When documentarians put together a film about Emperor Penguins, the most badass birds on earth, they knew they needed something extraordinary for this important movie to reach a mass audience. Then someone suggested they ask Morgan Freeman to narrate it. The rest is history. March of the Penguins was a record shattering success.

The know the comets are coming a year in advance but somehow everyone waits until the last day to go as far inland as possible! Also, price fixing doesn't work! Even enforcing a rationing system like WWII is extremely difficult to enforce! No matter what the president did there would still be chaos in the streets yet in this movie everyone seems very calm. Everyone would be playing 'GTA' for real because the only thing cops could do is lock you up for year awaiting trial and since everyone would be doing this the chances of being caught would be extremely low.

Hey, I'm in this one! It was an extra gig during my few years of trying to break into acting in Hollywood. Got a visible shot during the huge crowd scene at the caves. It was my 1 1/2 seconds of fame, LOL! (One of the most uncomfortable shoots I was involved in. The scene takes place in summer, so we had to dress light, but it was January so really cold. Terrible film but I got a nice close up for a few shots and got paid 100 bucks for 10 hours with maybe just 20 minutes of actual work in front of the camera and the rest just sitting around. My brother was an extra on 21 Jump Street from the 80s when he was 19. Perfect close up as well. Can't recall what he got paid but he did see a 16 year old Christina Applegate alone at a desk when he went to the wrong room. I love this movie. It's one of the few disaster movies where the disaster ACTUALLY happens and causes complete devastation. Most 'disaster' movies seem to have a disaster in the making only to have the protagonists save the day at the last minute. I also really like the realistic horror that goes with it. This movie is psychologically terrifying because this scenario could happen and how it plays out really does make you think.

In July of 1994, scientists observed the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collide with Jupiter. It was the first time that anyone directly observed a planet-comet collision. In the few years that followed, there was much talk and discussion about what would happen if something similar were to happen to the earth--and what steps could possibly be taken in such an event. Both Deep Impact and Armageddon were created in the few years after Shoemaker-Levy 9.

Size doesn't determine whether something is a comet or an asteroid. It's what they're made of. Asteroids are mostly rock and minerals. Comets are enormous balls of ice. That's why the sunlight caused so much disturbance on its surface - its heat was melting bits of it and causing them to turn to steam, breaking the surface and creating explosions. Since you guys like Elijah, you really have to check out "The Faculty". A great late 90's sci-fi horror dramedy. Insane flick!

This movie always gets compared to Armageddon because they came out in the same year or pretty close. It's ok to like both movies. What I do hate is when people talk about it being unrealistic that they drilled into the asteroid in Armageddon when they literally did the same thing in this movie 😒🤦🏻‍♀️ just enjoy them both for the great movies they are. I still personally love Armageddon more but that's my personal opinion and because I love Bruce Willis
@obelisk21
@obelisk21 3 месяца назад
I think the criticism of the drilling in Armageddon is because it featured an asteroid which is metal and rock and would be extremely difficult to drill into. This movie features a comet which is basically an ice ball with dust and rock which is much easier to drill.
@xzonia1
@xzonia1 3 месяца назад
@@obelisk21 Exactly. That is the crux of the criticism. You can drill through rock and metal, but it's so much harder to do successfully, and made people feel the movie was unrealistic for that reason (but it's not, technically). There are easier ways to get through rock and metal than drilling, but they needed a precise depth which meant they had to drill.

Oh and you did miss a few details - Chloe, Jenny Lerner's new stepmom is only a couple years older than her. When her and her mom were having drinks toward the beginning of the movie, they were discussing that fact (when the mom called her Chlorine) that Jenny has a stepmom who is now just a few years older than her. Jenny's mom took her own life. That was why she was dressing up and 'getting ready'. She knew she was excluded from the lottery and didn't want to wait for the comet (yes, it was a comet and not an asteroid - the difference is what they are made of. Asteroids are made of rock. Comets are made of rock, ice and gas which is seen by their tail in the sky).

The book Lucifer’s Hammer, which came out in the 70’s, is about a comet hitting the earth, and one of the greatest science fiction books ever written. It won both the Hugo (best fantasy) and the Nebula (best science fiction) awards, and pretty much every comet/asteroid hitting the earth movie, including Deep Impact, has been inspired by it. Firstly, this film was released more or less at the same time as ''Armageddon'' (1998) and was in competition with it. ''Armageddon'' won but this film, produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by a woman, was my favorite of the two. Robert Duvall and Morgan Freeman are the two pillars of the film. God aside, Morgan is just as believable as The President... The number of good actors and actresses starring in this film is stupendous. The reflection that the story brings is frightening. The thread of events is worthy of the greatest science-fiction suspense. In an ideal cinematographic world, I would have made a film lasting two and a half hours, almost three. And I would have made a second film, part 2, showing us the aftermath. Showing us the reconstruction and the return to a... changed life. Finally, a word must be said about the excellent music composed by the late James Horner (Braveheart, Star Trek 2, Casper, Field Of Dreams, Titanic, Avatar, Apollo 13) who, as he always did, found the right notes (even if he constantly self-plagiarized himself... but that's another story...).

