Decluttering Challenges: How to Let Go of Expensive Things

Several people have mentioned to me that they struggle with getting rid of items that they know they don't use, but they can't bring themselves to part with the items because they were expensive. This is an incredibly pervasive problem, and I'll bet just about all of us who have started our decluttering journeys have faced this at some point.
In this video, I share a bit about what's happening psychologically when we experience this (thanks to what I've learned from listening to a lot of NPR), and include some tips on how to overcome it.
**No, I am not getting rid of my Vitamix, which I use all the time. I just used it as a thumbnail because it's one of the few expensive things remaining in my home.

This video really helped me. I have a box filled with expensive purses that were gifted to me ranging from 16 to 27 years ago. I absolutely loved them at the time and used them daily for many, many years. But now they’ve been replaced by more modern purses. I kept them because I thought I would sell them on eBay or at a consignment store. I never did it; they are still in that box. I’ve moved that box to 6 new houses (twice cross country!) And last week when I looked at that box, it seemed like a lot of work for what is now a dwindling return~as they’ve gotten older they’re worth less and less. Today, I finally decided that it will be OK to let them go. This video gently reminded me of what I’ve known all along: They take up valuable space in my small office, I know I don’t really have time for eBay, and they aren’t valuable to me today because I don’t use them. I just needed your sweet, simple logic to flip the switch. They're leaving the house! My husband will be thrilled! Thank you. 😘

That's wonderful! I'm glad the video helped! If you aren't interested in or don't have time to try to sell them (I totally understand, I rarely sell anything), you can always donate them to a women's shelter or a charity shop whose profits go to causes align with your values. As others have pointed out in the comments, sometimes knowing they're going towards a good cause can make it easier to let them go.

I also just let go to a foster charity...a whole bag (60) Ty bears that I had carted around both Canada and the U.S. for years. Wanted to make cute little candy gift baskets with them. Funny how it feels no different now that they're gone!

I struggled with a huge, expensive tailor made bookshelf a few months ago. Since we got rid of 90% of our books, that piece of furniture was totally useless, though it was quite beautiful. We could finally sell it and recover part of the money spent. What a relief! There was a "burden" in my living room, every time I stared at that bookshelf I got kind of unhappy. No regrets at all!

Selling the item if it's in good nick is also a good idea to make you feel like you're not just throwing money in the toilet. If you have something you never use such as a a kitchen item or toiletry, it can also be down to other reasons such as accessibility of the item. Make a commitment to leave the item in an easy to access place for a week and force yourself to use it a couple of times. At the end of the week you will either fall back in love with the item and use it more frequently, or have a renewed sense of the reason that you stopped using it in the first place (kitchen equipment hard to clean, lotion too greasy etc.). I find this can help make it easier to let things go knowing I have given them a second chance beforehand. Love your videos! So calming :)
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 6 лет назад
That's potentially a good idea for some things, though, to be honest, I fall more in the camp of "If I haven't used it for a long time and forgot I had it, why allow myself to fall back in love with it," but I've probably done that myself too at some point without realizing it. If it helps to solidify the decision, and especially if it helps to prevent future mistakes (e.g. "Did I like that lotion? I can't remember, so I'll buy it again."), then it could be very handy!

Your videos are always so inspirational! You told me to read Goodbye, Things and so I did, and some parts of the book really stuck with me. I had a random epiphany today that was as simple as this: Material possessions will never make you feel complete. Experiences will.
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 6 лет назад
That's wonderful!! I'm so glad you read it!! I found the author to be a bit too self-deprecating at times, but the advice was still good, and I find it useful to scan the list of his tips at the end every so often as a refresher. You are 100% right about experiences being far more valuable than material possessions. They don't even compare.

