Subscriber @philcollinson328 recently mentioned a "Britannia boulder of resistance" - a distant memory from schooldays - and it filled him with British pride to think that the terrain had - for once - defeated the determined efforts of the Roman occupiers. They built their Roman roads, Roman towns and Roman forts across the land. The only problem was - Phil couldn't remember where the boulder was.
In our quest for customer satisfaction, we set out to find it.
We visit the amazing Hardknott Roman fort in the Lake District to consider Roman capability. It's not just the construction of a fort in such an inhospitable place, it's also the road through the mountains.
Today, that road - Hardknott Pass - is considered the most dangerous in England and it was recently visited by BBC TV's Countryfile. If they can do it, so can we! Please note, this video does include a perilous sequence of driving up the Hardknott Pass from the Roman fort, which some viewers may find distressing.
And then, in our effort to revive the memory of Mr. Collinson, we pop over to Hadrian's Wall in Northumbria to check out Limestone Corner - where it seems the Romans were defeated by the British bedrock. Here we have a section of the wall ditch that is only half cleared.
