In the past 50 years of the recording industry, few people have had as large an impact as Bob Clearmountain and Chris Lord-Alge. These two studio veterans have worked with everyone from Madonna and Bryan Adams to The Replacements and Sheryl Crow, all the while perfecting the blend of analog equipment and the latest digital gear.
On June 10, 2014, Clearmountain and Lord-Alge sat down with Mix Magazine editor Tom Kenny at Apogee Studios, and talked openly about their epic careers. From explaining their methods to speaking about the records they have worked on, the duo left no stone unturned, even taking questions from the audio. Here is the full video of Deconstructed: Chris Lord-Alge and Bob Clearmountain.

These two icons are like fire & water. Took me some time to get used to CLA's format, however I got through it, realizing his love for the craft, and his ability to express it in the loud extremes and bold statements, while backing the stuff up with what he does. BC is completely opposite, almost shy, calm & humble - but when he opens up, he seems like quite open guy with great sense of humour as well.

And paradoxically....a lot of engineers have awful mic technique. I’ve done enough Iive sound (the seventh pit of hell...) and witnessed enough speeches...you pick up patterns. If someone isn’t a regular live performer or particularly confident with the sound of their own voice, they hold the mic down by their belly button...at which point you might as well stop trying. By the time you gain it up enough to get a decent signal, it’s feeding nearly every frequency back at full blast.

I admire what both of these men have done and contributed to the music industry. Both their mixes are amazing and have set the bar (for myself personally) forever. You can't deny that CLA has done more than any of us will probably ever do. 1000+ records? Holy crap. I'm still trying to get to 25. The two guys who have inspired me personally the most are Clearmountain and Schepps. But, I think what you see here is the difference between the aged bachelor and a married man.

The good thing about CLA is that he knows that Bob Clearmountain is the POP MIXER LEGEND, he is the ultimate Mixer... and also CLA is a bit of a drama boy, he make this a bit more interesting and excitement... he portrait mixing as how would be in a TV series, lots of drama, pain, is so hard, su much suffereing, Clearmountain is way more relax and do not see it asa togh journey, do not try to scare people to make look himself as a badass mixing super hero/survivor

I'd jibe a lot better with Bob Clearmountain. He genuinely want to help the artist see their vision through. He's soft spoken, agreeable, his stuff is MAGNIFICENT! Dealing with super over-bearing, opinionated, DRAMATIC personalities get's in the way of the music, in my experience. I congratulate both of these men on their success and achievements. I'm sure for some CLA would be the right personality.

Love the masters talking, really enjoy it very much. But, offcourse we don't need to do hard work to make oldays fx with echoboy preset today. But point for today's mixing is the same experiment with new tools on another level....like they do with tape machines. Back in the day, as they say.: I clearly imagine some engineers in the 50s, that talking about technology the same... Oh, nowadays we have those tape machines, they make life so easy but "back in our days" we just have Edison's recorder🙂 So plugins just give us ability to go much deeper (if you think out the plugin box) and faster then before. It's only about creativity, don't be lazy and work 🙂

Chris wanted to be like Bob… Bob is like why? lol Chris loved em thats clear but Chris should also be more humble and let his work do the talking for him then he be more like Bob.. Bob is relaxed and laid back and does not have to prove himself and nor does Chris but for whatever reason he has this thing whereas he has to let you know that he is on a higher level simply because he has a desk… it was not the desk that made him successful it was his ability knowing how to use his desk! There is someone right now mixing in the box that will be responsible for the next batch of Musical Greats. Back in their day sure digital was kinda cold and nothing close to analog but in 2018…The game has changed… However the one concern is the longevity of the format. Tape as outdated and old as the tech is surrounding it..has stood and still stands the test of time. Yes there is a process of keeping Tape alive so its playable. Through baking and transfers you can preserve content. For folks that had many sessions on the ADAT format….that format is dead. If you have those tapes still you can play them sure but Alesis stop making Adats long ago.. and the same with Tascam D88s. Even the Mackie Harddisk recorders are a thing of the past. I do wonder if Radar units are still being sold. Who knows how long Pro Tools and Daws will be around? anyway….I just get so upset when I hear folks down play the new players of the game as if we don't have a chance because we don't have SSLs or Tape.

CLA seems to be playing up his persona a bit here. Whether it's as innocent as being nervous sharing the stage with Bob or trying to give some duality to stage, or as bad as trying to separate himself and his legacy from Bob's is unclear. Either way, as brash and unapologetic as CLA is, he seems to be a bit more so here and sharing the stage with Bob seems to be the catalyst for it.

Clearmountain's technique isn't bad, along with the moderator. But seriously, "3" from the mic" went out the window 20 years ago. My way of enforcing it is a quick push up of that fader, just until they bleed through both the house and the monitors. Don't care if they get offended: audio principles are audio principles. ;)
@robburgess4556
@robburgess4556 9 лет назад
As a live guy I would much rather them be closer to the mic than further. The moderator is driving me nuts, and probably drove the house guy nuts as well.
@Zickcermacity
@Zickcermacity 9 лет назад
Rob Burgess: Sorry, I know swallowing the mic is the modern thing, everything close miced, everything loud, in your face, all compressed, etc. but it's not proper technical practice and cannot be justified as "artistic". On top of all that, this 21st century sound is giving me a f***ing HEADACHE.
@robburgess4556
@robburgess4556 9 лет назад
My concern isn't artistic :-) In a room with speakers it's a pain in the ass when someone holds the mic at their crotch (like the moderator). If the people talking don't hold the mic near their mouths there is often nothing that can be done about it. Several times in this video the moderator can't be heard because he's holding the mic like he's waiting for Monica Lewinsky to take a "solo". It's a lot easier to roll off the low end than it is to rewrite the laws of physics. Talk into the mic or go home, you're wasting your time if no one can hear you.

He's most likely referring to Lord Alge's ego and the way his mixes sound, which many people find a turn off. He has indeed won Grammy awards, but really, we all know that we can't take those awards seriously. The music category is a joke by itself...

At least he doesn't make excuses. I'm sure if he went head-to-head against an engineer for a rock or alternative track, he would win with no excuses. So, Chris' brother (Tom) is about my age and Chris is older. I dunno by how much but, even if it's one year, 13yo and getting 50 dollars a week in 1975 would be like a 13yo in 2020 getting 240 bucks a week. Said kid would only be paying tax on 280 dollars of that income for the year. At 16, I was only getting 64 quid a month ... a little more than CLA's _weekly_ wage PER MONTH! Which of those was exploitation? Do fucking tell! CLA was on a fucking good pay deal back then!

If you dont have a neve desk or an ssl.... the really expensive stuff.... It wont sound the same. The only people that says you can do great mixes without expensive gear are the guys with the expensive gear. By the way Chris is alright.

+Peter Åhrberg So then save up and buy one unit with a class A mic pre, one small converter and a pair of good monitors. Treat the area around your desk and focus on the sound in the sweet spot. Also, make sure things are set up properly and do tests with the software available for testing your acoustics (or the lack thereof) and your set up. And all the while you are doing this, record artists. Demo singer songwriters, record your own music. Just record and learn your room and the frequencies and how every sound will effect the next. Once you've learned all that, you'll be able to go to a big studio, track through the big ol' heater and go home and mix a record that sounds like everyone else's.
