Is it correct to think Nick's conversation with Imogen is like a "soft launch" coming out? He says everything except overtly that he's gay, but I think she understands that's what he's saying. And then when she tells the lads "We're just going to be friends; I think I can do better," she's actually intentionally pulling focus from Nick, because she gets that he's not ready to handle it, and she is ACTUALLY being an ally for him.

I so agree with this! Most programmes drag things out and add in so much drama that I was fully expecting in ‘kiss’ that Charlie was going to misunderstand the situation with nick and Tara so end up kissing Ben to make him self feel better and then when nick realised that Charlie was missing and because he was confused about his feelings, I thought he would end up kissing Imogen. So many programmes do this kind of thing just to add drama and drag out a relationship, so I think I’ve been conditioned to expect it . It Was so lovely to see it be less complicated. Although nick wasn’t sure ‘what he was’, he never appeared to doubt his feelings for Charlie.

@@HollyFreddie123 Exactly! The character actually communicate! Except for Charlie & Tao - they should've had a long talk earlier in the show! I was afraid Charlie would go back to Ben just know where he stood in the relationship. Like Nick, I was proud of Charlie for standing up for himself. He consistently told Ben "No" and stuck to it. Models of good/healthy relationships are hard to find. Nick's honesty with Imogen allows her to be happy for him at the end - she knew for sure that he had been honest with her.

: That's exactly what I have been saying to people. I'm straight so I'm just guessing (tell me if I'm wrong) but I've noticed that unfortunately people are usually feeling much more awkward around gay couples when they're men because I think they are picturing the relationship as maybe sort of "brutal" ? Like with society still very inclined to have boys be "strong" and "not emotional" and all that crap. And that's what I found beautiful in this show, showing that, goddamnit, boys can also behave in a romantic, dork way, showing their feelings, doubting themselves, without it making them lesser boys.

@@gaelledelair7258 I disagree I think in general gay mens relationships (especially white men) are a bit more mainstream than lesbian ones. People even struggle to say the word lesbian because it’s been so heavily fetishized and turned into something “made to pleasure men” women who are in relationships with other women will inherently be less respected due to the patriarchy and misogyny. In no way am I saying that gay men to not face discrimination, the entire lgbt community does and we should in general try not to compare. But I felt the need to comment this as a wlw (woman who loves women) bc it’s an important aspect to look at. This is the first time I’ve seen a lesbian couple in highschool in a tv show. Or even in a movie. And it’s one of the very few times I’ve heard the word “lesbian” used in a non derogatory way on tv. But again I am in NO WAY trying to diminish the things that other people go through because in many ways the discrimination of lgbt individuals are very personal and in no way comparable to one another.

When I talk about homosexuality, people always seem more tolerant with lesbians than gays and when I'm trying to make them face their incoherence (because like, if you don't mind lesbians why would you mind gays ? Or any other sexuality for that matter) they always justify it with something on the line of "It's prettier to see". "Prettier" actually meaning "sexier", "sexier" for men, so I get your point. However it is true that gay couples tend to be more represented, maybe because again, society doesn't feel the need to represent lesbians since it's associated with male fantasies

plus, he's fifteen and had to see his best friend being bullied and not being able to do anything about it but just be there for him, the audience only gets annoyed because we know how nice and genuine Nick is, Tao has a preconception of him because of the guys who bullied Charlie the other year

And Tao not knowing, but only seeing the repercussions as Charlie's BF, he's extra protective and vigilant since this has happened before. Unfortunately there is no context for this in the show, but since Alice was also the author of the comic AND the show, his motivations are still the same.

yeah, i think because we as an audience see how wonderful nick is, it's easy to forget that tao really doesn't have the same perspective of him at all. tao is quick to judge, yes, but he also doesn't have much to go off of?? and the times he /has/ seen nick, he's willingly hanging out with bullies and doesn't reaaaally stand up for either charlie or tao when his friends go after them, at least not to the same extent as tao does. based on that alone it's at least somewhat understandable why tao acts the way he does, and that's not even touching on possible abandonment issues and how protective he is of especially charlie and anything else he might have going on

Yep. Imogen's only real "crimes" were cluelessness and awkwardness.😆 She just genuinely likes Nick! She was brave enough to go for it. She ultimately took the rejection really well. I kind of hope she's still around as Nick's friend next season.

