Defenders in the Climate Emergency: the Advisory Opinion of the IACHR 

Currently, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights is studying the request for an Advisory Opinion (AO) submitted by Colombia and Chile, which seeks to clarify the human rights obligations of States in the context of the climate emergency. This AO proceeding has garnered significant attention from civil society, international organizations, academia, and communities impacted by the climate crisis. For the first time in an advisory proceeding, the Court received an unprecedented number of written submissions, and hundreds are expected to attend the hearings convened as part of this process.
This side event provides an excellent opportunity to delve into various amicus briefs that gather arguments, practices, and concrete cases on how to advance in guaranteeing access rights and facilitating the work of human rights defenders in the context of the climate emergency.
