Very nice video and very informative, thanks. I am considering orchids for the first time. Your channel really helps.

I recognise that New Zealand Sphagnum moss. But do many people know where New Zealand is? I do I live here. A great little country. Great video thanks.

Lol at least I do. When I was 2 or 3 yo my family went there. Well, I don’t remember a thing unfortunately but at least that makes me aware of where it is. I wanna visit one day.

You will find a heavy brown paper bag will handle broken glass more successfully than thin plastic. When I deal with broken glass that is what I use, and it always seems to work.

That makes sense! Thank you very much. I will do that next time! Thank you for watching!

Cool! Good luck with that! Make sure to acclimate the seedlings to your condition over at least a week.

Flasks are something I definitely need practice with. My attempts so far have been horrible failures. I wonder if you could use a can of compressed air, as for keyboard cleaning, to dry the leaves/crown?

Interesting idea. I bet it would. I blow on them to shake of water... anyway, yeah, some seedlings out of flasks don’t make it for sure... plugs are way easier to deal with.

It will take years until it’s blooming size right? I don’t have the patience 😂 I have some seedlings and the wait is too long.

Lol I know! I have lots of seedlings as my collection also! These are not really for personal collection though. I list them on my eBay (unfortunately USA only)... at this point, I haven’t paid any money out of my pocket to get new orchids and supplies for at least half year!

Plant s And other things wow. That’s so cool. I need to start selling to pay for more plants. 😂

I’ve ordered some plugs, I may be in over my head. Lol. If they come in with that plug foam around them would you suggest leaving that foam plug on for the first potting then when the up potting is needed remove that foam core? Or should I remove the foam core at this first potting up? Thanks Yoshi

I always take plugs off no matter when. I never had problems with it off.

@@orchidsbythelake thanks Yoshi. You know I searched for. Hours on the internet and never found that answer or any answer on the foam plugs. Glad you have first hand knowledge. Thanks friend. I’m going to try some Dendrobiums from Carmellas

I was surprised that you put so much moss in the pot with the tiny plants. In my set-up they'd stay wet for ages so I would have used more free-draining material - at least half the pot - and only enough moss to cover the roots. I'd guess you live somewhere much warmer than England.
@orchidsbythelake

Rockdoc2174 not really. Seattle, Washington area. It is zone 8b. Rather it should be close to yours??? Anyway, I also have my fans running 24/7... the room is kinda warm though... if you think about it, when you buy an orchid (especially phals), the “plug” in the middle have so much moss compacted... that’s kinda the idea. And later, the com-pot, i our lava rocks to control the amount of moss....

Plant s And other things your weather should be quite close to ours, though I'd guess your winters are colder than ours. We have the Gulf Stream keeping our temperatures higher than they would be otherwise. I keep my plants on windowsills and in our conservatory so I don't control conditions closely. The orchids have to take what they're given! I was interested by your video because I have some Cattleya seedlings to deflask this year and was looking for info from other people.
@orchidsbythelake

Rockdoc2174 nice! Cattleya types seem easier going in my experience. I would be looking forward to your video for that! Let me know if you have more questions. If I can’t answer, my friend, “boss” from Olympic Orchids can answer.

Plant s And other things thanks for the offer. I've shown the flask to friends at the East Midlands Orchid Society and have been advised to leave it alone until June so they'll be as warm as possible when they first see the real world. I'd like them to be a bit bigger because they've been in this flask almost a year so I don't know how much nutrition is left in the agar. I bought the flask last March from the Writhlington School ( wsbeorchids.org/about-the-writhlington-orchid-project/ ) stall at a show. You could pay a nominal amount and be shown how to reflask very young seedlings so I have ended up with quite a few plants in the jar. Some have stout roots but none is much more than 25mm high. They are supposed to be Cattleya tenebrosa so I want to see at least one flower.

Rockdoc2174 oh yes. You wanna leave them as long as you can! Longer you wait, better chance surviving after deflask... but also there are some chance that they just get brown when you leave them in too long... decisions, decisions...
