Funny, no I think it’s funny at all. But years after years until the sum of more than 40 in my country of origin was like cult or initiation 🤔🤔be one side or the other. Or Led Zeppelin fan or Deep Purple fan. They were enemies and they clashed many many times. The thing was so intense, you were from one or the other you family, friends and boyfriend/ girlfriends had to be. Like a Japanese samurai clan. The towns and boroughs line were well defined You can’t have any friends from the enemy side and…….. I was a MUSIC LOVER so I broke those conjures🤫🤫🤔🤔🫢🫢. And I had very good friends from both sides 🙃🙃🙃. My intentions were to enjoy those parties, enjoy the music from both bands not to fight with anyone. We were so so young and rebellious.That was my secret until those times were gone. Violent but at the same time beautiful and memorable moments 😏😏😏. Despite that that kind of music was banned for the Government , we were relentless and didn’t fear to the police or the haters. What a great times. Those times never ever coming back. Sad 😢 😢 Good reaction 🤟🤟🤟👍👍😉😉

"Frank Zappa and the Mothers" ...of Invention ... "had the best place around" .... The lyrics actually tell the story of the recording of Machine Head . Deep Purple were originally all set to record the album at the Casino in Montreux, Switzerland. They were just awaiting a Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention concert to be held before the recording could begin. But the Casino burnt down during the concert, after some stupid had fired a flare gun into the Casino's ceiling. (Purple were in the audience. They ended up at the Grand Hotel, closed for the winter season, where the recording eventually commenced during December 1971. They recorded the album with the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, also mentioned in the lyrics.

Hey there again , Ritchie Blackmore the guitarist along with Jon Lord on organ were prolific in this period ,the 5 albums they did do not contain any 'duff' songs . Every ones a winner so to speak. Love mk 2 Deep Purple the most. Im glad you like .

Smoke on the water is what put them on the map. And it put them on the map in a very massive manner. The machine head album itself was a huge thing. Nothing made them more successful than this song and this album. It is the quintessential deep purple.

The original lineup was Rod Evans on vocals, Nick Simper on bass, Jon Lord on keys, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar and Ian Paice on drums. Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (bass) replaced Evans and Simper and that is when they got very popular. Eventually, Gillan and Glover were replaced by David Coverdale and Glen Hughes. Blackmore did not like the direction the new members were taking the band so he left and formed Rainbow. Tommy Bolin replaced Ritchie for one album until Bolin passed away and the band broke up for a while. Coverdale, Lord and Paice formed Whitesnake but eventually only Coverdale was left in Whitesnake. Deep Purple reunited with Gillan, Lord, Blackmore, Paice and Glover in the 80s for three more albums but Ritchie and Ian Gillan didn't really get along and Ian left for one album but returned when Blackmore left to reform Rainbow and eventually his Renaisaince style band with his new wife Blackmore's Night. Today Ian Gillan, Ian Paice and Roger Glover remain, Jon Lord passed away but the band is still active today. I think I got most of that accurate or at least close to accurate.

If you never picked up a guitar in your life, you can learn to play this riff literally in about 10 minutes.....its almost always the first riff new players learn. "Unknown Soldier" and "When a Blind Man Cries" are great Deep Purple tunes too

I agree with you -- SUCH a great voice. I have always loved it, he has a great tone to his voice, and you're right -- he plays around with the notes. And also 👍 about all the other guys -- this has always been my favorite band. Love your reactions! -- many thanks. So, so many great songs of theirs...I'll let the masses decide, and I'll come back when you get to the ones that aren't as famous but are still excellent. One kind of sad thing is that I wish there was more live video footage from those early Ian Gillan years. There is some but just not as much as there should be. I think "Highway Star" will probably be next. There is live footage of Ian doing it...I think 2 versions and one is spliced together by a fan but it's really well done. Cheers!

From the highly successful Machine Head album. Other hits on it are Highway Star, Space Truckin and Lazy. You definitely need to check out the 1970 live in London video of Mandrake Root. You can almost hear the foundations being laid for heavy/speed metal. Great reaction as always.😀

If you want to hear, in my opinion, the best versions of their songs live, do yourself a favor and listen to the album Made in Japan. It is a mind-blowing experience. If you are a DP fan, it is a must hear. Enjoy

Hi Ola, as always, I love your reaction. So genuine and real. The smoke on the water was the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva in Switzerland. The band was there to record an album at the casino complex. However, the casino was destroyed in the fire.

