YEAH!...I knew other High School dudes that were metal heads like me...that ADMITTED...Duran Duran were worth a listen. Of course, back then, we knew good musicians when we heard them, and could tell they worked at playing their instruments...including the hardest of all to play...the VOCAL FOLDS.
what is the point of recommending a great song for these 2? they never seem to really acknowledge a song's greatness. Naked baby is in the video, not the song, Geez!
POP music actually rocked and was played on instruments, unlike, Mariah, Britney, Katy, Jlo, Nikki, Beyonce, Gag, biebs, snoop, jayz, and all the rest of those shitty artists.
Dude, I don't think it's a secret anymore. 😉 Given my love of the many stripes of The Metal, I could also be characterized as a "Metal-Head", but I prefer to think of myself as a Musical Omnivore.😁
John Taylor is just a great bassist! The bass lines for songs like Rio are incredibly funky and complex and he still does little tutorials on RU-vid on how to play those bass lines. Plus he was the bassist on Band Aid's classic "Do They Know It's Christmas."
If you haven't seen The Power Station as the musical guests on SNL February 16, 1985 I'd highly recommend it. Used to have the performance recorded on VHS. John on bass Robert Palmer vocals and Andy Taylor guitar playing Get It On (Bang a Gong) wicked performance. Actually found both performances at Internet Archive 2nd song was Some Like It Hot. Use the title *The Power Station SNL 1985* and you'll be able to view/download both performances if you're interested cheers.
Trying to analyze "new wave" or for that matter any 80s music is like trying to hold water in your fist. There really is no hard and fast answer to the lyrics or music. One of the reasons i love it so much ;)

This is what 1983 sounded like. Don't try to read too much into the nonsense lyrics or artsy progressive video. This is my absolute FAVORITE Duran Duran track :)
"Planet Earth" from Duran Duran is next. Duran Duran was a poppy alternative, new wave/post-punk band. Their videos are going to be weird. lol. '80s was during The Cold War, too. So you see a little bit of that on this video. The tucked in tie thing was a style back then. Song is about relationship issues.
Tucking the tie into the shirt was popular with the US Army during WW2. Duran Duran were fashion leaders and wanted to show a look of their own. Never caught on.
This song was the STELLAR opener for their concert in Seattle, WA circa 1985 or so. I was there and they all jumped out together and blew the ROOF off. They are SO good live. This was all about dance and fashion. The tucked tie was all about fashion. Duran Duran were pop, great dance music and fashion. They are known as the second British Invasion. They were just honored at the Rock and Roll hall of Fame. They were just AWESOME! Thanks for this on a COLD Friday here North of Seattle. All my love to you both!
I noticed that the shirt had epaulets, and the tucked tie reminds me of the old khaki Army uniforms where the soldiers would tuck the tie the same way, so I figure this was a bit of military-inspired fashion. (Remember how popular camouflage patterns were in the 80s? lol)
The tie is a late 70’s early 80’s thing. Used to do the same thing when I was a school in the same period. Long, thin and tuck it in to your shirt. It was cooler than using a tie pin.
The video was partly a collection of earlier videos combined with new surreal imagery. Some of their clothing even seems to be inspired by the early Beatles look in the moves "Hard Days Night" and "Help". (Duran Duran was called "second Beatles" by many in the music media at this point in their career. In essence it's a song about a guy who feels like something is wrong with his relationship... he can sense it, but he doesn't know quite what's wrong. GUYS... how many times have you asked your girlfriend/wife "what's wrong" and she looks away and says..."Oh... nothing". Right there... all men know something is wrong, even though we are clueless of what it could be. The imagery of spy's and investigators can be interpreted in Simon trying to figure out what is wrong. The baby and toddler can be interpreted as the man being as clueless and innocent as a child in regards to what the heck his woman really wants. In the end, its a tale as old as our species. Men just sometimes will never understand a woman, her subtle hints, what's bothering her, or what she really wants... We are all like children lost in the woods trying to weave our way through the complex maze of a woman's emotions. Just tell us what the heck you want ladies! We're not that complex... lol :)
Duran Duran would have some older video scenes added to their videos throughout their history on various song videos. However, the collection you reference is a very, very small snippet of a view scenes of older videos in the film.
