Probably my absolute favorite Monkees song - maybe second only to The Girl I Knew Somewhere as their best recorded ensemble song. Each is totally integral to the success of the song.
Brilliant deconstruct (as all of yours are)! Once again, Peter Tork shines as the best musician in the band. I’ve said this before in comments on your deconstructions, but “opening” up these songs allows us to hear things we never heard in the old, heavily compressed original vinyl releases. In this song, I’m really struck by Tork’s electric piano work (and his tasty (Hammond?) organ accents). Thank you again for doing this work for all of us ancient Monkees fans!
@cedarwaxwing3509 I agree on all counts!!! I always thought it was very big of Nez to say in his autobiography that Peter pretty much was responsible for Headquarters coming to life, especially since they were not particularly close 🤷♂️
I've got the upmost respect for Peter Tork as a musician especially after hearing these individual tracks from Headquarters! If only he had gotten the encouragement I believe he needed plus a willingness from all the guys to work together...guess personalities wouldn't allow it. Thank you for this great video!
One of the best tracks on Headquarters in my opinion. This deconstruct shows just how tasty the Monkees could be as musicians/vocalists. They really play to their strengths here. You can tell just how much this song meant to Peter.
Peter said he felt he should have sang lead on this song because it was right up his alley and I have to agree with him. He should have had the lead and Davy should have done the harmony and in that configuration would have been a brilliant blend. Peter did it a number of times live in later years if you’re curious what it might have sounded like but I don’t think it comes close to what might have been his ‘67 vocal. Regardless, a very groovy track. Another superb job Septyl. Well done!
