DEFTONES singer Chino Moreno 2010 interview about nu metal and vocal influences | Raw & Uncut 

Hey since so many are commenting asking: this is an older interview (you'll see it says 2010 in the description). It's part of a series on our channel where we release interviews done for our documentaries and TV series that haven't been seen before. This is from the Nu Metal episode of Metal Evolution. Which is why there are mostly questions about nu metal. Only a few soundbytes were included in the actual show, and we thought Deftones fans would like to hear his full answers. We'd be happy to interview Chino about his newer music the next time we get that chance!

Deftones are from the very few bands that are actually phenomenal in their evolution as musicians.

Chino is a ridiculously unique vocalist. He can sing you to sleep and scream you awake, like Peter Steele or Mike Patton.

I love that Chino talks so passionately about his influences...so many frontmen/women shy away from being honest about that...as if they created their sound out of thin air... He obviously hate the 'NuMetal' tag but he still answers it honestly without shitting on any other band mentioned. Deftones fucking rule

I'm so glad they went the route they did. They're a mainstream band but they're basically an underground band..shits weird but so amazing.

Deftones imo were honestly the best out of the bunch of nu-metal bands, half because they saw the trend was dying and evolved past it.

It's so refreshing seeing Chino sober, I'm glad for him, he's lived all sides of life but now he's living the best part of it.

Brilliant band and every album is different and more importantly good. They will always try to evolve. Chino is a brilliant vocalist.

Deftones rule, they have such a unique and wide-ranging sound.

I think anyone who loves metal, can appreciate the Deftones. They are so unique and different to anything else. People hate ''Nu Metal'' but no one hates on the Dtones because they are their own thing,

This guy wrote one of the best lyrics and all their albums sounded differently over the years in a good way. Korn or limp bizkit had nothing close to that. Even after listening to all thrash metal, death metal and black metal stuff which I'm into this days more then ever I will always say deftones is my favorite band which I've been into for the last 18 years.

DEFTONES ALBUMS are like seeds you plant them and they fucking GROOWW INTO A BIG BADASS FUCKING SOUND TRACK OF YOUR LIFE ...GORE LITERALLY IS ALMOST FLAWLESS WHEN JUMP BACK INTO THE SONGS just like everything they do..

You have the front man of one of the most original sounding band, and you are asking him about limp bizkit?

I'm glad they released Back to School. It's the song that I first heard when I was in middle school. Without them making that compromise, I wouldn't have found their stuff for a while. Long live Deftones.

I've always been a Chino and Deftones fan. I never saw a problem with them wanting to be separate from that Nu Metal thing. I personally hate all the little tags, and genre crap myself. I think dope music is dope music, and Chino delivers dope shit spanning over a few 'genres.'

Love that chino wears his love of FNM and Patton on his sleeve. They are severely overlooked in modern discussion of experimental rock/metal, and deserve so much recognition for how ahead of the curve, and amazing they were.

I personally ive NEVER seen Deftones as nu metal, i see them more like post hardcore in vein of Helmet or Jawbox mixed with metal and experimental tendencies. They only got lumped in because of how they looked honestly.

one of the things that stood out to me in this interview is when he said “we were invited to play spring break but we declined because we didn’t feel we’re a spring break band” knowing well enough it would’ve blown them up more, a lot of respect for that in sticking to who they are as a band instead of getting hungry for more fame, i’m glad it worked out well in the end because they have a huge and amazing fanbase

It's not fair to insist so much in comparing Deftones with Korn and Limp Bizkit. You can see Chino is annoyed too. You could argue Deftones first album was new metal, but they changed direction after that, meaning that they hated that scene.

I'm glad they recorded/released back to school even if it was forced. Still one of my favorite deftones songs.

I don't own any Korn albums, but I proudly owned all the albums by Deftones, FNM, Helmet etc.

My biggest musical inspirations are deftones, joy division, linkin park, System of a Down. But only chino Moreno and Ian Curtis are my biggest vocal inspiration.

Deftones always ruled

Ive always thought its strange to lump Deftones with KoRn and LB. The only thing they really have in common is gaining popularity during a similar point it time. But out of the 3, I still listen to Deftones all the time and still play their music on guitar.

Change by deftones listened to that when I was high asf and I was like holy shit who is this I was just listening to music in the radio got hooked on them

Deftones were sorta nu-metal with their first three records but they grew out of it to me. Their later albums have a nice organic sound

Faith No More....Angeldust.... just wow. One of the best rock albums of all time. So far out ahead of the curve. Deftones shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Bizkit. Hell not in the same month as them. Wes was a pretty good player but Deftones are so far above that.

Chino, you guys were definitely your own thing and most certainly stood out to many people as the best thing around at the time. You guys are one of my all time favorites and always will be.

I remember when I first discovered Deftones 7-8 years ago - an entire world opened up for me. I can't possibly imagine what it would have been like to experience the Deftones from the start.