Something that has helped me is putting more thought into where I donate things. I like to donate to worthy causes, and I also used to view donations as just a way to unload things. But as I moved along to the things that were harder to get rid of, I started really thinking of it as a donation to a worthy cause rather than "unloading." Rather than stuffing a bag into a donation bin, I took gowns I had hung onto way too long (because expensive) to a charity that helps inner city girls get prom (or whatever) dresses. I felt so much better about it than if I had stuffed my old gowns in a bin somewhere. Long story short, putting a little more thought into where something was going allowed me to feel better about getting rid of it, and gain the good feelings of making an actually valuable donation.
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 6 лет назад
Absolutely! I am a big advocate for finding causes where your donated items will have the biggest impact. It can take slightly more research, but it's worth it in the end. For high-ticket items (handbags, accessories), there may also be charity auctions for local schools or non-profits that can accept the items as well. Someone else gets to buy and enjoy the item, the non-profit gets some much needed cash, and you get to know your contribution went to something worthwhile!

I’ve been trying to declutter for years and have watched dozens of videos and bought self help books (oh dear!). I’ve come to realise that I’m not letting go of all the excess ‘stuff’ I have because of the amount of money invested in useless-to-me items over the years. It’s easy to let go off the cheap stuff, which I have done, so your video explaining Sunk Cost Fallacy is very interesting. I can now go in a different direction. Hard, frustrating work ahead, but I’ll get there! I’m retired so I’m planning a fun ‘business’ selling it 😅🤞 and as the money is already gone, anything I recoup is a bonus! Thank you.

Thank you for this video, I think the universe is trying to tell me something! I am just starting to get my head around perhaps having a more minimal lifestyle and already plan to do the 30 day challenge once ex has moved his stuff out (I've just got divorced and a major life change is on the cards TMI? not sure but gives some context) but anyways I have some expensive items (bags and clothes) and this has really given me some thoughts about how to treat those items when it comes to weather I decide to keep them or not. Thank you x
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 6 лет назад
There is no such thing as TMI on this channel! Sorry you're going through a divorce, but it sounds like you're (hopefully) doing ok and are ready for the next chapter. Obviously I love the 30 day minimalism game. Do it. It will give you a whole new perspective. And, of course, if you use the expensive bags and clothes, by all means keep them, but, if you aren't... you know what to do. I've seen so many people on youtube post handbag collection videos featuring some super dated but expensive bags that they never seem to let go of, probably because they cost a fortune to begin with.

Hello and thank you for your tips! I always look forward your post! I am not the expert but from financial stand point, even very expensive items depreciate too! Also if we think of our own house as a warehouse or storage, you are basically paying "rent" (inventory cost or fee) for unessasary things by storing them. Now I wanna go declutter and clean up...!
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 6 лет назад
You're completely right! Anything we buy deprecates dramatically the second we walk out of the store, and, of course they typically only continue to deprecate with time. I thought about talking about deprecation in this video, but it was already sort of long, so I cut it out. And, if we kept only the things we actually use, we could live in much smaller spaces, which means smaller houses, which are less expensive. There have been heat map studies done that show how little of our houses we actually use, so, if we weren't paying for all of that space to house things we don't use, we'd save a lot of money!

such an interesting topic! and one i've been struggling with for sure, but one thing that i found works for me is to mentally switch the price between the bad expensive purchase with a great cheap one. works especially if you bought those two items roughly at the same time. the total cost for those two items will remain, but i pretend the item i don’t use was the cheap one and that makes it a lot easier to part with. :) and if it's in good condition you can always sell it and get some money back - maybe even more than the new mental price!

Great video! I have decided to donate even the expensive items that don't add value because selling them takes too long and I still constantly think about them. When are they going to sell and they are staring at me and still taking up space. . I try to temporarily put them in the basement and say that I will use them and even make myself use them once but then never again to justify keeping them longer. It's tiring. Sorry, run on sentence and paragraph. Trying to get my thoughts out!

thank you for this kind of explanation - i am quite generous most of the time but i do feel that pinch at times letting go of an expensive item that i hardly used - this year - 2021 - during this lockdown - i have started to simplify and declutter since Feb and u are right - someone else will make use and benefit - we have a facebook page in prague - called free stuff in prague and we can post things there and people will pick it up if they going to use it and people also ask for stuff there so we can keep an eye and give away items - - sorry for the long message but its explained so well - thank you again!

