Why do people think you have to be a powerhouse vocalist to be able to sing? Variety is the spice of life. I wouldn't want to change anything about Janets voice. Smokey Robinson had one of the softest, smoothest voices in history (not to mention he's a male) and Rolling Stone named him one of the greatest Top 100 singers of all time. Janet is our generations Smokey.
Janet is my favorite vocalist. She has a unique voice and probably knows how to use her voice more than most people. I listen to her backgrounds and harmonies with goosebumps.
It's funny that she said that because in the Whitney movie, Whitney is praising Janet's Rhythm Nation and her mom goes on about how Janet can't sing. Cissy was just mad because her solo career was NON-EXISTENT. Upset because Aretha and Dionne made it big and she didn't. A career long background singer.
It’s interesting how we always want what each other have. Her statement makes me appreciate myself as an individual, and what I have to offer the best way I can. I love Janet❤️
@@michaeldalton2742 I just re-read you comment and realized that I misinterpreted it. I thought u were talking about the range she sang in. I think u were calling her a bitch.😀😀
God that part at the end... that kills me cos she has an incredible unique voice that no one else has and sometimes it brings me to tears how beautiful it is
Absolutely breathtaking vocals. Janet’s voice is truly beautiful. I wish people would be more receptive to what she can do with her voice. Those harmonies and backgrounds. That tone.
This is my favorite recording of Janet Jackson and the FlyteTyme Team 💯❣️I personally find this song song emotionally sophisticated with the gentle layers of her voice along with the textured melodic instrumental to create a timeless masterpiece ❣️💯
"What l can't do, I'll leave alone. What l can do l'll do better than anyone else." Janet Jackson, 1995. And Janet did just that, on stage as a performer no other female comes close! Period.
Couple of years later, this still punches me square in the gut, John. I spent almost 30 years listening to this song, hundreds of times, hanging on every word and string. And I've listened to your deconstruction dozens of times. And still, your deconstruction makes the song brand new again. And pulls my heart out of my chest at the end, literally tears if it catches me wrong, thinking about an artist with such a beautiful instrument who believes her voice is inferior or somehow not as good because its not the same as what conventional music culture taught her was appropriate for a diva. And that sentiment, her fear or anxiety being low on herself... whatever it was, it is literally and exactly why this song is so magical. Her performance is sincere, vulnerable, and emotional because she truly felt that way, performing this song. It doesn't get anymore real than that.
I love this song and feel the exact same way. When It came out and I was younger, I didn’t get it. Listening to this on decade gave me a total new appreciation for it and I’ve never let go ever since. If I could take only one song with me onto a deserted island this would be it: My absolute fav Janet song!
There are a couple of songs on "Rhythm Nation" that could have benefitted from a more stripped down production. This is definitely one of them. The acoustic in this song is so beautiful and could have carried it alone.
Absolutely beautiful and so insightful. Each and every time I hear her music it brings me back to certain parts of my life and the people that were in it at the time. Wow, 3 takes? So amazing, I love how you break down the music and share the history of the process. I am a huge fan.
Sweet! Someone turned me onto your doc series. Love hearing all these stripped mixes and isolated tracks with the interview clips. Very well put together!

These stems show the Genius of Jam & Lewis’s mix engineer Steve Hodge, listen to how flat they sound outside of his mix, he took J&L’s tracks to the next level, every time
.''..God dint give me 'what' ?''' Her voice is very elegant and pretty like Diana Ross, Karen Carpenter and Ella Fitzgerald. In the English language popular music, the p o w e r voices are the indisputably Dame Shirley Bassey, Celine Dion, Adele, and Whitney Houston. Soft Anne Murray is very nice, aswell.
Why am I crying??! Seriously, though. This is a masterpiece. I remember thinking that the first time I heard it. It seemed to just jump right out of the speakers that day & I am still in awe.
Does anyone know what instrument is being played during the bridge (it’s a solo string instrument)?!? I’ve been searching to know if it’s a bass or lead guitar? Or a muted or fretless bass?? Please help! If you know what it is!
What!!! Janet! As much as I loved Whitney's and all other powerhouse singers voices. You should have NEVER doubted your vocals skills! Just because you weren't vocal riffs and runs doesn't your voice didn't soul in it! As a matter of fact, You're one the most versitle vocalists that is slept on! You can dance your ass off and still deliver a powerful voice.
