The crowd was told to be quite and mellow so this could be recorded . , , Deep Purple was the start of hard rock , Black Sabbath was the start of heavy metal , . This line up of musicians with DEEP PURPLE at this time was some of the best , they all knew how to play their instruments very well !! This is a protest song to war . And yes , all those other bands were around . Try HIGHWAY STAR , or BURN , or RAT BAT BLUE , or LAZY , or FIREBALL , or SPEED KING , or , , , way too many to name here !!!!!

This was recorded live for a TV show. The audience was told by the TV people not to react until after the song was over because they didn't want any audience noise on the recording. There's your answer.

The period from the late 60's to the late 70's is the most creative period in music history with the number of great bands and musicians taking their art form to new heights. I'm not saying there aren't other great creative artists from all time periods, just that this period is the most prolific and original. The Beatles actually led the way with their creativity in the late 60's, and then Led Zeppelin transforming blues into something no one had ever heard before. Of course, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, and many many others were right there as well. It was a great time be alive.

It is indeed a protest song to the US war in Vietnam, and as Tuija Kantola says, it feels valid nowadays too. Btw. this performance was done in a studio, and the crowd was not allowed to make any noise during the filming. This song is still one of my favourites from Deep Purple. I'm still a huge fan of them and also a Led Zeppelin fan.

I was not born then, but I love this song ❤ It is a protest song to the US war in Vietnam. But for me as a European, with Russia doing what they do, it feels valid in these times to. Just change the US to Russia.

December 7 1970 I had just joined the Marine Corps. Lookin back I was just a child then. It seems ironic that I was heading straight in to what this song was protesting. I would do it again to preserve our freedom.

It was a tv studio audience. Back then the audience were told to just sit in silence. Seems weird to us now but that’s how it was. Oh and it was a Hammond C3 organ.

Deep Purple, together with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin are referred to as the "Big Three" founders of heavy metal. And there is a running debate who was the 1st, Balck Sabbath with Ozzy Osborn or Deep Purple with Ian Gillian some has donned the title to Ozzy Osborne as being "The Father of Metal." Metal has gone thru many phases in its history, and many sub-genres have developed. Deep Purple introduced "Speed Metal" with their 1969 hit "Deep Purple - Speed King - Live (1970)" and "Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills (live From the Legacy Of The Beast Tour)" this band brought soaring ballads to heavy metal along with "power metal" and finally "Judas Preist - Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver (BBC Performance)" Preist brought lots and lots of Leather. They all started pretty much in the mid to late 60s! That's why I say it was hard for some of us to follow ALL of these bands because there was so many Great ones plus some great top 40 songs back then!

That is a Hammond B3 played through a Marshall amp it ia A BEAST ! Emerson Lake and Palmer used a B3 also Uriah Heep and others The incorporation of keys into heavy rock early metal was common. Almost EVERY heavy guitar player will tell you that Ritchie Balckmore influenced them and hard rock and metal in general. The singer ? Ian Gillan was also a beast.

This was a masterpiece of HARD ROCK, very hard to play and sing also, about the cold war and children and young soldiers dying because of it. The screams are the people crying for their sons, brothers, relatives and friends dying. The horror of war is incredible and well portrayed in this song. You have to look for the complete lyrics to understand. Amazing song from the best band, great keyboards, awesone guitar, amazing drums, excellent bass and incredible vocals. Not like Rolling Stones, or something like that, this guys were the best of the best, not a bunch of high school partners, or hippies neighbors, these are real musicians, great artists, looking for the greatness of music. Try other pieces from them and you'll see. DEEP PURPLE is the best hard rock band ever!!!

It was a live recording the audience was asked the listen and not react until it was over this was not the norm that's why we got such a good recording

Professional Recordings would require silence during the entire process and so the audience might’ve been cautioned to keep quiet withholding any applause ‘till the end or when prompted to (if anyone has ever been on a live show recording - not uncommon).

Yes kids this was 1970 and I was 10 and heard this song at a frat house on my paper route. I was totally in shock and same time changed my outlook on music and opened my eye's to the horror of war. No cpu assist or backing track's . These guys were the real deal live. They were heavily into classical and jazz influences. Most of Brit band Zep, Sab for sure more bluesy. Although DP has some great blues based song's they were more into fast paced high energy jam session style hard rock

The '60s and '70s were remarkable for musical creativity in Britain and America. New, brilliant albums appeared almost every day. I was a kid living in a communist country, but Western music reached us without any major problems. While you couldn't buy these vinyls in stores, complete albums of music were broadcast on the radio. The announcer said 3-2-1-0-start and everyone could record an LP (!) Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Santana, Yes, King Crimson, Jimi Hendrix, Roling Stones, The Doors and others, which I will not mention, because there are theirs too much. Those were very strange times in this regard. It was normal for us, but years later I can see that these were extraordinary times. The cause, it was said, lay in that first generation born after the war who yearned for prosperity and entertainment. This too, but I think that the real cause of this musical explosion, we get know nowadays.

music today is full of computer synth back then they were real musicians bands today dont hold a candle to Deep Purple , Led Zepplin Pink Floyd Black Sabbath and so on bands from 60s and 70s were the leaders of rock music and theres not a band around that stands up to the bands from theses decades

This was a TV-performance and the public were instructed to keep it "nice" and stay in their seats. But the music they got to hear were very revolutionizing. So they're probably shocked as well

If you play guitar, you know who Ritchie Blackmore is. Top 3 in the world at that time. They are all the very best of the best rock had to offer then. The word iconic is an understatement in regards to Deep Purple.

i was 9 at the time and wasn't allowed to listen to rock. 8 years later i owned a motorcycle and went to all kinds of gigs on my bike. deep purple and black sabbath were always played and we used to headbang!

They were English, that was an English crowd, the English are known to be very reserved. It is interesting B/C the Beatles caused a completely different reaction with the girls all screaming. This is a bit later I guess.

In regards to the crowd, people were not always the attention whores that we have today. Also, they were asked by the TV studio to remain quiet/still for taping. So many reactors key on the crowd. Who the hell goes to see a band for the crowd?

This song was not a banger ,I was only 5 years old an my sister was 3 ,I think that was the reason that my father was not drafted or I would say forced to go fight in that Vietnam war ,it was a sad time then ,the world was in turmoil an didnt know what was going to happen ,because of the war an going into a cold war with the USSR! You can tell by the the dreary sound in the music ,the whaling & the erratic guitar solo in which I think Richy Blackmore created to represent a chaotic time! Even as I was growing up into a teen ,none of my friends that had this album did not play this song because it was more of a story being told! But anyway great review you two!..👍👍

The only downside too music now is the artist seem to be sampling and generating the same rubbish on computer and a lot of today's singers if you turn off auto tune, I personally wouldn't give them loose change, and too hear some of these so called artists live hun I'd rather build a bonfire with my money
