Installing deep utilities in a new subdivision is relatively easy; almost any operator who claims they can dig a triple trench can do it. This is because there's nothing else in the ground...yet.
But let's go to an intersection on Vancouver's Westside, Oakridge to be specific. This development began its construction in the 1950's. Since then they have been burying every pipe and cable known to man throughout this intersection.
@hall_constructors
not only has to dig around and expose all of the existing lines, but they have to safely and strategically suspend those lines in the air. After all of that, then they can finally begin to lower the 1350 concrete storm pipe down and in between the many obstacles. It's going deep underneath the maze of existing utilities where the ground will never freeze.
Part 2 will have pipe going in the ground! coming soon

Impressive takes nerves of steel and a steady hand to dig that deep through utilities in the middle of the street .

Awesome video I know if I was digging around utilities like that I would like to have a pin grabber coupler so you can spin the bucket backwards for around pipes etc

I've worked around a lot of good utility operators and this man is good. Not everyone can dig around every obstacle known to man and never hit a thing all while being consistent yet precise and careful

The real good ones are the ones that feel a obstacle an stop that isnt known an dont damage it

Your not feeling anything with cat 374 unless it’s some RCP pipe

Interesting choice of teeth on the bucket. Here they would be used for digging frost or hard pan. For water and sewer I used wide paddle teeth pin on bucket forget about the smoothedge.

For the west side Vancouver this doesn’t look like that bad of a dig other than the traffic.... Seems nice actually. At least they don’t have that spiderweb of overhead trolly lines, hydro and tel that you get further in..... plus wood box water that’s still active and seemingly 2 of every service to every house. Digging in Vancouver is so fun!!!!

This is south Vancouver. Not west van.
@ShredForth

@@bdhall_ca I know it’s not west van. Main is E/W dividing line so Cambie still counts as the west side does it not? All I saw was Cambie so I just guessed at area. I was just saying that for an area notorious for unaccounted for, aging infrastructure that that section of excavation seems nice.

I was lead hoe, water and sewer for 7 years in Red Deer with my share of main replacement. Always used a 400, a 374 Cat seems huge! Lol almost twice the size ... How deep were you going, sani or storm?

Well when the operator cant see, it's a team effort , a good ' Top Man '' will guide him . Team work. I layed pipe for 18yrs, the deepest I every was with sanitary sewer was 45ft... The top 20' or so was benched out then used 2 - 10ft tall ×18ft long with a 4ft stacker on top ditch boxes.

The newer Cats sound like that. They are super quiet. The guys in the ground level love it.

@@Irven51 , I understand that. But I do miss the sounds comi g from the older 200 series . Each one had a sound of its own which was music to my ears compared to how all today's machines sound like sewing machines to me. (Really)

Why does it take such a big machine??
@FattyMatty024
@FattyMatty024 3 года назад
Not only for the depth of the dig, but the weight to reach out and pull the ditch boxes out once dirt caves in on them. Even with no cave ins reaching way out and lifting heavy boxes out of a hole is not for a small machine.
