I have been decluttering to downsize & move in a year or 2. I love to see other people do it helps motivate me. I do small sections so I don't get too overwhelmed. Its been over a year since I started more to go but progress has been made. Instead of waking up in dread of all the work to do I think about what I got done it feels so good. I will also never own this much stuff in my life again lol
I am a collector of blankets and throw blankets. They are all perfectly good and I keep buying and I must stop and purge. Must be a lot of security in collecting blankets, especially the plush ones.
I've recently seen people storing a matching sheet set inside one of the pillow cases of the set to keep it all together. Maybe that would work for you!
I recently threw out 3 shames, decided it is easier to wash pillowcases than the quilt shames. Also 2 fleece blankets that were getting old. I know exactly what I have left in my linen closet. BTW, you never need complete sets, coordinate colors are more interesting and is very pretty.
I have a decorative wood ladder in the corner of my living room that I use to hang/display quilts; even if you don't use them but want to keep them, you can still enjoy them.
To simplify my life, I’ve started washing bedding and putting it right back on the bed. I have extra sets if I need them in a pinch, but I don’t have to fold and put away and it forces me to deal with it right away. Also, I do the same with our towels, and I’ve pared down so I don’t have a lot of extras. Just makes the linen closet more manageable. I have a problem with throw blankets too!
I do that with our bedding, too. I switch to the flannel sheets in the winter but otherwise I just wash the same set we’re using and put them right back on. So why I was holding on to so many random sheets is beyond my comprehension 😂
I have an Afghan that my grandma crocheted. My mom has had it saved for so long and she gave it to me two years ago. I love it and it's so warm. I also have a small quilt (half twin size) that my grandmother made me when I was born, she made each of her grandkids a quilt. I have it sitting on the back of a chair.
The blue and red floral piece reminds me of a table covering. Another good use for sheet is as drop cloths for painting and messy things. Maybe even tablecloths. Personally I don't mind if things are mismatched. I like making pillowcases because they show personality
Tip for washing the soft fluffy blankets. Wash cold water only, no fabric softener and only cool air dry. Heat and fabric softener will ruin them. Im going to take pictures of my minky blanket hoard. You will feel so much better about your blanket hoard lol.
I live alone and must have 20 throw blankets. It’s an addiction. But I’m moving from a 1700 square-foot house to a 700 square-foot space. I’m gonna have to do some decluttering also.
Here’s a polite suggestion: Consider one of those gift wrap organizers that hangs on the back of a door. Then it’s easy access plus it’s not in the cupboard.
I decluttered my linen closet a few days ago. I was able to get rid of extra towels and a comforter. Once I started rearranging things I figured out a much better way to organize everything. Good luck on your decluttering journey! I’m right there with you doing my own. 🍀😊🐦
Great job! Your linen closet looks great! I probably have too many throw blankets also. I keep mine in two baskets and a storage ottoman, with one draped over a sofa. You’ve inspired me to do a sort of them to see if there are a few I can declutter. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for more power push. Linens are always a space sucker, I use the vaccume space bags for seasonal or heirloom linens. It keeps them fresh, and adds so much space. Thx and keep o truckin. ❤
I think I have some of those space bags around here somewhere. I wanted to vacuum seal the family afghans but who knows where I put them 🤣 but I do like that idea! Once I find them I’m going to try it out.
I am the keeper of family quilts and afghans. I have soo much. I am pretty much the only person left in my dads side and the only one who cares about grandmas afghans and quilts
Good work Jamie, I decluttered from Jul to Dec 2023. Best thing I’ve done in a long time. I try to do it once a year but due to health reasons hadn’t done it for a while. So I bit the bullet and got someone to come and do the physical side of things with me giving directions etc. so cathartic ❤❤
Jamie, u r one of the best decluttering you tubers out there! You bring humor and commentary that is ALOT more thorough than other RU-vidrs. So glad u decided to go online! I know you will be very successful.
You got this. No matter where you start one section at a time. When I did this a few years ago felt amazing and now a couple years later will find home matiness will improve and easier to keep lower inventory
I love your videos. It is so much realistic to how most people live. I also agree to keeping things made by loved ones. I have blankets made by my grandmother that I will never get rid of. A little suggestion I got from someone else that can help with the bulkyness of the blankets is to get some of those bags that you can suck the air out with the vacuum.
Thank you! When I was cleaning out my bedroom closet I found some of those vacuum bags that I had been using for my kids’ baby clothes way back when. I think I’ll give them a try with the heirloom blankets!
I live in southern Calif too and I'm a blanket person. Us living here probably shouldn't have so many blankets. I have light weight ones for summer time if I get a little chill as I lay to long on the couch and of course heavier ones for this time of the year. They make lounge blankets to cute
My husband’s work had us moving 10 times in eight years. Do you want to talk about incentive to downsize! Every time we moved more things did not move!
I have a tall laundry hamper and I keep all wrapping paper in it along with gift bags. One of the bags contain scissors, tape and gift tags. Makes it so easy. I have one for all my Christmas wrapping paper along with a bag with all supplies needed. I keeps these two hampers in the spare bedroom closet. We also have an older toy box in the family room where I keep all our blankets and afghans for cozy tv time
Came across your channel and decided to start at the beginning of your decluttering journey. Loving it so far. You give out an Erica Lucas honesty vibe. Love her channel. In your previous video you mentioned things getting worse before they can get better several times. Check out Dana K Whites no mess method. It has changed my house in the last 2 years. I’ve gotten rid of about 40% of the items in my house and I started at pretty much the same point you’re at.
I would put the crochet quilts that were made by the family that you really seem not to use and put those into the Ziploc airtight bags and put them in to a tubAnd then. That way they are safe They are kept clean And they don't take up room and your linen closet
A few people suggested the space saver bags and I had forgotten I already had some in my bedroom, so that worked out! I still need to keep them in the linen closet now that there’s plenty of room in there. I couldn’t possibly fit a single other tub in the garage 😅 not until we get to that declutter! Haha
