What if we did a complete inventory of everything in our house? And what if we also put each item into a category of how much value it ADDS to our life (or how much it sucks life from us!)...I think this might help us declutter faster and with more purpose!

I learn so well from you! It's been almost 3 months since we purged over 40%, put 20% into "Quarantine" (which NOBODY has missed!) and I now have such a useable "work environment" (aka my kitchen) and the freedom I am experiencing by how little time it takes to clean is such a gift...THANK YOU!!

LOL. My husband was listening to this while I was watching and he said he probably has 300,000 items just in our garage. And I think he's right. My only comment, "that's a lot of inventory to manage". I've gotten rid of a lot in my house, probably 60-70% over the past few years of decluttering. I don't bring a lot in. And I still have a lot to manage, so it's time for another round of decluttering.

Wow! I needed this video. My sister works for an ins company & if your house burns down they have you inventory everything you lost in the fire. I can't imagine writing down 300,000 items. Also, the other morning (about 3 a.m.) I couldn't sleep & I thought if I only had 1 hour to grab everything that meant the most to me what would I grab? That was very eye opening to me also. I was amazed at what popped into my mind. It wasn't much of anything. Then I thought I should get rid of everything else. Thank you Dawn for making these thought provoking videos. ;0)

I have to say, I did a pantry declutter and reorganization and every item that went back in my pantry got written down on an inventory sheet (with expiration date) . It really helped having to write every single thing down because it made me think twice about how much I really wanted to keep some things. It took a while to do it all but it was so worth it. The phrase "inventory you have to manage" really came to the forefront while doing that.

When I decluttered my clothes 3 yrs ago, I decided to inventory them after. This way, if I want to purchase something, I make sure I either really want it or if I think I need/want something in a certain category. Also, whenever I wear something, if I don’t like it anymore, I get rid of it right away, instead of waiting. I need to declutter shoes though, I keep thinking I’ll wear certain pairs & never wear them! Lol I use to buy a lot of makeup & skin care. I have an inventory of that because I did overspend...I’m really doing well now & not buying until I am using the last product of that category. It’s unreal how much I kept buying because of a sale or just really wanted something. I’ve made better choices over the past few years. My problem is other areas of the house that I need to declutter & get rid of. I can manage a few areas of things, while other things it’s chaotic! I just need to do it in other areas of my home! Lol

I moved to a new house a month ago. I threw half my old house away but there is a room off the garage and i took every box in there off the moving truck. I only brought in stuff i use and love. I love this house now. It so easy to clean and maintain. Im going through the old stuff now and getting rid of it. I dont miss any of that stuff!!

I’ve been on my minimalist journey for 7 years now I would say, and there is probably still at least 30% of my things that I wouldn’t be sad to see “spontaneously combust”. I guess that’s my sign to go further 😅

LOL! on keeping the bundt cake pan! Reminds me of when I donated our springform pan for making cheesecake. I still feel guilty about it, AND I'm so glad I did it anyway. I never once wanted to make a cheesecake in the last 20 years, and now I tend to avoid desserts. I think it is funny that I can feel so relieved and so guilty at the same time.

I used the protein powder in my mug cakes 🤣 Smoothies for summer ,keto mug cakes for winter.. Our house echoes now . This is Katrina on my husband's tablet he prefers my iPad. He didn't mind me decluttering my stuff but said no to his stuff.🙄 Took me while to realise this ,ha ha. He loves how easy it is to pick up the whole house. My break through was on a bad day it takes 10 minutes to wash the dishes, just get and do it. Great video .

I have been following you a little over a year. In that time I have gotten rid of about 70 percent of our JUNK! I do not miss one item. The last thing I need to minimize is our attic. We have been fostering for 7 years and I have saved alot of stuff from kids that we have had. It has been the hardest to get rid of. But I know the items do not hold the memories.

For kid stuff, I like to take pictures of the items and throw them into Evernote tagged with their initials. Nothing fancy...just a quick photo with my phone. Then toss the items. When I see the child again, we have fun looking at their old crafts via my phone or computer without the joy of dust allergies joining the fun.

Isn't it ironic that the things we find hardest to let go of are the things we actually need and use the least? But once we let go, it's so rewarding. Relief comes with each layer. The majority of what I own is fantasy self stuff. I have started letting go of sentimental and someday items. I don't regret anything I've decluttered. I don't even remember it unless I see it in a photo. I would say 90% - 95% of my inventory (not my husband's stuff) can go and I won't miss it. I wish I could do it in one day, but I know I have to do the work. Physically. Mentally. Emotionally. Spiritually. I have to declutter all the junk in those areas too for it to stick. Thanks for another inspiring video. I love putting items into this perspective of store inventory and breaking it down into the six categories. I think it will help me as I continue decluttering.

