We are taught that creation means building up. But, what if we could deconstruct something in order to learn and create? English Professor This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

With condolences to her students, the title of Dr. Hedgecock's talk should not be "Deconstruction Literary Theory" but "A Summary, Interpretation, and Life Lessons in Toni Morrison's Sula." Derrida did NOT say that language had "ABSOLUTELY no meaning." He argued that there is no meaning OUTSIDE OF THE TEXT. Listing dictionary definitions on stage is miles from Derrida. Dr. Hedgecock is still operating within the hermeneutical frame in that she is offering explanation/interpretation; she is using her (mis)understanding of deconstruction to offer an interpretation of some aspect of Morrison's book before turning back to Deconstruction, but here she replaces the idea and method of deconstruction to something she calls "Demystification." (This is where she really leave the trail that she was never on in the first place. Personally, I think she substituted "demystification" for "deconstruction" because she knew that she was well outside of her knowledge base when talking about the subject.) She then uses this personal idea to create a call to action (we should all do X more than Y). This is not Derridean at all. Derrida called hermeneutics (philosophies of meaning) into question. To be fair, maybe Dr. Hedgecock's talk had nothing to do with Derrida. Perhaps her mention of deconstruction was just a set up for her reading of Sula, but some ambitious uploader got all excited by the mention of Derrida. Hence, the title above. I am far from an expert on Derrida, but I do know that if you are watching this to learn more about deconstruction, you are doing yourself a big disservice. But I'll plug Dr. Victor Gijsbers work on the University of Leiden's RU-vid channel. Start with Chapter 4.1, The Hermeneutic Circle, and work up to Derrida.

@mjamesharding i do have a critical mind so i knew i could dig deeper. Left the struggles and stress for later and now that "later" has arrived. i do well digging up affairs of Kings and queen's of England, or the histories like Great Depression or even etymology of words. i am able to teach others a great deal about different subjects even if it's the first time i learn about them. All thanks to Lord who gave me a curious mind which always questions "why ? How ? When" etc. To some extent it also causes insomnia. Hoping curiosity won't kill this cat. 😂😂😂

Thanks for for the Dr. Gijsber reference. I'll check him out. As soon as I heard the dictionary definition, I knew something was afoot. No linguist, pragmatist, semiologist or otologist would suggest a one to one correspondence between a word's meaning and it's dictionary definition.

Yet how this applicable or useful for anything? Anyone can argue for a different interpretation of absolutely anything and anything goes. No objective truth can't be established for anyone aor anything, and instead, anyone is justified in saying and doing anything to you, and you're going to have to refrain from assuming intent and be okay with it. That is, if you truly believe that there is no 'true' meaning to begin with LOL

Her definition is wrong - this is terrible - Deconstruction has been misused as a word now for years and years - Simply -Deconstruction is looking at a text in a close reading and seeing where the content contradicts the intended meaning of said text - the text literally Deconstructs itself. "again- it is to take something apart and to understand internally how it actually works and how it operates and you can only understand that when you examine each component and begin to carefully put it back together". Nope. Derrida himself called this misunderstanding of his work "reconstruction" not Deconstruction. "...begin to carefully put it back together." - Derrida would cringe hearing this.
