Thanks to lockdown I have the time to write this. This is me (Miguel Gutierrez, on the right) and my friend Howie Rigberg (on the left) doing my choreography - I called it "Aerobicon" - way back in 2000/2001. It was the first in a series of duets I made over that year called "tandemonium." Howie and I had been in a band together for years in the late 90s called Princess and when that band ended Howie went on to do his music project My Robot Friend. We originally performed this dance at The Performance Garage (where The Wooster Group does their stuff) in the summer of 2000. Writer Laurie Weeks , who had just interviewed Kathleen Hanna for Index Magazine, saw it and told Kathleen about it. Kathleen called me up and asked me if we would perform it at their CMJ show that fall and of course I said yes. We did it there and LeTigre loved it (the rehearsal on the day of the show was actually the first time they saw it) so they decided to film it. It was shot in the attic of Kathleen Hanna and Adam Horowitz's (aka Ad-Rock of The Beastie Boys) house on Spring Street in Manhattan. I thought they were just going to play it during their shows and that would be that. We did end up performing it with them again at least one other time that I can remember at the Bowery Ballroom. Le Tigre put the video on their website and that was cool. Then whoever "iamthewalrus" is posted it on RU-vid without crediting me or my friend Howie and it went "viral." (In the early aughts a couple million views seemed viral, but I know it ain't Cardi B viral). At one point I wrote iamthewalrus a dm on RU-vid and said, Hey can you please credit me? But I never heard back. Also at some point a few years later I was with my friend Julie Kim, who had also been in Princess, and she said, Hey let's watch that video together it's been a while, and that was when I saw that tons of people had made copycat videos, which blew me away. I was, and continue to be, really happy that so many people got into it. I just think it's hilarious that it's my most "successful" dance that no one realizes I made. (This is one of my biggest pet peeves about all music videos posted on RU-vid - they rarely name the choreographer and no one thinks to ask.) You can see us performing it as part of tandemonium in 2001 on my Vimeo channel - vimeo.com/164729875. Oh and one last thing for whoever gives AF. Whoever edited the video got the sync wrong starting at around 1:08 with the tongue stuff and from there to the end of the song the dance is one beat ahead of the song. So on top of the fact that so many folks have learned the dance, they've learned it wrong lol. Or maybe it's just queering the queer dance. xx
Thank you so much for this cool insight/backstory. I remember when I was 5 or 6 years old seeing this for the first time. It was just a funny video my best friend's family and mine enjoyed and appreciated. Here I am 14 years later, 19 going on 20 soon. It baffles me what has happened between the creation/upload of this video on here and now. I just happened to think of this video and suddenly that summer/year just flooded back to me. Thank you for being such a fun staple of my childhood internet experience. As cheesy as it is to say, it almost makes me emotional watching this and seeing your comment. I didn't know something so seemingly niche back in the early 2000s would become a sentimental aspect and reflection on my life so far. Thanks dude, and keep being cool, this video is eternal.
Back when I started using RU-vid in 2007 there was only 240p. I think 144p is still relatively recent. They probably implemented it for people with low internet speeds
This song is just *power*. The simple, fuzzy four chords backing the song is just perfectly LOUD, and the lead singer just full-on, unrestrictedly *BLASTS* the entire song at the top of her lungs. It's just the most powerful song I've heard.
Waffles Pancakes Hell no. If you are part of that subculture that unnecessarily is against anything 'feminism' then I'm assuming you're some kind of degenerate that sucks up anything 'anti-feminist.' There's no excuse since the song comes before Tumblrism. Hint: The ad is likely the one featuring Gorillaz. That alone speaks for itself.
+Ren5 It just kind of bothers me considering that eventually the movement would metamorphosize into such a meaningless cause Anyways, this sounds worse on headphones; my first time listening was on phone speakers. Voice doesn't pierce through the guitar well enough and it sounds whiny imo, but that could be because of a bad mix
Isabella Vaissieres I'm studying to be a lawyer. I just want to put on a suit and tie, go to court acting all serious and then... DO THIS DANCE! :D \o/ *dancing weirdly*
At my Freshman camp (I dont know how does it call in English sry) we had to learn a very similar dance:D It's a kind of tradition at my school when you're a Freshman.
I just can't seem to stop watching this... ...it's somewhat mesmerizing *adds learning the dance to Le Tigre's Deceptacon to her list of things to do before she dies* 0.0
This was one of the best videos on RU-vid back in the day. I remember my friends and I trying to follow along with this dance back in middle school lol 😂 I’m so glad I found it.
Omg I remember finding this back in early 2000s with my friend in high-school photography...jezus that was 15 yrs ago....crazy how I remembered this lol
I can't stop listening to it! It's so freakin' amazing!!! It seems superficial at first but really listen to it and you'll see that it's a beautiful song, and very melodic too. That's what I like about electronic music. Ain't it wonderful? Thumbs up if you agree!
