A camp neighbor started hand feeding a fawn that got lost (I thought), but the mfer brought back friends hahaha 😂 It's a whole thing with their kids and it's been years, now we have bucks (rarely) and does. A few make winter camps! They also trim the firs which is nice and makes it "pretty". I thought it was bad at first, but they seem independent, although grateful for the food and safety. I'm still a bit worried they are "denaturing" them and their offspring, but the neighbors are happy so who am I to judge.

A high school near me kept a buck in a pen on school property. His name was Bucky (for the Buckhorn Bucks). Someone stole him one night. Several yrs later a guy was visiting a friend who had a deer head mounted in his "man room". He recognized Bucky and called county cops when he got home. It was a long while ago but I think the POS served some jail time. He committed the ultimate sin by a hunter. Bucky was Hand fed bc he was so tame. What he did isn't considered a sport. Then having him mounted is beyond dumbazz EDiT. In good fun I replied to a few doubting my tale of Bucky. RU-vid keeps deleting. Maybe I used grisly words they've banned idk. Perhaps this edit will stay up. Note this is all in the spirit of fun. One person doubted the truth of Bucky and another calls the tale of Bucky an urban legend. To both, and others only browsing thru, I say, I've lived my 68 yrs within 5 sq miles of the home I was raised in by my mom and dad, they from long lines of farm folk, and my 4 brothers lived there too. We had mostly what we needed and some of what we wanted, when our folks said it was OK to want and what. To the guy certain that the face of a buck can't be recognized several yrs later I say, You never lived on my porch attached to a home with a TV havin only 3 channels... only available when dad hollered to hold the antenna. If u whimpered out, Dad I held it last night, he told u to hush the news is on. Sitting on this porch afforded views of 180° and a huge array of wildlife. I knew where every fox den was and if any turned rabid. I knew groundhog families (my personal favorites bc they do play with cats), skunk families, raccoons (which are clever and vicious bc they ARE thieves), knew tick devouring opossum which makes em endearing, and I knew every single poisonous snake. I knew how many flocks of geese as far as my eyes could see every year and I knew which were replacements bc some missed their flight back north. I knew every owl living in each oak tree but not the years they had lived, the trees not the owls, bc the oaks had yet to fall and still haven't. I knew every hawk and if it was red tailed or another. I knew every type of bird and when they came and left and where they flew. Some I even knew how many miles they traveled. And now to deer herds hooray lol. I do know the faces of some bucks better than the face of a guy I kept (I mean dated) back in 1973. I KNOW in these herds which fawn is born to which doe and to which fawn a buck is a baby daddy, without a paternity test !! Now I can't tell you every herd for 50+ yr and if I could that might be kinda creepy but Buckys demise was 40 yrs ago and my mind then, being like a steel trap, coulda said even 7 yrs later ... YES that's him on the wall. There is no paper trail but if you pass thru here the story is known and those old enuf do remember. Here's what I admit to ... I simply know how it all went down. lol. Now if this nice guy doubts then doubt he will and doubt he may. It won't change the course of history or much else really. And to the one calling it an urban legend ? It's not one. It's a rural legend so it can't be debunked. Just ask anyone around here. I'm just happy there was an interest in Bucky and he would have been too if allowed to survive damnit. Most heartwarming of all is that no one likes the guy named Dick who robbed the world of Bucky. And that is the reason I shared this tale. You can embrace it or holler hogwash. I thank yall for the reads of a story from my home that you give no real rat's behind about. Am I right ? Enjoy your summer everyone. PS To all here who wrote so many nice replies thnx much. Really appreciated. To those who think I should write a book.... In my head I've much I want to record for my 4 grands who are my world. I want them to know how I found mine and the darkness that brought me there. That's why I write with such fondness and some longing of how it was. LOL. Every man in my family stopped hunting around 65 yrs old for the same reason. As beautiful as they are, hunting is still very important for their existence these days!

It is something to do with the beauty, and ALSO something, I promise you this as an older man who was holding his fathers hand when he died and his skin went waxy and I would never hear his voice again and he was gone from the world and I would never have him alive again and his hand went cold and I would never hold it again while I lived and ALL THAT MEMORY AND HISTORY HE KNEW OF WAS GONE FOREVER AND I couldn't do anything more for him than remember he was alive once . . . choosing never to do that to another gentle harmless being again . . . starts to be appealing.

Never had an issue if you ate what you got. But, trophy hunting just for the sake of it? Nah. Filling the freezer this way is just as valid as going to the grocery store.
