One major difference between Smotrich and Bennett is that Smotrich wants the job. Bennett always saw himself as above being the leader of the dati leumi community and always had his eyes on a higher goal. Smotrich on the other hand sees being the dati leuimi leader as his lifelong ambition.
I'm not sure it was pointed out in this way. Ben Gvir accomplished what Bennett was trying to do in spreading the party to other sectors. Many in thr DL community felt they needed to show their more liberal side to spread their base. What happend in reality was the opposite, it was accomplished by leaning into the hard line element. What the liberals failed to do with thr "first israel" conservatives are succeeding in doing with the "second israel".