I enjoyed hearing your thoughts and agree. : ) It really helps me to remember that as soon as I donate something I’m not using often I can add the rest of the value I paid for it to another person. Maybe even more value as they will get it from a thrift store at a lower price they can afford plus bless the charity. No loss but good gain in donating. 🤗

Boy I sure have this problem. I was able to give away a lot of my decorative items but there is one large picture that I used to have in my living room that I haven't been able to bring myself to donate because it was quite expensive. I keep thinking I'm going to sell it. But that hasn't happened. Meanwhile the picture has been leaning against the wall in my guest bedroom and every time I go in there I look at it and stress out about what I'm going to do with it. After watching your video, I think it's time to just 'let it go' and not worry about trying to sell it!
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 6 лет назад
The original money is gone, but there's nothing wrong with selling it to help take the sting out of the loss and give yourself a little assurance that it's going to a good home (i.e. someone who is willing to pay for it is likely to appreciate it)... just make sure you actually do it. If you decide to sell it, I recommend giving yourself a deadline. If you reach that deadline and you haven't gotten around to posting it or it hasn't sold, then find another way to get rid of it. Best of luck! (Also, not trying to talk you back into selling it, just throwing out an idea.)

Thank God bed bath and beyond accepted my return for a $200 juicer that I used twice in 6 months 😅 my husband wanted it and was convinced we’d eventually use it more. I'm in exactly the same camp! I mean, I made up that example price, but I bought a $40 off craigslist a long time ago and I used it for a few weeks, but it was such a nightmare to clean that it, well, ended up in the pantry. We kept the Vitamix for the same reasons as you--it's easy to clean AND you keep all the fiber from whatever you blend!

Ugh, uncomfortable (physically or otherwise) clothing is the worst! I don't actually advocate dressing for other people, but, if you want to, you could always ask your husband what in particular he likes about the sweater, and then look for those qualities in other garments that you actually feel good in.

This is such a good topic to think about and to discuss. I think it even goes further than what you mentioned. The ‘thought’ of someone getting something of mine from a thrift store for ‘free’ when I paid big bucks for it or “but it’s rare” thoughts. If I, myself found an item at an op shop and it was/is “super rare”. A part of my brain tries to justify keeping it. After all, I can’t apply the 20/20 rule to it. It IS rare, it IS cool, I DO like it but I do NOT use it. I just keep it.....and keep it and keep it. With some kind of strange ‘worry’ attached. I call these “my last hold outs”. I have decluttered SOOOOOO much and I have these final items that I just feel like I would regret decluttering INSTEAD of selling. Yet I don’t sell them?? Where is my logic? Why am I doing this. I think ultimately it is selfishness and worry that I might regret it. I could go on and on about this topic! It is especially hard for the items I DID think long and hard about buying. I DID save up for them but they didn’t work out (my feet grew with pregnancy even though I had already had 6 children. They grew after my seventh). I wanted that ‘rare’ Tupperware (real Tupperware).....the struggle!!! The worry about regretting decluttering!!!
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 6 лет назад
There are certainly many areas where frugality and collecting and minimalism intersect and cause friction, so I can't address all of it here, but you're right, it's an interesting topic. 1) Regarding someone acquiring something you paid a lot of money for at a thrift store for "free": Well, it's not actually free, but, more importantly, if you have useful items to donate, it's worth doing a bit of research to find a place where that donation can do the most good. Schools, retirement homes, animal shelters, and (human) shelters can be great options, and, when we donate to these places, it can take some of the sting out of the loss of money because the item will be put to further use by people who really need it. 2) Re: the "super rare": Rare doesn't necessarily correlate to monetary value. Things only have monetary value if someone is willing to buy them; just because supply is low doesn't imply that there is necessarily demand, so if you're keeping rare items because you believe them to have re-sell value, it may not be true. (Side note: helium is one of the rarest elements on earth, and we fill birthday balloons with it.) Another thing to consider is that we don't need to own things in order to show that we appreciate them. In the book "Goodbye, Things," the author notes that we don't need to be collectors, our homes aren't museums, and we can appreciate things out in the world without needing to possess them. Finally, some of your issue seems like it could be sentimental. If you haven't seen my video on decluttering sentimental items, it might be worth checking out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iD3D80lf9CM.html I hope some of that helps!
@kafo9263
@kafo9263 6 лет назад
Vested Interests Since watching your video I have made a list of items that I feel I ‘cannot but want to’ get rid of. This has helped me get it out of my brain and think that ultimately I WILL get rid of these items. I get so annoyed with myself as I have donated and sold SO much yet I feel I ‘must’ sell these things. It’s madness
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 6 лет назад
Making a list is a great way to externalize those ideas and get you one step closer to meeting your goals, so that's wonderful! And there's nothing wrong with wanting to sell things and get back some of the money you paid for them, so don't be so hard on yourself! One final thing I want to throw out there: If you're worried about getting rid of something, pretend for a moment that you do get rid of it, and then follow that train of thought to its worst possible scenario. If any of those "worst case scenarios" were to occur, would your life be meaningfully impacted? Are those scenarios more or less stressful than what you're feeling now?