I love Tao, I relate to him the most. He says all the things out loud that I'd just think to myself quietly. He's not super mature about things but I can 100% understand and relate to how he feels.

Personally I can relate to his fear of his friend group falling apart because I as someone who's ace I always felt like I as a regular friend became second choice the second a friend entered a relationship without me being able to "have the same thing" due to being ace if that makes sense? So imo it doesn't even need a tragic backstory. But for story telling reasons it's likely that there's more behind it

I said to my friend during her first watch (my 7th rewatch lmao) that she embarrassed herself trying to get Nicks attention at the party and thought she did something (by celebrating with her friends after she tells Nick) and instead he went upstairs and made out with a boy lol

Well, she didn't stand a chance not because she's a girl (Nick is bi, remember) but because she wasn't Charlie.

But she turns into a good friend

LATE SPOILER~ISH ..... Well that what makes it so better that there is a potential female love interest in season 2

I mean...they dont know for sure it was Tao who outed him...but he WAS talking kinda loudly and excitedly about it in the school halls one morning...and then the rumours started to spread....so they just kinda assume it might have been THAT moment that caused ppl to know Charlie is gay. But there's no definitive answer in the comics...just speculation. But yeah, you can read the comic for free on Webtoon or Tapas or Tumblr and find out the backstory a bit more yourself. Because yeah, they do go slightly more in-depth about how bad the bullying actually was for Charlie. It caused his mental health to get very very very bad. And so Tao doesn't want that to happen again.

@@sushi_donut there can be more than one reason you know, yes he's protective over charlie but there could be other underlying reasons too. he literally said in the show "i don't know why i'm so scared of being alone", which could indicate him having some type of abandonment issue. that doesn't negate the reasons for his behaviour that is stated in the comics, it just adds more to it and creates more character depth

@@sushi_donut I'm not sure that the thing about outing Charlie will carry on to the show. I have nothing against it, but I feel like I'm the show Alice is expanding Tao's character, and changing his motivations. He feels much more scared of being alone in TV than he seems in the comic. And he already knows about them way before Paris. But I'm sure whatever Alice is planning for the future of the show will be something beautifully heartwarming(and equally heartbreaking)

@@sushi_donut This is not canon in the show (yet) and in the comic it's also speculation on the part of the characters. It's not actually confirmed Tao did anything.

But you can tell the character of a person by witnessing their actions. Nick slowly, but surely is willing to go the extra mile for Charlie. So Tao in a way is ignoring the effort Nick is making. Ben refused to even acknowledge Charlie, Nick is starting to be around Charlie and his friends.

@@zyxwh185 amén! I love nick but people act like he probably wasn’t present at least in one of this situations where his friends bullied or said ugly things. We all know that they are teenager and it’s not easy, but a lot of people paint Nick as a perfect person but can’t see the real intentions of Tao. The actor who play nick do a good job showing that part of Nick feels guilty about putting Charlie in situations like that or just exposing their prejudice now since he have a personal relationship with him.

@@TheKuroSheep None of that excuses Tao's possessive and petty behavior. To name just a couple of his "greatest hits": He has no excuse for attacking Nick when he had turned his back, particularly when the person who had actually attacked Tao was right there within throwing distance too, or for the extremely low blow that was telling Charlie that everything was his fault. This self-proclaimed "good friend" is using Charlie's perceived need for protection to mask his own deep insecurities. Tao is a well written character, but definitely not someone I'd like to have around in real life, unless they chilled the f**k down.

@@naiderl Everything you wrote was my first impression of Tao as a character. But here's the thing - that age is rough for pretty much everyone and he considers his friends the only anchor in his world that isn't changing. I'd really like to see Tao learn to value himself as an individual without needing to live through his friends but honestly I can relate with that age.
