Der Song entstand im Dezember 1971 in Montreux in der Schweiz. Deep Purple wollte mit diesem Song eine kommerzielle Single machen, für den Fall, dass das Plattenlabel danach verlangen würde. "Never Before" beginnt mit einem funkig-bluesigen Groove und verbindet Deep Purples Hardrock-Wurzeln mit einem an die Beatles erinnernden Mittelteil (und gibt eine Vorahnung an Deep Purples Klassiker "Woman from Tokyo" aus dem Jahr 1973).
"Never Before" wurde zwei Monate vor dem Erscheinen von "Machine Head" als erster Song auf den neugegründeten Label Purple Records veröffentlicht.
The song was written in December 1971 in Montreux, Switzerland. Deep Purple wanted to make a commercial single with this song, in case the record label would ask for it. "Never Before" begins with a funky bluesy groove and blends Deep Purple's hard rock roots with a Beatle-inspired middle section (and gives a foreshadowing to Deep Purple's 1973 "Woman from Tokyo" classic).
"Never Before" was released two months before the release of "Machine Head" as the first song on the newly founded label Purple Records.
