This song perfectly blends Chino’s and Maynard’s voices together. To me, this song is haunting and sexy at the same time, both lyrically and instrumentally.

As to answer the insight behind the making of this song: Lead singer Chino Moreno (on Maynard's appearance): "Having Maynard perform on the record wasn't something that we planned on doing. We didn't plan on having any guest on the record. But being a fan of Tool and A Perfect Circle, once Maynard was involved, it was just a magical thing for us. Honestly, when he first started working with us, he wasn't supposed to sing with us. He was just working on the arrangements, riff structures, time signatures, and things like that. I don't know if you're a big fan of Tool's music, but they're really mathematical. I've been to their rehearsal space, and there's this big chart that just looks like calculus--the way they write songs, it's just crazy. It was good to have someone else who has different ways of writing songs, 'cause everyone has a different way of doing it. He came in and we started working on this one song in particular, and he just grabbed the microphone and started singing along to it, and my jaw just dropped. All of a sudden our band sounded like Tool; it was just crazy. Then, probably two months later, we went in to record the album, and I went in to record the vocals on it, and I just kept hearing his voice, this re-occurring melody with his voice coming over it. So I called him and asked him if he wanted to come down and sing on the record, and he had no problem with it. Once he came in, I gave him sort of what I wanted the song to be about, and he wrote a couple of ideas down, and the next day he came in with all the lyrics written all out with blank spaces where my lyrics were supposed to be. He's very professional like that. He wants everything set perfectly, which is the complete opposite to the way that I write, so it was cool. And then I went in and did my vocals over it, and it just seemed that our voices blended together pretty good. Yeah, it came out pretty good, so we decided to put it on the record."

The ringer did an oral history for the 20th anniversary of white pony and this was said of the passenger recording session Moreno: When we were in L.A., [Tool’s Maynard James Keenan] was writing and recording with A Perfect Circle. “Passenger” was probably one of the last songs I recorded vocals on, and I mentioned to him something about getting up on it. He was like, “Yeah, sure.” He came by the studio, and it was just me, him, and Terry was in there at the board. We had a pad of paper, two pens, and we’d play the song. I wrote the first line, “Here I lay,” then I gave him the pad. He wrote the second line, “Still and breathless,” then I take the pad back … boom boom boom. It was a pretty organic collaboration. It wasn’t like, “Oh, I wanna get the guy from Tool on the record.” It was someone I was hanging out with a lot, sharing a lot with. We were both in the writing state then. The way that we wrote, line by line, was a pretty rad way to collaborate, especially these days when it’s over the internet or whatever. Being in that moment, in the same room, was really something special

from what chino said in an interview maynard was never supposed to be on the track. he was only there to help write the melodies. but randomly maynard just started singing to it so they knew he needed to be featured on the track.

Chino has said about this song that they had this track and he heard Maynard in his head as the other melody. Asked MJK to sing and he was game. He came in and grabbed the mic and started singing and Chino reaction was "holy shit we sound like tool!" Probably not the most popular, but favorite Deftones song “Minerva” just so different emotionally but artistic AF. Rah!!!! Next up “Diamond Eyes” creepy video too. I think that’s their heaviest song in my opinion.

The process for this song was Chino invited Maynard to help with album,Maynard heard track & laid down the vocals-then later Chino added his. Chino told Maynard the premise-flavor of the song he was thinking of making-Maynard being him,put it down. Chino never thought Maynard was going to sing on the album-just help with his expertise.

Man I don't know if you've listened to these but they are essential Deftones joints. These are those headbangers. Engine no.9, minus blindfold, headup, and people can hate as much as they want on "back to school" but it's dope as fuck. He spits straight fire on all those tracks. They are the best of the best.