This is great. Thank you. i used to have a fairly expensive wardrobe. I have allot of quirky expensive shoes and skirts. Four years after I had them shipped to my new house in another continent and a life where these now don't suit I can't bare to get rid of them. In a different country they don't have the shop they came from therefore have no idea of the value even of some with the tags still on. I still have guilt for the few I got rid of. Lol I gasped at the Dutch oven too! It made me think I should drag mine out!!!!
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 6 лет назад
I never used the dutch oven! Well, technically I think we used it once or twice, but it was so heavy that it was difficult to clean, so we tucked it away in the cabinet and never looked at it again. Re: the current value of your items: I 100% understand the desire to recoup some of the money that you originally spent, but this can be difficult as items tend to depreciate in value rapidly. You can try to search for the item online to give you a sense of the price you might be able to re-sell it for. If, however, you're now in a country where the clothing brand is unknown, it might be difficult to sell them because that brand doesn't hold sway in your new location. Value is extremely perceptual and definitely relative. My recommendation: if you can easily recoup some of the cost, great, but if you can't sell the items in a reasonable amount of time, they're just costing you more time and stress.
@agnesmurr2064
@agnesmurr2064 6 лет назад
Getting rid of clothes is hard as (I assume) I hate people seeing me in "all the same stuff". Behind that excuse lies an ocean of laziness... because I don't like thinking creatively about the things I have and keep wearing the same combinations all over again. Thanks for an inspiring video.
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 6 лет назад
I have a recent video where I talk about why I gravitate towards classic, basic pieces, which might be interesting to you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Lcdzglzq0Pw.html One of the many reasons I love them is that they're tasteful without being flashy. You get to look good without drawing too much attention to your clothing, a benefit of which is that people are far less likely to notice if you wear the same thing over and over again. Some very fashionable people have even adopted personal uniforms--Karl Lagerfeld and Michael Kors come to mind--and I bet no one gives them grief about it. And if people do notice that you wear the same items with more frequency, what of it? I struggle to think of something that someone could say or do to me to change the way I dress, and I have a youtube channel about clothes; I get rude comments from strangers online all the time! (But never once in real life. In real life, I'm often complimented for how I dress.) Finally, if you think people will be concerned if you wear the same items, stop for a moment and try to remember what the people you interacted with today were wearing. I just got home from work, and I can only remember one person's outfit, and she was wearing a bright, printed dress with neon shoes so it was particularly memorable. Everyone else? I couldn't tell you. Anyway, I'll stop babbling. If you don't like to think about clothing, a small or uniform wardrobe might be a great fit for you, and you can free up your mental energy to put towards the things you actually do care about!

