I remember once when we were testing a TLAM-D and I guess it was electric launch, but it did not leave the tube when launched. That was a very nervous 10 minutes. If that rocket motor ignited I don't know what would have happened. We'd experience what it was to be the Kursk. We had to trim the ship to get it to slide out by gravity. We nicknamed it the Dud.

@rrobb9853
@rrobb9853 4 месяца назад
That scene was based on the loss of HMS Thetis in 1939. The ship was on builder's trials. A trickle valve in the inner tube door was opened, to see if the tube was dry. No water came out so the inner torpedo 'door' was opened. Unknown until that point, paint had blocked the trickle valve and the tube was wet. The forward compartments flooded and nearly every man aboard - over 100 - died, eventually. The death toll was so high because a lot of civilians - shipyard workers, etc were aboard for the first dive.

I grew up in East FL near Cape Canaveral. I had a friend who got a job for RCA that had a contract testing torpedoes at Andros Island .When testing the torpedoes they would bob up and down vertically at the end of their run . It was his job to retrieve the torpedo and get it onboard the retrieval boat . This was in the 1970's .

When I first heard about wire guided torpedos I naturally equated them to the wire guided TOW anti-tank missile on the Bradley (BFV) b/c I worked with BFVs in the army. The gunner must keep the sight reticle on the target to guide the missile until impact. So, I imagined a submariner staring into a sight of some sort guiding the torpedo with a joystick. Then, I realized how insane and impossible that would be b/c of darkness and distance. Kinda felt dumb at that point. I still find it surprising that the torps are wire guided. By now I expect they would be more like air to air missiles. The aircraft uses its radar to provide guidance to the missile until the missile is within a certain range to target. Then, the missile's sensors and guidance system steer it into the bandit's face. I suppose a wire guided torp is quieter than one with its own sonar pinging away at the target as it closes the distance. idk

I never got to see a test shot of torps onboard. We had tubes on the upper deck, but they never seemed to have anything done to them. The helicopter used to regularly go up with torpedoes though so maybe we didn't need to use the tubes. I never thought to ask. Type 23 has a system where they launch torps out of a tube in the side of the superstructure. It's like a porthole! The weapon actually traverses the waist to get into the sea. Imagine going for an upper deck bimble after coming off watch and casually getting hit by a torpedo ha ha.

Slight correction, water does compress, but it is fractional compared to air. Even the deepest diving subs are unlikely to be in more than 5% reduction in water volume by pressure. It plays a role in crushing, and you've probably heard it in the initial stage. It's water's springiness as the cause of the explosive ram effect it has on the air inside the submerged vessel. Anyway, for most practical concerns and pressures, it is incompressible- but you will be a few percentage points out at the extremity. I suppose it's worth knowing that a water pressurizing system like this can 'explode' or tear itself open, as a truly incompressible substance would only leak out.

Having watched many of your play throughs of Cold Waters I had several questions about guided torpedoes and thought through most. There is one more that I was curious about though, if it cannot be answered I do completely understand. After the wire is cut, what happens to the REDACTED length of wire now paid out? It seems like a dangerous gamble for the screw or pump jet of the Sub or even another ship. Initially I thought maybe the Boat would slurp the wire back up like a spaghetti but that seems ridiculous. Is it weighted so that it sinks to the seafloor somewhat quickly? Thanks for bringing out the whiteboard!

@cideltacommand7169
@cideltacommand7169 4 месяца назад
Answer Passive sonar - lisen to low and medium frequency sounds, good at bearing and Okayish at distance, works much better against surface ships than subs Active sonar- low frequency for range (more expensive) High frequency for less range but more clarity (cheaper) Active sonar sends out pings of noise which then it searches for them as they bounce back from underwater objects such as the sea floor and large objects. It is usually 210 to 235 decibels so there is no hiding The only classified things are the specific frequencies and sonar arrays.

Curious but why do they fill the tube with water from inside the submarine? why not just fill using sea water from outside saving space, extra tubes and valves etc? Could they use magnetic launch rails within the tube to push the torpedo out? This would save space as you don't need the water round tube tanks or the impulse tank or the equipment to create the impulse. Is the fibre optic cable stored on each torpedo and how is it connected to the ship's control systems. Also, why doesn't the torpedo hunt for it's target directly and so not need the cable? Sorry for all the questions but I'm a novice at this.

6000 lbs of pressure is going to turn you into pink mist and when they "launch" you you will be painting everything down wind. Would you settle for 200 lbs? At 200 psi you will be mostly whole going into the water. One more thing, surface tubes are 12.75 inches, do you want them to chunk you up first to fit?

Couldn't you just have a dry loaded tube (sabot fitted around it for air tightness) and have a pipe aft of the torpedo. Open up the pipe and the pressure floods the tube aft to forward propelling the torpedo out. Open up the muzzle and outer doors in sync as the torpedo gets forced out via pressure and just have one sound signature (the escaping air) upon launch. No separate tanks needed. You could even drain the air as the torpedo is being forced out the tube. Just a thought I'm not good with physics but theory?

I understand that the torpedo cables used to be copper but are now fiber optics which makes sense. I assume that when the cable is "cut" it is cut from the torpedo and then winched back up on the submarine right? Fiber optic cables are expensive.

For the wired ones, I guess you can cut the cable when you know it does not have enough range to come back at the launch vessel. For the wireless surface ship ones I guess they must go down to below the ships draft. I would be scared that the target would go quiet and I would be the loudest thing in the sea and it would come back at me.
