might just be me though. I didn't like what happened with Arlen's character in that book. And that it feels like romance/erotica for huge parts of the book.
I have a close up in this video at 0:56 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E26xzTmpc3s.html It's a glitter cut crease! (THe products are listed in the description box of that video too :)
I have noticed that my taste in books have definitely changed over the year. I just don’t think I can do ya contemporary any more. Read the Diviners when it first came out and really loved it, need to finish that series. I tried to start Falling Kingdoms but didn’t really gel with the writing
If you need another Sci-Fi recommendation, I loved the Imperial Radch, by Ann Leckie. The last book Ancillary Mercy is a 5 stars for me. (And I don't give 5 stars too often.) I'm also about to pick up the 4th book in the Greatcoats series (Traitor's Blade is the first, Tyrant's Throne is my next read!), and the series is really good. A "18 to read in 2018" list might be what I do for goals next year too. For 2017, I set myself some loose goals ("Read 3 series", "Reread 3 books", etc.) and it worked great, but I was looking for something else to do and it might be a great way to go. Can't wait to see what's on your list. (On mine so far: Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, His Dark Materials and The Cemetery of Forgotten Books)
Your going to love the Tearling series. And for those who don't like the 3rd book, I did agree with them at first but after thinking about it, the ending made sense.
Ha, I just bought Timeline today! I've wanted to get into Michael Crichton after reading Jurassic Park and The Lost World a few weeks ago. I bought couple more of his books a couple weeks ago. Hope to read them soon! I also bought the Broken Empire trilogy by Mark Lawrence. I've heard it's pretty dark, but if I like it I want to try the Red Queen's War series too. And those Stephen King editions are great. Even though they are mass market paperbacks, they're flexible and floppy. If I buy mass market copies of his books, I want those editions. This is a great haul and I can't wait to hear your thoughts when you read them!
BookswithEmilyFox Haha I definitely agree, have you read Salem’s Lot yet? I remember you hauling it. I really enjoyed that one :) Something about Dark Tower puts me off but not sure why!
i'm so excited for you to talk about some of these! Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is written very interestingly, Ava lavender is interesting as well, particularly the first generations in the book, and the Falling Kingdoms series honestly gets better with each book, i wouldn't go into the first book expecting the most. I know you already plan to but i really recommend continuing the grisha trilogy
Been slowly getting into a huge slump because of all the booktube YA recs I've been reading, and your videos are like that one thread that's keeping me afloat =)) I miss reading adult sci-fi, and you just motivated me to drop all the YA for now and go back to what I love
Christine is so good! I still have my fingers crossed that you’ll pick The Dark Tower back up. At least to the second book! Isaac Asimov wrote one of my favorite short stories. It’s called The Ugly Little Boy, and it’s part of the collection called Robot Dreams. It’s so beautiful.
I haven’t always been a big fantasy person but watching your channel has made me want to read more fantasy - I bought Warbreaker and it’s one of the first in my list for 2018, if I can wait that long!
You should have seen the first book cover for The Diviners! It was so intriguing. I'm kind of mad they changed the covers. Anyways, you're hauls are always awesome to watch bc they're true to who you are and i always find myself adding books to my tbr
Yeah I usually stay away from ya books too but I'll read anything by Diana Wynne Jones. Her best know series are probably Howl's Moving Castle and Chrestomanci, she's also got adult books too, all fantasy
I love the Chrestomanci series! It was one of my favorites as a kid and I found used copies of both volumes a month or so ago. I've never read anything else by the author, but I'll have to look them up at some point.
I've had The Painted Man on my bookshelf for about 6 months since my boyfriend leant it to me, he loved that series, just need to get myself in the mood to read it!
The Falling Kingdoms is such a good guilty pleasure series. :-) It's not high quality, not gonna lie...!! But it's fun. :P There are some novellas out for that series, that's probably what you're thinking of. Yaaaaaaaayyyyy Seven Realms!! Yeah there's just 4 in that series, but then the Shattered Realms series comes (timeline-wise) after those 4, but it's in the same world. :-D SO MANY AWESOME FANTASY BOOKS! :D
I absolutely loved The Queen of the Tearling series, i think it's similar yet so different from the other ya series, since it doesnt have those ya cliches that i've come to hate like love triangles or just the cliche love plot. I also LOVE the falling kingdoms series, BUT i hated the first book, i think i gave it a 2 stars, but i assure u it gets better and better and i love the rest of the books so much
Hi. I'm new to your channel and I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video. You got some great new books and one can't have enough sci-fi in their collections, right? Lol. Look forward to your reviews on these ✌️
Lol. I've got currently 36 novels in my TBR list and that does not include the 3 that I have on the go at the moment ha. Going to be a busy start to 2018 for both of us O think ☺
I'm glad you picked up Falling Kingdoms. Can't wait to hear your opinion. I was in love with this series but I'm currently rereading them as audiobooks and they feel a bit lacking in some ways I couldn't see before. But you should definitely read the second series it is so much better and so interesting!
I didn't like Ava Lavender at all, but if you want a similar book and concept that I think executed everything so much better you should try Above Us Only Sky by Michele Young-Stone! I also don't tend to like magical realism but it was one of my favorite books of this year! :)
I've been struggling through a Mark Lawrence book for my book club for the past semester, and I wish I could say I was enjoying the book; it's Red Sister, which is part of his newer series (which would make me think it's better than his older works). I know he's an internationally best-selling author, but I'm really not sure how. Also your makeup looks absolutely amazing!!!
Wow Emily. 👍🏻 Good job on the book haul. Also you do own the first book of the “Red queens war” trilogy by Mark Lawrence which is the ‘Prince of fools’. Now you just have to get the second book in that trilogy which is ‘The Liars key’. So yayyyy👏🏻🙌🏻
My opinion on Tearling trilogy: 1st book - OK, 2nd book - meh, 3rd - better than 2nd but the ending was just terrible. This series has such a potential but it was wasted. But still much better that Red Queen series. I am looking forward your review of Falling Kingdoms.
Awesome haul Emily! 🤗 Always enjoy your videos 🙌🏽👏🏽speaking of fantasy have you read the Song of ice and fire game of thrones series?? It is amazing I flew through them could not put them down. I watched the show 1st & was able to read all the books after knowing all the characters mentioned since there are a lot lol.
Have you read Radiant by Catherine Valente? It's a colonies in space kind of book, but it's also an alternate history where we were traveling in space by the 20's. It has a huge scifi plot and is really unusual and interesting. I find myself remembering it often.
