True to its title, "The Story Begins" introduces the audience to the Defenders of The Earth's colorfully animated cast of characters.
It is Flash Gordon, whose spaceship crashes near Mandrake and Lothar's mansion, who tells us of evil Ming's plan to destroy the earth. In addition to being panicked over Ming's plans for the destruction of earth, he is anguished over the well-being of his wife and son Rick whom he was forced to leave behind.

I remember watching this as an 11 year old back in 1985 on our one and only TV Station on the island of Trinidad. Back then, DOE was part of an all star Saturday morning cartoon block that ran from 8-11am. Those were the good old days that had children's shows that were far better than the junk of today that is playing a key part in corrupting young minds.

Aaah. I remember this cartoon so well. One of my favourites. I tried reading the comics online of each character online and the only one that stuck was "The Phantom" still my favourite to this day.

Before the time that AKOM took over animation duties. They were foisted on Transforners at first, with GI Joe and everything else spared. AKOM is considered pretty decent animating Simpsons.

I love this i can't believe i totally forgot this amazing show during my childhood. It's amazing how much life changes when you grow up we forget the simplest things that makes us happpy .some how i totally forget how amazing this cartoon series was. In the comic strip he went to a magic school (howarts style) that his father run, also he has an evil twin brother called Derek and a wife called Narda, which is a princess who can use magic as well.

Mandrake is a magician. He knows lots of stuff and is an old friend of Gordon. Remember that Gordon is an Earthling.

@@grumblekin none of that was established in the first episode..you can't just assume the viewers would have read the comics and will know all the character's back stories. This series wasn't a follow up to the comics anyway, it was it's own thing.

So many old shows about being better people and selfless and honorable. Now we have kids growing up wanting to be triggered or their feelings hurt. Back then we dreamed of being Super friends, or Space Ghost or another action hero. Now they shave their heads, and talk about how someone sneezing around them triggers something. What is a trigger any way? Is it like getting butthurt? I thought we were taught "Sticks and Stones,,,,"!