This is great! I made one very small inventory list for our shared storage in ground floor of our apt building (7 items) and I loved it. Decluttered and storage no longer accessible so no more list! I never thought of doing a list for each category of my belongings.. wow. I think that is tremendous bc categories and lists with numbers is a great way to help my brain feel organized on paper and let go of more items that I no longer use but kinda hanging onto bc they are nice, memories, might wear/use.. I have the space.. but then less space for anything new that might better support my life now. Thank you!

Over the last few years i have decluttered so much. So many car loads of stuff have left my house, and yet it never feels emptier. I can't even imagine how i had that much more here when it still feels over stuffed. I agree on keeping the bundt pan. Other 20/20 things i've gotten rid of and repurchased are a waffle iron and blender.

I agree with most items to follow the 20$ 20 minute rule. That said, the quality of products today is HORRIBLE that you may need to replace. When you are older, ;) you have learned most of these de-clutter rules. Appliances are a good example. So glad I have my 35 year old Maytag set. I know many who bought new 2 to 3x now because of breakdowns and Cheap quality. Clothing is another good example. I built my "Classic" Closet Wardrobe in 2 sizes -20 plus years ago. So glad I did! Those basic Black Slacks are still in style and Never wear out. The poorly made yuk fabric today is why it is Cheap & easily replaceable. I just fill in with Thrifted trend tops now. If I buy 3 new - 3 Old need to go. I love your Videos, I have been binge watching for a couple weeks now. You're great inspiration! I naturally like to purge, but sometimes you just put it off. Got my kitchen done this weekend. PROMO cups GONE!! LOL..

This is a new favorite of all your videos, Dawn! I'm eager to use your printable in hopes that seeing things in writing will help me pull the trigger on getting rid of more. One of my biggest issues is feeling like I should be selling stuff, but not taking time to try. I keep trying to be mindful of all the things I want to do with the freedom that will come, much of which I'm getting a taste of, thanks to all your (and your partners') other videos. Lol my kids make fun of me because I have a list of what is in my freezer hanging in the side. I feel I don't have to open the freezer and stand there deciding what I want to take out for supper. I also have a list of my additional stock items that are in the basement. As I rotate the items I can also see what I need to purchase to restock.

Gorgo, I don't know that I have tips. It is just a continuous process. If I take meat or what I have listed out I cross it off. If it's my last item of that or I see it's low it goes on my next grocery list immediately. There are certainly times I miss things but I just routinely go over it again to keep up.
@fryefoto

Gorgo, your comment made me think. Maybe instead of a written list you could create a semipermanent list with magnets. When you have an item in the freezer place a magnet with the item written on it on one side of the freezer. Move the magnet to the other side when you remove the item. Some advertising magnets are easy to cut up and cover with labels. Hope this makes sense and helps! 😀

The spontaneous combustion idea is brilliant! Also, glad to see you branching out with your Bundt cake recipes! During last year's lockdown, I tweaked your chocolate cake recipe and made lemon, and even a lemon blueberry that was perfect at Easter! There are lots of cake recipes online that can be adapted... I made homemade butter cream for the piped frosting, then sprinkled grated lemon peel across the top! Thanks for getting us back to using my vintage Bundt pan... it's a keeper!

As I’m watching this video, I have 7 garbage bags filled that I purged in the last two days. These are the ones to be donated, not counting the ones with actual garbage! Good thing I label everything! I like the idea of ‘someday, sentimental, fantasy self’, that is eye opening as to the things I still can purge. Personally I am amazed at the amount of stuff I pulled out already, and thinking about the stuff I actually left behind that easily could fall into these categories. I am ready to put them in my car, but might take another pass through to see what else I can find. Thanks for this inspiration.

Thank you for your videos! I actually experienced "spontaneous combustion"...well sort of....I lost about 75% of my possessions in a storm that caused 2 trees to land on my house. It was so something that changed how I saw stuff for a long time. Sadly, I have allowed stuff to creep back in. In the past 2 years, I lost both of my parents. Now I am on a quest to clean out and clean up.

I think between 30 to 50%. When I first divorced I moved with just the bare minimum. It was such a feeling of peace. I bought a new set of 3 pans and it was enough. Now that my old stuff has come to live in my house again I feel the emotional weight of it every day. We used to keep & move boxes upon boxes of books. Ughh! But one day our basement flooded & most were ruined. I felt sad having to throw them away but it was a huge relief to no longer store them. Your channel came to me at the most perfect time. 🙌🙌

I moved 3 months ago. In that time, we have unboxed everything that we need for daily life. I purposely left in the boxes anything that was not needed by someone in the house over this period. My basement has A LOT of boxes that NO ONE has gone into to find something particular. Guess where I am going next for purging! I cringe at just how much there is, but I am also ready to lighten our load. Just to think...we moved it, and now I am going to get rid of it. Arrrg! But better late than never!