I am amazed and awed every time I watch Deep purple perform. They are such great musicians, dynamic performers, and they put on a great show. Each member is legendary in rock music. Unfortunately Ian Gillan left the group in 1973. Richie Blackmore said in an interview that he never got along with Ian. Richie Blackmore was friends with the drummer in Led Zeppelin John Bonham. They would often get together when performing in the same place, and hit the bars. I enjoyed your reaction and more Deep Purple.

I'm not certain as I wasn't there but I think I remember reading that Ritchie and Ian got along for the first couple years but then it started to go south. They did re-unite 2 more times, as you know, but again the good vibes didn't last between them. 2 strong personalities....

Are you talking about the version with the feedback? It's live. Actually ...Where i was at it was confusing. We would hear it on the radio and great, then hear it another time and not great. The studio version sounds dead compared to the live ...Made In japan .. album that they were also playing on the radio at the time.

Delightful reaction. And how many shows did I see in the mid-to-late 70s in fairly small intimate venues like this for cheap ticket prices of these bands that end up becoming iconic. Oh my. You absolutely have to hear Highway Star off of their Machine Head album, which is the album that this song is off of. It's a famous album with a bunch of hits and it influenced so much Rock music. I really think you should hear the studio version because that was what was on the radio all the time and this album got played everywhere all the time, but you get to hear that sheer wizardry of it. But I have seen a great live recording love it as well, and either way you get to hear Jon Lord on the Hammond organ doing these really amazing fast parallel runs with Richie Blackmore on the guitar. My Woman from Tokyo is another hit, but my favorite two are on side B of the record album and they are back-to-back, Lazy, and, Space Truckin'.

Great video! This song is based on true events, chronicling the 1971 fire at Montreux Casino in Montreux, Switzerland at a Frank Zappa concert. May I recommend checking out a *3 SISTER* rock band, they have an incredibly infectious energy and grew up watching Queen, Pink Floyd, Muse, Guns n' Roses, Metallica concerts and I think you'll love them. 'The Warning - ERROR Live at Teatro Metropolitan' for easy searching :)

It's a pity that the New York concert only has two of three verses, so look up the lyrics and you'll know more of their recording of Machine Head. By the way, Smoke On The Water was just a soundcheck that wasn't to be anything. But they needed one more song to get a full album, therefore Gillan and Glover wrote the lyrics about what had happened to them in Montreux.

Original members were Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord and Ian Paice... Ritchie left the band in 1975. They others stayed until the end in 1976. There was reunion of DP Mk. 2 in 1984.🤓

Deep Purple had 4 different line ups, with the only constant member being Ian Paice, the drummer. They had several lead singers, including Ian Gillan (seen in this video), David Coverdale of Whitesnake, and my favourite, bassist and vocalist, Glenn Hughes. Check out their song "Burn".

Smoke on the Water was a filler track on the Machine Head album. It wasn't originally intended to be on the album. The guitarist is Richie Blackmore.

Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water !!! Best version is from the ...Made In Japan ... Album Yes ... real story. Lake in Switzerland when hotels were shutting down for the winter which is way the smoke would get cold and draft low over the water. It is quit a story and google it to get it all. . They had to record in one of the shut down hotels because of the Fire. A lot is explained in the song.

Umm, the casino in Montreux caught fire. Some idiot with a flare gun started the fire during Frank Zappa's show. The Rolling Stones mobile recording studio was there to mix the record outside. They had to move it next door to finish the record.

Blackmore wasn't happy with the direction they were going and wanted to be heavier and wanted a front man like Jim Morrison of the Doors. They found Gillan, but he said him and the bass player were a package deal. Partly because they were poor and had to share their wardrobe.

California Jam -- I agree, that's best for seeing "Burn" performed but the original studio version I think is the way to go first with "Burn" -- the sound quality is just so much better, don't you think? But I'm with you as far as the best version where you can see them perform it. Maybe hear the original album version, then watch it live? That would be my suggestion.

(I've seen them about 15 times) but it's just, for me, with "Burn" -- the studio version is soo good that I think it should be someone's first exposure to the song.....then the live version, and I too would choose the Cal.
