Deer Scouting - Picking the Best Setup

Sam and I took this scouting trip, like many others, to pick apart areas we had hunted last fall. In season scouting during the fall allowed us to find many of these places when they were hot, but we were often taking our best estimate at the time for which tree or ground set up to utilize. On this scouting trip we were able to go through a list of factors to determine what really would be the most ideal setup. Those factors included things like shootability, cover, access, lighting, thermals, and common wind direction. It allows us to have a lot more confidence going into this season.

Great job to you both. Love how you show spending the time to get the right setup and the right access. Seldom is the perfect tree in the right spot.... Rather its finding the right spot and using what's available.I also like how you identify a setup is being perfect for right or left-handed because that does make a difference.

At first I was like why hunt from the ground when you know you can climb???…… then I remembered the absolute HAMMER you smoked with Sam last year lol. Can’t wait to see this one out when it does !

My co-worker Adam Ruelle(Weyawega) says hello and says we should try to plan a hunt together on public. Says good things about your high school football days ;-) Love the public land challenges and your approach to each video - especially the breakdowns of setting up. Keep up the great work.

That mangled sapling your elbow touches at 3:27 is classic mature buck rub sign also. Looks to be near rib high where it is broken over.

Curious why so many blow overs? I'm in NC so if I'm clueless about a tornado or something in the area forgive my unawareness. Before I noticed all the root balls sticking up I thought you must have been in an area with a recent timber harvest. Those areas should have a good amount of browse soon with the open canopy and all that debris can create some excellent travel patterns. Good looking spot. Enjoyed the video and good luck.

Yes, there is some storm damage in this area.

I don't know exactly where he's at, but we had a derecho come through in July of 2019 that damaged several million acres across northern WI. I'm in the NE and we had the worse of it, but NW and central WI had significant damage as well.

Hello I enjoy your channel have you thought about using scentlok at least a head cover.I use a complete Scentlok suit. Since I started using it I worry much less about being winded by deer.

I have one and use it sometimes. It is a lot of work to properly maintain everything so I usually don't do it unless I'm going into a scenario where I know things could be dicey, like an all day sit in a bedding area in the rut, but have it as an option. I don't put all faith in it but thing it could help reduce to where it might make a difference in how deer respond to any residual scent.

I want to see someone test the cheap strap on climbing spikes on Amazon for saddle hunting. Can't find anyone who has tried them and think they could be a light setup if they work well. They are like $25.

Not exactly sure what time of season you plan to hunt this location, but I would be interested to see the view you have when the foliage comes in. Jut wondering how much visibility will be affected from when this video was shot til the time you hunt.

Was that a Huntworth 1/2 zip hoodie you're wearing? If so, what did you think of it?
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 3 года назад
Yes. It seems to be a pretty decent value piece. It's a little fuzzy on the sleeve exterior from brush busting, but that doesn't bother me too much.

@@DIYSportsman Yeah valve wise they seem great. I'll test a couple more of their pieces on a NE mule deer bowhunt this fall and get back to ya.

They help keep your feet drier with hiking boots and give you better durability walking through brush and briers.