Hello and thank you for your videos. i am a new subscriber. Would you consider making videos on the following subjects: how has minimalism improved your life, has it "spilled" into other areas (such as cooking routines, exercise), personal insights/observations/etc, minimalism and family (extended family and friends that is), your routines (cleaning/food prep/etc), resolving spouse/partner's differing views on minimalism from yours and...so you've de-cluttered and ...then what/to what end/what's the point of it all for you? Thank you. Truly enjoy your succinct videos!
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 6 лет назад
I have notes to myself to eventually make videos on a few of the topics that you mentioned, i.e. minimalism and food and living with non-minimalists. To perhaps more directly address what I've done "after" and the point of it for me: 1) I have a video on my minimalism goals and what I want it to help me achieve in my home, which has implications for my entire life (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FmcoA0vPgo4.html); 2) The overall goal for me has been to remove clutter so I have more time for the important things in life, and I have noticed recently (after my last 30 day minimalism game) that I am more focused at work, I spend more time with my husband, and both he and I have started making plans to do the things that are important to us (travel, saving, career goals). Goals are always personal, so mine may look different than yours, but minimalism can definitely give anyone more focus to achieve them.

Great video. Question - how do you determine if you should get rid of something you use VERY rarely. For example, I have a steamer that I purchased (fairly inexpensive maybe $20), but only use it maybe every other year (maybe once a year) to steam my curtains. I’ve tried to use for my clothes, but instead I switched to buying clothes that when I clean them, they don’t need to be steamed. Also, I have a roster. I purchased for Thanksgiving for the Turkey. I only use for Thanksgiving. But more than that, I don’t even use every Thanksgiving because I may not need to cook every Thanksgiving, so instead, I only need it every 2 or 3 years for Thanksgiving. I does provide use, but only every few years. Again, not an expensive purchase, but does take up space in my home. I have several of these items that bother me to have, but I hold onto them thinking I know I need them every “x” amount of time. What are your suggestions?
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 6 лет назад
Ha! I was going to suggest roughly the same things! 1) The 20/20 rule! If you can acquire it within 20 minutes of your house for less than 20 dollars, get rid rid of it and buy it again if you find that you need it again. As NecroSSanity said, you may find that you don't actually need those things again in the future, or you may be able to use other items (like the steam setting on an iron) that can do the job just as well. 2) You can often and pretty easily find things like steamers and roasters on craigslist, so if you know you'll need to steam your curtains or cook for Thanksgiving, you can find one locally and re-post or donate it back as soon as you're done using it.

Thank you all for your thoughtful replies. I think I’m going to put my items in “purgatory” for a period of time (out of sight) and decide if I really need them after all. If I don’t use them or can find alternatives than I will donate them. I have done this before with great luck, but these few items (those I mentioned here a few others, have been hold outs because of the reasons I mentioned.). I’m hoping during this time, I’ll find substitute items so I can let them go. I’ve come so far on my minimalism journey, I only have a few of these hold out type products.
@VestedInterests

Great idea! If you can prove to yourself that you can make do without them (while still having them on hand as backup), it will be a lot easier to let them go. Best of luck, and congrats on all the progress you've made!

How do we let go of expensive or antique items that we have inherited because our parents or grandparents passed away. These items have emotional value, but are not things that we use or need (I.e. Old typewriters, fancy vases, antique sewing machines, china, crystal, Hummils). I have tons of this stuff and can connect each item to a memory or story of a loved one. But, I am drowning in these things. I love your straightforward approach. Please help.

When I was finally ready to let go of a huge sentimental antique doll house and knew no one in the family wanted it I went to the trouble of selling it to the right person. It wasn't about the money, it was a lot more than that. It was worth the hastle to know that it ended up with a woman who collects doll houses and loves them dearly. Now when I think of it I am at peace with letting go.

Your loved ones didn’t buy those things with the idea that someday their descendants would inherit them. They bought them for utilitarian reasons. Would you like it if your future grandkids kept things out of obligation and felt unease and maybe some resentment for having to keep things they don’t really need, use or like? I’m sure your parents and grandparents would urge you to pass the stuff along already, because it’s just stuff. Your memories are in your heart and keeping the material things around or not does not make you love them any more or less.

