Living in London in the 70s, my landlady’s son was one of DP’s lawyers and he gave me a couple of tickets to see a show. As a 17 year old having lived in Africa all of my life up until then, I had had little or no exposure to rock music, this concert was my initiation to a journey which has lasted over half a century now. It was an eye (and ear) opener! I can’t forget the sensation of the bass thumping through my body, and the absolute awe I felt when I heard this song for the first time. Later saw the Mk 3 lineup with Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale (also excellent!) and was fortunate enough to be at the only live representation of Roger Glover’s Butterfly Ball with an all star lineup at the Royal Albert Hall. Ah, to be young again …

I grew up in this generation. There was so many great musicians, bands, and songs, coming out one after another, we knew deep down we had something special. It wasn't until things started to change, go down hill as far as real talent and skill was concerned, along with great songs, then did we realized just how great we really had it in the music world. Music was our world. By the 80s, when some great things were starting again to come out, things were looking up...but... I was listening to the old stuff long before they called it classic rock. I just didn't care for most of what was new, and some was down right horrible, yet the music corporation were promoting all of it. Unheard of in our day. Our music is timeless.

John Lord passed away in 2012 and Ritchie Blackmore left the band decades ago. Ian Gillian is 78 now. I saw an interview with him years ago where he said that he used to tell Ritchie that he needed to rest his voice and couldn’t do Child in Time that night. Ian is one of rock's greatest voices. Ian Paice the drummer has some outstanding drum solos on RU-vid you could check out. He's a GREAT drummer.

A bit of trivia: Deep Purple borrowed the riff from a band called IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY. Their track was called BOMBAY CALLING.

A somewhat known fact is that this song was actually a reconstruction of a song originally published by "Its a Beautiful Day" called "Bombay Calling" and they were sued for the reproduction of the base musical progression. They had admittingly made the reconstruction with that song in mind. Very different but incredible on it's own merit.

I grew up in the sixties and seventies, and if you keep going down the "proverbial" rabbit hole of music from this era... you will be constantly shocked in a great way!

Finally hit the Purple! So many great songs. When you get around to listening to Highway Star in the 4 runner put on the cruise control or you’ll get a speeding ticket.

Hi. Great reaction, so glad you enjoyed it and well done for not mentioning the static audience, as many reactors do when viewing this video. This was broadcast by my local independant TV station Granada TV here in the NW of England as part of the series "Doing Their Thing" featuring different live performers. Obviously technology back then wasn't as sophisticated as it is today, so the audience in the TV studio would have been under strict instruction not to distract from the performance in any way. I also seem to recall that these performances were broadcast live, rather than pre recorded, (though I could be mistaken, it was a long time ago after all), so this was doubly important as people would be tuning in to watch Deep Purple perform and not be distracted by "Whoops and Hollers" from the audience. The band had numerous personnel changes over the years, but for most fans this was the classic line up, sheer musical talent.

The singer is Ian Gillian..he was one the best singers of his time. I have been watching your videos all day. I can not believe you have not heard some of the best music in the world before hearing it at the time you recorded the video. Curiosity, child, how old are you. You seem to have missed out on some really GREAT MUSIC.❤

I worked a warehouse gig around 10yrs back. We were able to listen to music in our department. Each person had a day they were in charge of the music. Every time this older guy was in charge of the music, he would play this song every time. Honestly, I didn't like it at first. Then I couldn't wait for it to come on!

Congratulations on stumbling into the first chapter in the history of heavy rock. This band was tremendous and worked constantly in the early 70s. They played in Central New York twice a year then...and I never missed them.

It might be hard to believe, for some,...... but as of 2024, this was 54 years ago....... Still INCRDIBLE. There are plenty of Deep Purlple songs, that could vie for thier "best", but this is it for me. Ian is in the running for best Rock Singer IMO. (He's obviosly the best screamer... not only from that time.)

That triplet of notes that you loved...was inspired by a band called It's a Beautiful Day and their album of the same name. The track that inspired Deep Purple to write Child In Time is called Bombay Calling. Deep Purple wrote a classic. If you were wondering why the audience weren't reacting, it's because this was a studio recording, and they were told not to anything but listen. Besides the audience were people who just dropped in and weren't necessarily Rock music fans.

Deep Purple,Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were truly the BIG 3 of Rock's transition into otherworldly music I was lucky enough to see all of them live many times during the 70's
