Deepwater thrust zones - Subsurface and outcrop

Part of The Shear Zone Channel. Forecasting the anatomy of thrust zones found in the subsurface in modern submarine settings generally carries significant uncertainty. What do these structures look like? Rob compares outcrop examples of thrust zones in turbidite sandstones (exposed in the Western Alps) with a example seismically-imaged (and drilled) in the submarine subsurface (from offshore Borneo).

Thanks a lot.The past west Alps and now Borneo offshore (SE Asian?) both give similar structures----thrust. It is a good method to discuss current oceanic structures by comparison clues from the continent, similar to that between present oceanic floor and ophiolites. I've listened to all the 80 videos on Structural Geology by now. The gains are great. However, it is still necessary for me to systematically listen to the preparation of geological maps.

Very interesting stuff. I'm pondering on the synchronous and post thrust fluid and pressure dynamics that take place in these zones. Particulally pressure solution, cobald creep, crack n seal crystalization, and the solution movement and mixing that would occur as the thrusts bring the various lithified and not so lithified rock types into close contact with each other. Thanks again Mr Butler.

All good ponderings... hard to judge timing relative to fault motion for the precipitates for Sabah.. Might be possible from core or image logs but cuttings - I doubt it... outcrop - well, yes, by looking at cross-cutting structures in the fault zone...

Great video as always, Rob! Sorry, but I’ve got to ask: which brand is your hat there? I need to get my hands on something more sturdy than my straw one… Cheers from across the North Sea

So the earth was covered in water... Only a non-scientist would rule out Love. Just because we can't see it; just because we don't know about it does that mean we can rule out possibilities - based on our religious religion?
