Manuel Gottsching is probably the most underrated guitar player ever. All albums by him are my bliss. Krautrock at its best. And here he's a one man band and he keeps appealing.
Agreed, almost unknown in the guitarist world unfortunately. He was an inspiration to me in the late 70s (Blackouts era) before I ever picked up a guitar.
He was not "under-rated"! He was highly rated, deservedly so. Anyone familiar with the genre rated him at the top, as did Tangerine Dream's entire team.
He was not underrated but not as seen as other musicians in the US or the UK as he should have been seen. Ask somebody about Manuel? They don't know whether you're asking about a jeans manufacturer or probably the best electronic rock musician ever. I'm sorry Manuel, that's the way it goes nowadays. Manuel Götsching is the best in electronic music. My referral when I compose music. Listen to the private tapes. Those are my favourites. Ibiza goes down on E2-E4 anytime forty years after being released. And it still sounds new, modern and refreshing.
I just heard that Manuel is not among us anymore. News travels slow in the Alps. RIP Manuel Göttsching. Master of the Gibson SG, the keyboards, the FX and the sliders. Musicians have lost a great deal without you being around. Your music will continue to inspire me to no end.
My favourite musical memory was watching Manuel Gottsching and Lutz Ulbricht at the Roundhouse in London. They had driven from Berlin to play a live version of Manuel's new LP 'Inventions for Electric Guitar'. How I wish I could relive that night.
"New Age of Earth" by Ash Ra (from which album comes this track) is my favorite ambient album for the past 40+ years. I still play it regularly. Early Ash Ra Temple LPs are more trippy-hippy and not in this vein. But for 3-4 mid period LPs like this one, there was pure floating bliss. This is heaven when outside in the darkness.
I agree. For me the first three Ashra albums are my all time favorites. Ashra Tempel is sometimes a bit too much for me or too chaotic or whatever. Many good songs tho, but not as consistent as the first three Ashra albums. Manuel Göttsching's solo albums are also sooo damn amazing.. Dream & Desire especially is very dear to me.
Always better always worse, what’s worth is listening in to the intent, not so much the ego preceding. Your comment comes across uncaring and passive aggressive. Are you trying to level up yourself or someone else’s seemingly inadequate (to you) musical experiences? You hide well, speak your own truth, ideally without degrading another fellow humans’. Their life ain’t yours and if you’d like to introduce them to gems you’re luckily aware of do so, with respect and kindness.
Oh my. MG is all kinds of great. Like the best parts of Mahavishnu and Tangerine Dream, but with the rock-ness of Santana. Thanks to MG, and thanks for posting this. Mmmm.
If you like this music do yourself a favour and buy the Private Tapes from Manuel Göttsching. They're worth the money. Yes, they are expensive but if you still have a CD player you're in for a treat. DId you like Manuel and Ash Ra Tempel? You'll love those tapes. That's where this rendition comes from. The original was about 3 minutes. In the private tapes you get a fantastic 21 minute rendition which is even better than on this video. Please have the private tapes vol 1 to 6 released on Spotify and youtube.
lo comence a escuchar por ahi a principios de los 80s ( black out) y desde entonces siempre que lo escucho quedo hipnotizado por su musica, Dios los bendiga, saludos desde Leon, Gto, Mexico.
Absolute genius. Been a fan since hearing E2-E4 in 1984 then having to wait 2 months for the imported LP. Watched this just before lockdown and it finally inspired me to buy an electric guitar. Sequencer next.
Soberbia interpretación de una canción del álbum NEW AGE OF EARTH. Es mi disco preferido de Manuel Gottsching/Ashra y uno de los mejores de música cósmica. Descanse en Paz.
Krautrock pioneer, one man band and master of psychedelic guitar (and all things psyche electronica). He always struck me stylistically as the German Jerry Garcia (mixed with some David Gilmore, of course).
This music brings me happiness. I remember hearing this on the radio as teenager ~35 years ago. (WXPN in Phila, "Stars End") Thanks for the many years of beautiful music, Manuel!
Dear Manuel, you're a great musician and you're doing exactly the kind of music I love the most, the kind I wish I were doing it myself but, I don't have hands & brain like you, I would have been a lousy musician... That's why I became a lousy actor... Thank you again for your like on my actor's profile and I'm happy & proud to be friends! Long life and many many other albums & concerts! All the best from London!
I used the recorded version of deep distance in 1977 for my radio documentary on UFOs . it was used on three radio stations including Kcsb-fm at UCSB. This is the first I've heard this live version, and it is immense spectacular and leaves Us in space. It always made me feel like I was leaving planet earth and returning to my Celestial home, but it is even more than that and has soul, substance and God's love for lack of a better term--it's almost matter of fact and makes me cry but also has joy at the same time...I must thank him which I never did for using his music on that show so long ago! We are both getting old now I can't help but that makes me sad... Don't forget to use the Space bar!
Beaucoup d artiste de ce niveau sont partis Vangelis, Klaus Schulze, constance demby, est j en passe... J ai découvert ces musiciens il y a 30 ans ! Ils resterons une source d'inspiration pour moi. New age of the earth reste un de mes album préféré !