Ahhh, the good old days. I’m 6 years old. At my grans house, the kitchen. My grandpa, who sat at the table with the tv above him, decided to play this. I danced along with these two, well tried. The good old days before Covid-19 ruined all that. The memories.
@@DanielMori7 yeah! My grandpa usually listens to hippie music and rebel music for some reason. He thinks that pop music these days is a bunch of old shit. 🤷♀️🤣
absolutely chuffed my 12 yr/o daughter has discovered this gem. walked through the front door at the end of last week and heard the faint chimes of this up the hallway. i welcomed the dogs joy of my return and knocked on her bedroom door. She was ecstatic with glee and saying how cool this song was. She asked if i've heard it before... i haven't told her full story but my lil' one has an ear for good and proper music. ill give all credit to my wife for her kickass personality loaded with wit and temperament but this one is all mine.
the french are one of the coolest culture people..their movies and songs, art, fashion. if u say american,uk, and french people, its coolness. any part of the world will know.
Happy 18th anniversary to the music video being released on January 24, 2006 on RU-vid! The video’s now old enough to vote and have sex in the US and Canada. LOL 😂 I missed the anniversary but at least I paid homage. This is a gem, I’m glad I discovered this song on Halloween 2023. 🎶❤️ I think the video might be older than 18 years if the song came out in 1999. Could it? Is it? 🤨
Years ago I found (can't remember where...) a version of this song with Reggie's "My body is ready" sampled on top of this. I'll pay money to find it again.
i write mostly mid 90's Norwegian style black metal..... and still to this day the only vocals i can emulate dead on perfect is Le Tigra... very well written
When I listen to this song.. it reminds me of the 90s or 80s.. or it just feels like the old days are happening right now.. it also makes me feel like I’m in dreamcore or weirdcore.. I don’t know why..
oh my god, i'm a uni student and i found this about 2 weeks ago. It's now a regular at pre drinks...like this if you think this should appear at more uni pre-drink sessions!!! TUNE!!
Former uni student here (had to dropout the week before this comment was made due to poor grades) and I listened to this song for the first time on the late night of Halloween 2023 thanks to a great superhero TV show named “Invincible”. This song is *AMAZING!* Only flaw I think it has is that it should’ve been longer.
After that Gorillaz Pandora ad i went on a journey to find out what the song was... glad to say after a weeks worth of sitting and searching i was not disappointed one bit....FUCKYEAH
Believe me: This dance is extremely difficult if you have less or no physical activity at all. I almost broke a leg while trying to imitate them, lmao.
Dude, I just did the dance for the first time at the hour of 3:00 PM on April 13th, 2024 after finally having an opportunity to be alone and MAN! It was tiring! 😫 When people said that this dance video was physically draining if you got no exercise, I thought I’d be sweating a lot. 😓 But nah, I somehow didn’t sweat much. My lanky ass just had a hard time keeping up and was huffing and puffing because it’s been a while since I last exercised. I’d say it’s a pretty fun cardio workout. The choreography was hard to follow. I internally said “What the fuck?” in my mind as I tried my best to follow the dancers. I made a mistake by trying to follow both at the same time since they sometimes had different movements in the video. But it was *AWESOME!* I gotta try this again sometime before I turn 21. I’m definitely gonna try this dance and upload it on RU-vid. Even though I don’t have a friend who can dance to this song with me on camera. Some parts were complex, so I’m gonna have to practice before shooting the video on RU-vid to continue the tradition. But screw it! I’ll follow the choreography of the dancer on the right. It’s awesome that this video and fire song started a tradition where people follow the choreography. For months, I’ve seen multiple people dance to this video and sing along to this song over the years. Most were uploaded in the mid to late 2000’s. How did I find this in late 2023 and not as a kid? 🤨 Thank you for uploading this video! And thank you, Le Tigre for making this song!
Uma vez eu tomei 3 cervejas e dancei essa coreografia inteira pra um boy na intenção de mostrar pra ele o quanto eu era talentosa. Sinceramente, eu acho que vivi muito bem meus 18 anos kkkk
For some reason I like this music video (if it is even a music video) much better than most of the popular music videos of today... and popular music videos probably cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce at times. I also don't like watching dancing. Yea I just contradicted myself. Kind of.
Each time I heard this song, I'm wondering how they came out with this idea. I mean, it got personality no ones denying that ! A true overdose of aimless lyrics and I kinda love it. Surprisingly. ~Peace~ xoxo
everyday i get a random video recommended to me that is not related to anything i watch and i get amazed with an absolute ✨MASTERPIECE✨, THIS is one of the masterpieces
oh my god! this song had been in my head for like ten years and i could never remember where i heard it. things only got worse when i say the "my body is ready" video. Thanks!
I loved this song since I first heard back in middle school in the late 90's/early 2000's. Then I saw it in the movie Better Luck Tomorrow and I was reminded of how much I loved it.
