Hospital admissions in older people often lead to further deterioration: how is this possible? Came to hospital to get better but left hospital in much worse state despite best medical care. Some people become so weak that they even can not return home, and have to go to nursing home. Why is this happening and how to avoid heading to a nursing home after a hospital stay?
We discuss the condition called "Deconditioning" - generalised weakness due to loss of muscle power, strength and self-care abilities as a result of prolonged bed rest during hospital stay. Poor understanding of this condition and inadequate preparation for home discharge leads to the person failing at home: having another fall or neglecting themselves. As a result they get readmitted to hospital and get even more deconditioned.
In this video we discuss Deconditioning and give 5 tips on how to recognise and deal with it.
Watch this video, understand Deconditioning and help your parents or grandparents to recover from their hospital stays and continue independent living at home.
