Cheng gets a lot of shit for her options and her 'attitude', but I've always liked watching her play! This is a fun insight into her growth as a player too, nice to hear her admitting she used it too much in the past and has been working on balancing aggression vs forcing the option. Good luck to her and Hughes!

Interesting to hear that Jordan uses a 4-point grading scale for passing. Indoor uses a 3-point scale based on how many options the setter has (either all 3, 2 for no middle option, and 1 for forced to either pin or forced to tip).

Really love this video especially the use of the 2003 clip to validate the history of the on 2 option. It might’ve been a bit too edgy or idealistic, but might’ve been cool for you guys to touch on the lingering double standard in beach volleyball. Specifically that Kelly Cheng used to get criticized and borderline hated on for the on 2 option but miles partain’s meteoric rise was largely due to the same technique. As far as I’m aware, he’s never really been criticized for it at nearly the same level. And especially looking at the Swedish team of ahman and helvig it can be challenging to hear praise for how they have “leveled up the game of beach volleyball” and “forced players to evolve” because of the same play that Kelly Cheng was historically criticized for. I’d be curious to see if she or even miles has an opinion on that. Great video like always!

I'm not sure I'd say it's a double standard, I think people just find Cheng more unlikable than Miles or the Swedes.

I don't see many option pokes/short balls from Partain. He and the Swedes take a full swings.

I do not mind taking the ball over on two. If you and your partner are on the same page and aren't getting them out of rhythm, go as often as you want. I think the difference you aren't including in this comparison is that Miles (Swedish even before him) "leveled up" the game because he is bettering both his teams on-2 and on-3 attack by forcing the blocker to take away his hard swing on-2 and then still setting his partner and giving them an open net or at minimum a predictable and less potent block to contend with. Kelly's will she option over or not isn't as disruptive to the defense. It's still a very good attack whenever she utilizes it but its not an equal comparison to the men's.

I loved the part where Kelly shares how they keep track of their option success conditional on the pass. Nice fodder to help amateurs nerding out on beachvolley, too. Very much appreciated. Plus, very healthy dose of a clip. More informative than shorts and more digestable than the massive amount of quality content the community puts up on RU-vid these days.

Love the option! Those who dislike it don't have the skillset to pull it off. To her point, those will have to adapt if they want to compete. It's like when curry introduced the 3pointer, he changed how the game works and it's working!

I remember EY using the on2 at the Athens olympics so has been done for ages so i don't know why Kelly is getting so much shit for it?🤷‍♀️ also the Australians mfay & T have been doing it forever and i havent heard them get any hate for it🤔
