In today's video we are discussing why Decodable Readers are the gold standard when it comes to reading instruction. Decodable Readers are different from Leveled Readers in many ways. In this video, I walk you through the stark differences between decodable readers and leveled readers, highlighting how leveled readers often miss the mark on phonics and decoding, leading kids to guess words from pictures instead of actually reading them. Through stories from my own classroom and well-documented research, I share why I believe decodable readers are the key to unlocking reading success from kindergarten through second grade and how they are extremely beneficial for early reading instruction.
I dive into five big reasons why decodable readers are just better for teaching reading, including how they align with the science of reading and help build a solid foundation for fluent reading. I also tackle some of the common misconceptions about leveled readers and why they might not be as effective as we once thought.
Most importantly, I want to empower you with practical advice and resources. I've got 16 free decodable books ready for you to download, along with tips on choosing the right decodable texts that align with a structured literacy approach. It's all about making sure these books fit into a systematic scope and sequence that truly benefits our young readers.

Exactly! I teach Wilson Intensive to struggling readers. Intensive phonics is a firm foundation for every child. It works like magic. I have seen the difference between those taught with a strong phonics program and those kids who learned using a wishy washy reading curriculum. No comparison.

Do you have a S+S for when heart words are taught? Thanks

Yes! The Structured Literacy with E.A.S.E. S+S has explicitly where heart words would be taught in each lesson.
