I’ve never heard the voice of god, I’ve found no trace of heaven either. Since I was spared in hell I repay the old chaplain that saved me. I spend my days with the good book, follow every chapter, prayer and verse. I spend my nights with my vices just to find some proof in the words. It's not easy to listen to your music again, but coming back to this specific song takes courage. Best hardcore/punk band right now! and best hardcore/punk band in the past 15 years in my opinion. These guys are not kids fooling around, these guys know what they're doing, they're smart, skilled, and I'm so grateful because they chose an underground genre filled with awful bands that needed someone like them to prove hardcore and punk can be great and smart music too.

Totally filled with awful bands. I stepped away from hardcore for 10 years as a result. Mostly generic stuff, this band is one of the few exceptions. By the way, checked out Beloved. Old, now defunct but amazing band with one albums before they quite, Failure On. Check it. Comeback Kid is still decent (saw them tonight) but I think I prefer their early stuff.

That's what it looks like, similar to how Lost Ground was about the beggar who the younger brother met. I was hoping to see the mother's story but at least that means that Defeater still has a side of the story they'll need to tell.

+alhaleem No. The whole 3rd album (Letters Home) is a series of letters written by the Father character in the story. No Savior is about the Father losing faith after his brother died at war.

It was just a boring album to me. It lacked the aggression and grit from Travels and Lost Ground and had a much more generic sound. It was musically much less interesting. Empty Days did to an extent as well, but it made up for it somewhat with the experimentation.

***** I can see that, but I still like it. Empty Days & Sleepless Nights is their best album imo. I don't really like Travels though. It's ok, just not that great. Every song on Lost Ground is great. This song is ok, but nothing different than all their previous work.

If you are new to Defeater, they write all of their lyrics from a first person perspective of different characters and each album reads like a narrative or personal diary of sorts of said character.

Ahhhhh that's a bummer! I wanted a "Mother" album too! I don't know why they would choose the priest... Maybe for an EP but not a full length. The LPs should be for the family members the story is actually based around.. Thats a letdown

Adam Sharpe My guess is that it will be the pastor that the younger brother goes to talk to at the end of travels in the song "cowardice." Before this came out, my bet had been on the mother, but I doubt it now.

betes51 yeah that's what i thought too. i suppose the pastor will meet the younger brother probably by the end of the new album as it happened in lost ground, where the homeless guy met the younger brother at the end of the last song (as in 'prophet in plain clothes')

Konstantin Staroverov the name of the second to last song is called atonement which in religious terms means a reparation of sin so I'm guessing that song is when the pastor talks to the younger brother and the last song is called vices and regret so I'm guessing he kills himself with his "vices" that being his drug addiction

I dig the song a lot but I really hope that this isn't how the entire record sounds sonically. Vocals are too high in the mix, guitars seem buried and too bass heavy, lack the clarity they had in the past (which is one of the many reasons that I absolutely love this band). Drums sounds huge, which is definitely fitting for Joe. Dude is an insane drummer. I really hope this is just a youtube audio issue.

I love Defeater, I love the story they've created, but honestly this is starting to get boring. This song sounds like it could've been on their last album. I love this bands aggression, but 3LPs and an EP, I was really hoping for something different. I understand this is only the first single and I shouldn't judge the whole album just yet. But I have a feeling this album is going to sound just as heavy and fast as Letters Home did. Empty Days was their best album simply because it was different. The sound was a little more raw, plus the acoustic tracks to tell the story in a different way. I'm sure the album will be intense, aggressive, and raw, but I just have a feeling it isn't going to be any different than Letters Home other than lyrically.
