This is such a great video and every beginner should be forced to watch it! As a new kite-surfer I could have used this video yesterday - then I would still have had my cabrinha kite today! :-D (Expensive lesson)

Super stoked. 100,000 views. This video was only done to show a mate that self rescue actually works in deep water. I never expected it to do so well. Cheers Jonny

Your Board is a great Fin if you need to re direct your sail back to shore if for instance cross winds or currents are effecting your route to shore. Its good to practice for all eventualities

Really glad you appreciated it. Hope the kiting went well and you didn't need to use a self rescue.

Great video, but in calm and ideal conditions. The dangerous part of this video is the pulling of the safety line to reach the bar. This is why in strong winds or where there is a lot of waves and turbulence, that you go out with gloves. Pulling that line could cut you big time if the kite decides to launch itself again. Remember you're not in control of the kite when you do a self-rescue, until you've reached it.

Hi Fernando. Glad you liked the video. Wearing gloves for certain extreme situations may help some but I find up to 30 knots I've never had such need. Remember if you are climbing the safety line and the kite is flagged properly onto one line and the kite behaves violently, simply let go of the safety line. Or if necessary ditch the kite completely. If kiting in waves you really should consider what are your options in and emergency before you enter the water. Your skill level should be such that you can assess if it is safe to self rescue / drift in or ditch the kite completely. The same can be said for strong winds over 25 knots.

number one rule of kiteboarding , don't go out as far as you wanna swim in . # 2 when all else fails , you swim . And a tip , when you do flag the kite out and have your board . take that leash release off you harness and tie it to the board . then send it the opposite direction of the kite , while you walk the kite lines threw your hands back to the kite , once there flip it upside down and sit on the center the leading edge and reel both bar and board back in . the reattach leash back to harness to hold board while you rap the bar . once done grab the wing tip and sail your ares in . not recommended in the the surf tho , thats usually the old ditch and swim and run method . Have you seen my kite ?

the principle is the same in 30 knots - obviously water state can make a difference but it can still be done. if you are kiting 30 knots plus you should be of an advanced level and things like self rescue should be second nature. you should be able to deal with the conditions you choose to ride in. if not skip the session. the vast majority of self rescues are performed in low winds when there is not enough wind to ride. usually ( not always) in strong winds the Kite can be made to pull you to shore without performing a self rescue. if you really feel it necessary to see me do this in 30 knots you may need to wait a while, unfortunately we get few days here with 30 knots and my preference is to enjoy them when they arrive.

Good point NZ Kite, the board if you still have it can be placed fins upwards inside the kite( whilst using it as a sail) On this particular day I didn't think to take the board with me.. sorry. Whilst wrapping the lines I would usually try to keep the board on my feet or use a spare kite leash to hold the board (Pass it throught the footstraps or handle.)
@whenitswindy7034
@whenitswindy7034 8 лет назад
@kiteman the leash was a fully functional north Kiteboarding leash. it was used the correct way round and functioned as it should. this north leash had a foam float near the connection hook, maybe this is the cause of your mistake.

I had to do this on the beach when a major squall came out of nowhere and I couldn’t keep control of the kite . After activating quick rekease, the kite landed on the beach as planned BUT, big BUT … I could not get the safety line secured, as soon as I put tension on it the kite pulled hard and it would slip through my fingers. It was a horrid situation

what about a demo with a board, where to stick it?
@Thomeeno
@Thomeeno 5 лет назад
i guess you will be according situations loosing least your board in many of these cases.... I don't think we are able to swim against even collapsed kite, only way is to reach the bar and try to relaunch kite for some body-drag back to the board which will be hard in these emergency situations.....

How did you flip the kite so fast in deep water?
@whenitswindy7034
@whenitswindy7034 7 лет назад
I position the hand nearest the wing tip on top of the leading edge. I reach with the other hand as far along the LE as possible. I push down with the upper hand and up and across with the lower hand. The wind will catch the underside and help to flip it. Even without wind it is still possible to flip the kite. Just get as close to the wing tip as possible and making the crossing motion with your hands. Check it out at 3:28 practice in shallow water first.

Can also sit on the end of the leading edge.

First rule is: wear a life jacket or life vest if you ride deep water or offshore....
@whenitswindy7034
@whenitswindy7034 5 лет назад
That's certainly a good idea, also don't kite further than you're prepared and able to swim back.

If you still have the board, place it inside the kite fins up or use alongside leading edge for extra water resistance. either way take care not to rip the kite with the board.

Without returning to the beach safely you'll not be able to ride a board again... Boards can be recovered afterwards if necessary. When I made this video it was to prove to a friend that the technique actually works and has value. If I get chance in future I can make another with a board used as a fin or simply placed inside the kite.
