I currently live in the US and your take on deer hunting is a breath of fresh air. A more thoughtful and gentlemanly approach.

Nice. A First aid kit is always worth a mention if only to have it left in the vehicle, good video.

Really good suggestion to just go and watch deer to start. It helps develop fieldcraft and gives you an appreciation for these beautiful animals. I went out and did this for 18 months to learn the habitat, habits and getting close to deer. Really helps with confidence too. 243 wont do well with lead free so should’t really be recommended as a future proof option. 6.5CM, 6.5 x55 or 308 will handle long lead free bullets and are the better choice. Only a wealthy man can afford cheap glass. Most are poor optically or mechanically or both. Usually expect to pay as much for the scope as the rifle. Entry level Swaro possibly the best bet or something like a Leupold VX3 which have nice glass and are a good scope at modest cost. Used they’re a bargain for one like the 4.5-15 x40 or44. Regret selling mine! Loads fit target scopes which are handy for exposed turret quick dialling but heavy. Ammo wise absolutely try various makes but many get better tuned loads learning to reload. Boots….Altberg every time for boots for me…great British company, great boots! Knife… cheap and razor sharp Mora Companion every time. No need for anything fancier. Clothing is where personal preference and budget decides. Vast options. Wealthy pick Harlika or similar but it does the job no better than some military surplus. Deerhunter makes some excellent jackets. For trousers I recommend Fjallraven Vida Pro. Pricey but last years and are tough and practical plus breathe and dry out quick.

Fantastic video and very useful. I've been interested in stalking for a while now and will hopefully be joining some friends on a stalk sometime soon with the intention of investing in some equipment and qualifications a bit later down the track.

I also like the quick knockdown or Bang Flop shooting as I usually call it although I have other options the old No 4 Enfield usually gets the nod

The Model 70 is still the King of the American West. Open sights, no sissy sticks, that's hunting. One suggestion I'd have as a 5th generation ranch kid is to forego the fancy slings in favor of a $20 cotton M1 Garand sling. These can be used as a " hasty" sling to stabilize your offhand, sitting and kneeling shots. If you practice with it, you can leave the sissy sticks alone. The backpack is also a shooting aid and takes the place of shooting sticks! Your regulations are very confining, but one thing I really respect is the .243 minimum. Here in America, the AR platforms, (which disgust me and prove that class skips a generation) have a lot of very marginal hunters shooting very sketchy rifles with underpowered cartridges. On our ranch, we don't really preach our pet calibers ( mine are 30-30 Win, .243 Win, .270 Win and .300 Savage) we preach sectional density in the 240 range and muzzle velocity of about 2600- 3000 feet per second. These two criteria, along with proper construction, like the Nosler Partition assure you aren't spending any time tracking. We have a lot of private land, but a lot of public land, as well. I live on the border of a one million acre National Forest that is open for free hunting. We are very fortunate in that a poor man, probably shooting his Grandfather's gun and his ammunition, as well, always has a place to good place to hunt without paying a trespass fee, and a real chance at a trophy deer or elk.It's funny how we get spoiled, though and a lot of guys will pay to hunt our private land that borders the free space. I don't get it because I can hunt it all, but usually hunt the public. I take great pride in taking a trophy deer off land anyone can hunt.

I have a Chihuahua, I'm not convinced she'd make a good tracking dog. She'd struggle to climb out of a decently ploughed furrow.

There is the disadvantage of getting a compensator, it takes up a slot on the FAC. So if you have three slots, 2 rifles and 1 compensator, that’s your FAC full.
@andyeditprod
@andyeditprod 5 лет назад
Jan Davies that’s not how a FAC works. Apply for the rifle & mod and a slot is created for each. Want more? Apply for more. Simple.

I've a .243 coming my way next friday. I know its sort of a low mass round, and i also know its still an agreeable deer rifle at 100 grain, what i can't seem to find is at what range it starts to lose energy to the point of inneffectiveness against a white tail. Any help on this front?
@christophercharles8758
@christophercharles8758 4 года назад
Kodey Graeff Have you looked on the bullet makers website? Hornady, Federal, CCI etc... they should have a ballistic chart for your round or you can buy a hand loading manual from the manufacturer which is an encyclopaedia of all things ammunition..
@ReferenceFidelityComponents

Personally I would stick within 400yds or suggest 308 or 6.5 CM. Better still, stalk in closer as taking long range shots is not always ethical snd people rarely as good shots as they claim to be.

Michael Lygrisse work great on my 10/22. Return to zero is spot on whenever I take the scope off to use the iron sights or red dot. It's all about application. Wouldn't use them on my 6.5

Gear overload... You actually need only the rifle... the rest is just make it more British... In Finland we just shoot them damn deers from the sauna veranda (but naked of course).... Kidding aside: Grate video. For beginners I would say that lend the rifle first, buy a shotgun. Good shoes makes the tracking more pleasant. Moderator is way to go if you have money and better with good glass but better without until you have the money....