Duran Duran was a band I reflexively despised as a teenager during their heyday in the 80s, simply because of their appearance. But it seems every passing year makes me appreciate them more (although I admit, a lot of that might be because unlike then, I don't consume all my music through MTV). Just an excellent overall sound with great vocals and bass, and a broad enough repertoire that all of their songs don't sound the same while keeping a distinct style. Funnily enough, my favorite of their songs is probably "Come Undone", released well past their period of peak popularity (1993).
_TOTALLY!_ HATED them especially when they ponced around on that yacht with all the shoulder pads and makeup. My mates were really into them so I got to hear some of the less pop non-hit stuff they did and the first thing that stood out to my classic rock ear was the great guitar - overall production was top notch and they were super tight. Great poetry and Lebon has some vocal chops in the studio. _Lonely In Your Nightmare_ stands out and of course _Ordinary World_ much later on ......
I didn't realize until now, probably because I've not thought of this song in 40 years, but it sounds like it was "inspired" by David Bowie's Young Americans
The tucked tie is a copy of the military of WWII . Many officers that fought in the war would tuck their ties in their shirt to prevent the tie from getting caught on a machine that could possibly kill them.
Music videos back then were just creative...it was a new art form and Duran Duran were the kings of music videos. Lyrics sometimes didn't make much sense either or were tricky to understand like some poetry. Duran Duran just played on Dick Clark's New Year show and were just inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Still making albums and touring on sold out arenas around the world.
Duran Duran's fashion style back in the 80s were revolutionary. The style was called New Romantics. In this video the ties were tucked in and it was all the rage back then for them, Spandau Ballet, ABC, and Human League. You should also check out Rio or Planet Earth. Two videos that show their sense of fashion.
Duran Duran to me was always about escapism, ability and groove. As black South London teenager in the late 80s . I was listening to American bands like Cameo, Ohio Players, Slave etc British groups such as Incognito, Freeez, Light of World, Police etc, etc. Duran wherea funky, glamorous group that gave you hope a dream. Although i liked rock music, jeans and t-shirts didn’t really inspire me fashion wise. Duran had everything looks, they could play, the videos showed a lifestyle that i and many of my friends could only dream about. They where Birmingham lads done well. I don’t think they got the recognition they deserved because of the image they had. I vividly remember working in a factory in purley way Croydon and everyday around the same time Girls on film would be blasting from a little radio. That would make my day . Music to me is about emotions but at the time to me a budding bassist it had to be inspirational. I want that life, i want those clothes, i want a model girlfriend, i want my own magazine. Duran had it all .
This song finds Simon Le Bon singing about a girl that is driving him crazy as he feels there is something wrong with their relationship. He tells her she's as easy as a "Nuclear War."
Simon Le Bon has never expressed what the song is about and he rarely ever does about the vast majority of his lyrics. You are the third person in this post stating the same verbiage about the song. You must have read this on someone's post about their interpretation of the song on the internet because it is not Le Bon's words.
My favorite band ever! I even have a Duran Duran tattoo. They were just inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. Seen them several times and their shows always sell out!
Everyone is right. It’s a lot of clips of their older videos included in this new video. (Planet Earth, Save a Prayer, etc). It was a huge song and one of my favorites! Hint for 80s videos…don’t look for literal meaning, look for art and style in the videos. Often the song lyrics have little to do with the artistic video. These guys, like many British New Wave artists, were art school students. Lyrics aren’t literal, they’re poetry or sounds that make meaning…half the time they don’t even make sense but they SOUND good. It’s like musical paint.
This band made such fun songs and videos. They were very popular in the 80's,and I enjoyed their music, but I never took tham all that seriously. Still, they set themselves apart from other British groups because they were very talented.
Give 'Save A Prayer' a try. I think you guys will like it. I come back to it every so often, and I always have to listen to it multiple times. One of Duran Duran's most haunting songs. It's almost like having a religious experience.
