This is not a "Concerto for group and orchestra", this is a Concerto for DEEP PURPLE and orchestra. No one else can ever play like that, even if they play all the notes exactly. "All tricks were performed by professionals, do not try to repeat them".

This is like the ultimate thing that prob ever happened in Rock History during that time, i mean, Classical Music led by an oustanding Orchestra, Amazing musicianship to the high level of Virtuosity of every single member of this group!! The amazing groove that rock had at that time with that psychedelic touch to it!! I fucking love this album n i still consider it my fav of all time, greatest band of all time!! (R.I.P Jon Lord)

This had a huge influence on me at age 15! First time I saw a successful connection between rock & classical. I think this helped pave the way for the likes of Rick Wakeman ("Journey to the centre of the Earth") and indeed what became known as Progressive Rock in the next decade.

If only Jon Lord composed more, he could have been a wonder in both classical and rock traditions. This is a work of enormous intellectual might, pure genius at its most creative best! At the time it may have been a bit amusing and curious but by far it makes this work a monumental contribution. Jon and Malcolm, hope you are both in Golden Time. Thank you for being daring, innovative, creative and experimental.

Interesting to note that the classic iinstrument players are mostly "over 50" and passed away by now, but we can still enjoy their contribution to the still living (2024) Deep Purple in their infancy! Ritchie Blackmore is a modern day Beethoven, with Jon Lord of Bachian equivalence!!

I recall reading that Ritchie was given (I think) 24 bars to play a solo, and he went for something like 54 bars, not bothering to count. The orchestra supposedly did not appreciate his antics.
@erikthorsen4466
@erikthorsen4466 3 года назад
@@Tunkkis I'd guess at that time the orchestra musicians had a rather dim view of rock in general. It is my understanding that the conductor whose name escapes me had a good relationship with Jon Lord and they worked together to put this together. If you watch closely however, the one orchestra musician seems to be getting into it bouncing his leg tapping his foot lol. He obviously appreciated it.

my knowledge of classical music i limited but still, this is 1969. This concert was increible innovative by that time. To sad that the mix between rock and classical music haven't been explored so much since then. It sounds so great!

This has to be one of the most successful cross-genre pieces ever. And just goes to show the inventiveness, skill and boldness of great musicianship. Purple are every bit as virtuoso as the orchestra. And it lays testament that rock music can be serious and diverse as classical music.... well almost.... good to see some members of the orchestra tempted to bop!!
@maxwellfan55
@maxwellfan55 4 года назад
Image any wannabes trying to do this now. ? My hat is doffed to all the musicians present, but speaking as a guitar player, the tone and fluidity coming from Blackmore takes one's breath away. Surely one of the most exciting, edge of your seat pieces of live guitar improvisation ever. But to imagine achieving this in front of a full professional orchestra, in front of a packed audience, in front of cameras and recording engineers, and in the Royal Albert Hall.....????? I hope Hendrix got to hear it.

I found this LP (import, in US) in 1985 as a teenager. My mother hates modern classical music with too much percussion She's a traditional classical music fan pre-dating the russian composers late 19th century. I was trying to impress her at the time as a fourteen year old kid who just liked good rock music. To her credit, she didn't mock me. As an experiment, it still holds up today.

In the Magic Theater Head shop where my friend Bruce Martin worked. The only reason he worked there was because they had a bitchin' stereo . Big fat Marantz with with Wollensack reel to reel Tape machine.and Voice of the theater Speakers. When the owner put this album on , I thought I would be bored outta my skull. Lo and behold it blew me away. Hooked on Deep Purple ever since.

A fantastic piece of work that is starting to get the credit it deserves. I loved what purple went on to become, would have loved to hear them like this more often, playing with concentration not getting too wild. Blacmore pulls off an amazing solo ahead of it's time, You gotta have some balls to walk out in front of a world respected orchestra and play so clean/precise and not feel overawed. I can't think of a guitarist who could play that clean with minimum distortion anywhere near as well.

i have always thought that it is great to hear a band before they get famous.........by that time they become a parody of themselves. if you listen to the 'deep purple' album that came before this and 'in rock' which came after; the musicianship speaks for itself. pretty amazing stuff. they covered alot of ground. this is 43 years old and performed live! i just don't think many groups could do this........then or now.