I have started the 'trail separation' method and it works wonders. Especially for more expensive items and then typically I try to sell them. I know it's not quite the topic of minimalism, although perhaps it could be, but I'd love to hear your take on setting budgets/saving money, etc.
@VestedInterests

I've actually recently taken up budgeting, but I haven't decided how I want to talk about it in a video. I'll keep thinking about it though! Matt D'Avila's videos are what inspired me to start budgeting, so, if you haven't already seen them, check them out!

Hey, welcome back. how was New York? How did the new packing arrangement work? Too much? Too little? Just right? During the big kitchen clean out a few months ago, I got rid of some "expensive" items. It helped to give them to friends, to see that they were--at least at that moment--excited to get them. (They were friends who asked for the items, so it wasn't just a wholesale unloading of stuff on others.) Making it a little more personal took away the sting of loss.
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 6 лет назад
Hey, stranger! Hope you're well! New York was great. Got to spend some time with new friends and catch up with old ones, and I loved being back in a place with good public transportation. The backpack performed beautifully--I'm learning to forgive it for being synthetic--and I think I packed the perfect amount of clothing for the six days I was away from home. I ended up hand washing some things in the hotel bathtub (totally free and very easy), which I think served as a good test run to prove to myself that I can do the same thing on my upcoming UK trip. Giving expensive things away, to family, friends, or charities definitely takes the sting out of it. Then the whole expense transforms from a loss into a gift or a donation. Did the wine corks survive the kitchen clear out? I know you love them, so I can see how something like this may not be appropriate if you don't want to potentially damage them, but I just thought of something like this that could be cool: makezine.com/projects/wine-cork-board/
@carolann811
@carolann811 6 лет назад
The corks did survive...:) So did the bottlecaps. Although I looked at a bag of those the other day and thought...what if? ;) I am well, thanks. Hope things are good with you and yours. Glad New York and the backpack worked out. My son went to Florida a couple weeks ago with friends, took only backpack, and they were equal parts shocked and amazed he would go for a week with just a single backpack.
@carolann811

And the cork projects look really interesting. We are actually in need of trivets in the kitchen. I may have to haul out the hot glue gun and see what I can come up with.

I have no problem myself with this area of decluttering as I love the feeling of letting go...but a close friend absolutely has this problem! What do you do when all of the points you mentioned have been acknowledged and tried and the person then stalls by wanting to SELL said expensive items to get some of that value back....And then of course they never get around to it. Arghhhh! (Thank you for your reply!....Love your delivery of these videos!)
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 5 лет назад
There's only so much we can suggest for our friends. Minimalism isn't for everyone, and, even though certain concepts about possessions seem so clear to many of us, that doesn't mean the rest of the world understands those things. Another way to consider this problem is to think about it from your position: why are you so invested in your friend getting rid of these things? Is this a "live and let live" moment, or does your friend really have a problem that is impacting their life in some meaningful way?

Well I need advice. I lost my pandora bracelet that was full of charms and I can’t stop thinking about it. What are your suggestions?
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 4 года назад
There's "I just returned from a 3 week vacation and I now can't find my Pandora bracelet" lost and then there's "I wore this yesterday, it has to be somewhere in my house" lost. If it's likely somewhere in your house, it can't just grow legs and walk away, so you'll find it eventually if you declutter your home and have fewer crannies in which little things can hide. Good luck finding your bracelet! I hope you do.

Oh man, I understand. Fine jewelry can be especially tough, since it seems like it shouldn't depreciate (it's like wearing money, right?) but it manages to still do so as soon as you walk out of the store. Fortunately, you can usually get at least some of your money back.

In some of my other videos, I share that I personally don't sell items often because my priority is to get them out of my house as quickly as possible. If it helps to soften the blow though, go for it! My only caution is that you give yourself a deadline, and, if the deadline passes and you haven't sold or even posted the item, find another way to let it go.