In the UK it was a non-album single. In the US, Is There Something I Should Know? was added to the re-release of Duran Duran's debut album as track 5 on the album. The track To The Shore was removed from the original album and replaced with ITSISK?
With Christmas upon us, Brad and Lex MUST react to "Band Aid's" ( a UK/Irish collaboration of pop/rock giants ) great video to raise money for Africans in need. Simon Le Bon - lead singer with Duran Duran is featured in the video as are Boy George, Sting, Phil Collins etc
Duran Duran was to teen girls in the 80s what the Beatles were to teen girls in the 60s. Duran Duran concerts were loaded with adolescent females, teens to 20s. But don't be fooled. Guys liked them just as much, they were just embarrassed to admit it. Duran Duran was unfairly categorized as a boy band initially, but became obvious soon that there was legit musical talent in the band. They are one of the few 80s pop bands that survived well into the 90s.
Hey, Brad & Lex! Watching this on Christmas Day 🤩🎄 Happy holidays to you both! I’m a long time Duran Duran fan (even though I’m 37, lol), and I rarely can decipher their meanings. I love the way Simon (lead singer) looks when he sings “baby don’t goooo” 😅😅 You should react to New Moon On Monday; what is a “lizard mixture”? 🧐
Oh oh, oh, oh people stare and cross the road from me oh oh, And jungle drums they all clear the way for me Can you read my mind can you see in the snow And firey deamons all dance when you walk through that door Don't say you're easy on me you're about as easy as a nuclear war There's a dream that strings the road with broken glass for us to hold And I cut so far before I had to say Please please tell me now is there something I should know Is there something I should say that'll make you come my way Do you feel the same cause you don't let it show
the video appears random, but yes - innocence seems to be a theme -- the song is about a woman he's in a relationship with, and she's giving him grief somehow, and he feels clueless, and he wants to know if she's just playing him for a fool - she threatens him even as he desires her - is she going to dump him, or just let him dangle while she plays the field? I seem to remember that after the disco era, when people took each other to bed based on a chance encounter in a club, there was a lot of heartbreak and unintended pregnancies and VD - so after the careless loving comes the rueful consequences -- good analysis, though, you guys are getting down into it
Le Bon's never expressed what the song is about. He rarely does. However- Nice interpretation you have but I believe the song has more to do with a relationship with drugs than about with a woman.
The baby, and a few of the other clips that look more out of context than the strangeness off this video, are from their older videos. Kind of subliminal visuals to Planet Earth and some earlier singles. This song came out after their smash hit album RIO but was placed on their first to bolster album sales in The States. Planet Earth and Girls On Film were single from their first album that also gained more notoriety after the RIO album.
Once upon a time, if a guy was wearing a tie without a jacket, he tucked in the tie so it wouldn't whip around. There were also tie clips to clip the tie to the shirt. These were often nice pieces of jewelry for men.
I've come to appreciate Duran Duran in my older years. When I was growing up they were seen in many quarters as a bit of a heart throb group for the young girlies which more than likely put me off of them but Le Bon has a very good singing voice no doubt about it along with enough catchy tunes they put out.
To Brad, many videos in the 80s (especially Duran Duran's) were just a display of artistry. Eye candy to draw the viewer into the song, not necessarily to fit the lyrics from a literal sense.
It is called being smart dressed simple as that, tucking your tie into your shirt stopped it moving about if you were active or if eating stopping it ending up in your food. It would seem not only smartness is less now so is common sense.
Duran Duran was a huge part of my childhood and moving to a new city at 8 yrs old and having my own room... man! I decorated my walls with posters from their next album Seven and the Ragged Tiger. Anyway, there's a clip of a video, in this video, of another great song of theirs.. Save A Prayer!! Loved that song as a child then learned later it's about a prostitute 😂 Check it out !
The 1980s music videos didn't necessarily tell a story nor have anything to do with the song lyrics. Sometimes they did but often they were done by some weirdo fresh out of film school thinking they were genius. And the bands often had little say in how the videos were produced.
