In this video, I bring my beautiful niece to the session and we show why I choose to use off camera flash (OCF) for my portrait work. When I was really coming into my own with my photography, I wanted my work to be distinct. I chose to use OCF to help define the look in my portraits. I use it in most all of my work, including my dance work. It allows my photos to look consistent in color and style across the board.
By using OCF, I can control the light and shadows rather than just taking what I'm given with the natural light. I could possible use a reflector in my work, but you get more consistent control using a light source like a strobe.

How is an ad200 lighting this from that distance with high speed sync. 1/1 power settings for sure. with a small light like that the distance matters a lot. I would place is as close to her as i can get it (using 1/2 or 1/4 power would hep with recycle times) and probably wouldnt use the grid outdoors. Great work Jason keep it up. What are you using to film your videos? Phone?

I’m using the OSMO pocket 3 for the video. Yes, you’re right. I probably should put the light closer to her. That may be more because I’m use to using the 600 and just didn’t think of bringing it closer. Great feedback on that. I was sitting between full and 1/4 power. As for recycle, it wasn’t really an issue. I never had any misfires due to recycle time.

Do you have a favorite playlist you like to play during your senior sessions? I think I'm going to incorporate that into my sessions this year. Thanks.

I let my clients pick. It’s been mostly T.Swift all of 2023.

Back in those film days when I was shooting portraiture one of the things I would always push was straighten/arch the back. Even in situations where there was the knees up and leaning forward, still tuck that back in. It made so much of a difference. Subtle, but profound at the same time.

I’m starting out and a question I always have is what is your white balance? Usually flash shoots at 5600k right? So what if the sun is setting and it’s warmer. Do you just eyeball it? Thanks

I shoot raw and adjust in post

Great video. I don’t have the AD200 but I do have the nifty little AD100 and on days like that I’ve used it successfully to add enough of my own light to make me happy. Cool location, what time of day was it - looks like a ghost town?

We were there at 930 on a Wednesday morning. Yes. Most the shops there are empty. It seems like it’s always been that way long before COVID. Not sure why.

Good info great shots. I also have the EF 135 F/2 love it. One question regarding the c-stand. Any particular reason why use the portable tripod dolly and not the traditional c-stand wheels?

They were what I found on Amazon. No other reason.

Good video as always Jason. Quick question : why did you decide to switch to the 135?
@J.Allen_Photography
@J.Allen_Photography 7 месяцев назад
Because the long sidewalk was screaming for a long lens. I love the 135mm. It’s got gorgeous color and warmth and I just wanted to give it some time on the camera.

@@J.Allen_Photography I am new subscribers of your channel today. I love your work. I want to shoot until grow older. But I use Olympus m3 with msuiko Len. How do you remark crop frame sensor for Carrier.? In my mind I want to go FF. But I have been invested so much in Olympus lens for 4 Lens. Your opinion please

@yourvitamin9474 I say create with what you have. As you continue to grow as a photographer and get better, maybe you’ll outgrow your current gear. Buy lenses that maybe you can use both on a crop sensor and full frame, that way you don’t have to double dip on lenses.

In the overcast shots, it seems like you get a little more contrast in your lighted shots than with the natural light, at least in those cloudy conditions……….

Yes. Using the strobe give more vibrancy and color.

Because I can expose better for the background and use the light to expose for my model.