Never once thought of the Deftones as nu-metal. The Deftones are their own genre.

Just about every single band to come out of that genre was massively influenced by Faith No More. Back in 2003 Kerrang listed Faith No More's Angel Dust as the most influential album of all time. I wouldn't go that far but it's probably the most influential rock album probably in the last 25 years. Everything from the music to Mike Patton's general stage presence was being used by tons of bands. It's crazy how many personal accounts I've heard from different bands talking about Faith No More and Mike Patton.

CHINO is incredible vocalist ,Deftones have unique music style , and also Chino got unique swag , I like his clothing style

I was always curious when this interview was going to pop up. My twin brother and I were in line (up from Buffalo, NY) for that evening's show (AIC/Deftones/Mastodon), and watched you guys do your thing. Great interview, Banger TV. Deftones in 2020 really is their own genre & have always been. Korn is also another band that have a unique genre. Both still crushing it

I have viewed and read interview after interview through the years. ... and one band comes up 95% of the time as a major influence on bands from 90s thru early 2000's. FAITH NO MORE!

Deftones are timeless

Deftones have made a series of good choices that have kept them in the game. They are still relevant to this day and every album is an evolved version of the last one. Ive been a deftones fan for the past 20 years and im proud of it.

Seen chino in various bands 8 times now. Crosses being the latest and best because of the small venue and proximity to the action. Love the Deftones as it's music forever changed my life. Btw Mike Patton is the best vocalist ever🤘

Just his soft melodic vocals are different from all metal/nu metal, let alone the way they experiment with music. Maybe it should be called experimental metal or art metal. Be blessed Mexican brother, Camilo Chino Moreno.

Deftones - 7 Words is what real nu metal sounded like

One of the most consistent metal bands around. Honing their sound, never jumping on trends and bandwagons. Even their worst album Gore would be considered other people’s Magnum opus. Why they’re still not on metal-archives baffles me.

I love that Chino and I are the same age and loved these bands at the same time. When he talks about listening to Morrissey all through high school and I’m like we are the same person 😂

I don't care what people call them or label them as. I grew up listening to Deftones.....and Deftones are in their own category. It's called ORIGINALITY. They didn't copy or try to be something they aren't. Love this band and always will!!

I just found a concert from them from 1992 I had never seen the other day. These guys were on top something special from the start. Been a fan since 95. I call musicians like these guys "puzzle piece players". Meaning that each of them make up a very definitive piece, but only until they come together do you see the whole picture and its greater than the sum of their parts. Abes drumming is so distinct with chis grooves, with chinos haunting voice, and stephens incredibly unique guitar playing that is straightforward but unlike anyone else.

Deftones is nu metal band definitely not hating by a lot metalhead. They really creative in their music.

DEFTONES!

I'm the snobbiest of music snobs and always have been. At age 34 I'm finally learning to stop being a jerk about it, but with music being one of my only interests since I was a little kid, I like to believe I have cred. “7 Words” and “Bored” came out when I was in 7th grade and they tickled my fancy like nothing I had heard before. Meanwhile, my big brother had the first Korn album and even though I thought I should like it, I couldn't stand to listen to it. A short time later I stumbled upon Sepultura's "Roots", it blew my young mind and over the next few years I got really into underground 80's and 90's metal; while continuing my obsession with new wave/post punk and 60s/70s rock. That was about the time Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach and Linkin Park became big and all my friends were crazy about them, but I wouldn’t shut up about how awful I thought they were, and how it sounded like some kids pissed off because mom burnt their toast. I've never thought Deftones belonged in the nu-metal category, and being aware of how terrible and gimmicky the movement was, its kind of an insult to include them. It always seemed that Deftones made authentic music, that just so happened to be heavy because it was appropriate and it fit, while the other bands sounded like they were trying to peddle cheesy, forced material via heavy delivery in a shock value approach. I know that's just my opinion and I know some very respectable people who appreciate some of the nu-metal bands. Anyhow, that's story time, Tang and Rice Krispie squares on the back table.

Saw them 8 times. Love this band they are the real deal even through it all with chi. Hardest working band out there!!

my respects for a band leader like him, a band which didn't sell its ass to the mainstream like the thing Mtv intended.Why call them New Metal if they were hitting the scene a long time before all those new trendy new metal bands? in any case of those bands were imitating Deftones, Rage Against The Machine etc, and now you can see that New Metal thing I guess desappeared, or better said those bands abbandoned new metal like Linking Park or Limp Biskit. Time demostrated which bands are authentic and which one aren't, look which ones are still rocking nowadays

Interesting. I always thought "Back to School" didn't really fit in with the rest of the album...by no means a bad song though.

I wonder if the song, "My Own Summer" dealt with any of the Deftones turning down the spring break event? Maybe the title of the song deals with that and not any of the lyrics?