I *love* this one so much, Asia and BJ! Mimi Leder directed. ☄ It's very similar to ARMAGEDDON (1998), but it was more "fun"... this one made me feel and contemplate.

Asteroids are in an orbit around the sun. Meteor's are asteroids which have come through Earth's atmosphere. Tunguska, Chicxulub, etc. Comets are also in orbit around the sun but tend to be smaller and are made of ice. They "grow" a tail when they get closer to the sun and start to melt.

as a truck driver, I can tell you there are caves big enough to drive a semi truck cause I have driven in them and that is used to store foods at constant cold temps. sorry to say we don't have enough for all Americans but you will be surprise at how many underground facilities we have that most of the public don't know they exist.

Let's see, the safest place to avoid the tsunami would be Mt. Doom. The range of mountains surrounding it would be an excellent 'break' with a large central plain to accept overflow. Looks like our astronomer is Charles Martin Smith whom played Terry Fields in American Graffiti.

I've always loved this story, even a bit more than Armageddon. The story is more dramatic and closer to if or when this might happen. That hopefully there would be some type of plan to save humanity. It is a shame that they would have to do something like they did with the lottery and nobody over 50 would be allowed in to continue play human race. The mom killing herself was always such a sad scene. But the crew on the ship sacrificing himself for the survival of the planet always gets me.

A must follow up movie to this one is 'Armageddon' (1998), more action & less fact but with Bruce Willis you know you can't go wrong. Also I think the random people picked in the lottery did get to take their families (to prevent people from not going without their families) so a family of 5 would result in 4 less draws to stay to the 800,000 random people along with 200,000 selected people meant a total of 1,000,000 were going to be saved. Yes we do scan the skies for this threat but with the funding we have only 1% to 2% of the sky is scanned & depending on the size of the threat we currently are unable to do anything about it. There was a test just done to see if we have a possible solution.

"E.L.E" stands for *Extinction Level Event*. In the earlier scenes, just after the FBI forced her off the road and brought her to the White House to meet with the President, he mentioned the correct pronunciation to her: 'E.L.E". She had first wrongly thought that the word was 'Ellie' as in a person who perhaps had an affair with a powerful politician in Washington. So, when the President mentioned the correct pronunciation (he said the words 'E-L-E' as separate letters), she then did her own internet research at the library and discovered that 'E.L.E' stood for *Extinction Level Event*, and she saw depictions of asteroids wiping out the dinosaurs, that's when it hit her. And that's why she was so nervous and cynical when she met with her father and his new young wife for drinks. Because in her mind there was no future for humanity. So, any long-term plans that people were making, were basically all for nothing. That was the reason for her poor 'DGAF' attitude in that scene with her dad and his new wife.

Asia .. You asking about these Caves in Mo. I have seen these caves they are along the Mississippi River and are on both the Illinois and Missouri side. Pretty intense ... A lot of them are rented out to companies that need a cool location for products and such . Although they do have the ones that the Gov. uses too . I seen this movie for the first time in theaters . it came out the same year as Godzilla and Armageddon .. That was definitely the year for disaster movies ! lol There had to be some deal the Chrysler building in NY.. cause it got destroyed in All 3 movies ! lol

800,000 people and their family, if they are married, they take that family. I figured that single people could take sisters and/or brothers, but not parents if they are over 50. And this is just the US, not worldwide, I guess the movie government left the rest of the world to figure out their own future, lol

Nice reaction and a pretty good movie. It always blows my mind knowing we (earth) are rotating at 1000 mph at the equator and moving through space at 67,000 mph and completely unaware of it being pulled down by gravity. The ISS (international space station) is orbiting earth at 18,000 mph or... 5 miles per SECOND (try to visualize that!). The average comet speeds are over 100,000 mph or... 30 miles per SECOND. Put another way a comet would take 93 seconds to move from New York City to Los Angeles 😬

Deep Impact (1998) - comet threatens the Earth Armageddon (1998) - asteroid threatens the Earth Two totally different movies! If you haven't seen Armageddon yet, you should check it out now and tell us which movie you love more (they're both awesome but for very different reasons). :) No, technically this is not science fiction; it's a fictional disaster movie (as is Armageddon). Science fiction is usually set in the future (but not always) and has technology that is more advanced than what we currently possess at the time the story was being told (ex: spaceships, phasers, transporters, time machines, etc). This movie was set in present-day and used technology we actually had in 1998 (ditto Armageddon) to tackle the problem. Gotta love Morgan Freeman. Our fantasy first black President before we had Barack. If Morgan says things will be okay, we know they will be. :) Loved y'alls reactions! Right there with you Asia; I cried too!! Oh, and I was living in Austin when you had your Desoto scare (if that happened in 1994), but I still remember it! Glad you weren't hurt! Love and peace to you both!

Morgan Freeman shone in this one, nice seeing Frodo Baggins in a disaster film, oh wait haha shoot the LOTR trilogy was an E.L.E. for sure. Nice reaction Asia and BJ, I've never experienced a tornado and don't want to. Bless you all in Texas. Kitboga.
